Philips Hue Installation in London: Lights, Switches, Outdoor and Secure
Updated
Philips Hue does not run a home installation service in the UK, so fitting is left to the owner or a pro they choose. Vetted pros in the Jack All Trades (JACK) London network fit Hue for a fixed price, checking the wiring behind the switch, the ceiling above the light and the Bridge's reach before anything goes up.
In short
Yes: Philips Hue does not run a UK home installation service, so Jack All Trades (JACK) books vetted pros in London to fit and set up the Hue lights, switches, outdoor lights and Secure cameras you have bought. Bulbs, the Bridge and plug-in lights need no wiring, while ceiling lights, wall switch modules and mains outdoor lights go onto your existing circuits, which in England is not notifiable under Part P away from a bath or shower. You buy the Hue products, any accessory the job needs is agreed at cost, and a pro sets a fixed price in the JACK app before you book.
Tell JACK which Hue products you have and send photos of where each one goes. The pro prices the job from those photos, fits and connects each item, and stays until everything works from the wall switch, the app and your voice assistant. Updates on the job, and your messages with the pro, stay in the JACK app.
Below are the Hue jobs JACK pros take on, a guide to the models that come up most, and plain answers to the questions that decide the work: neutral wires, dimmers, fire-rated ceilings, bathrooms and outdoor power.

What do JACK pros fit across the Philips Hue range?
Hue products sold in the UK that need fixing, wiring or setting up, and older Hue kit already in your home:
- Bridge and set-up: the Hue Bridge or Bridge Pro, bulbs, plug-in lamps, rooms, scenes and voice control
- Ceiling and pendant lights: Datura, Infuse, Enrave, Tento, Aurelle, Surimu, Centris, Ensis and the other UK families, plus Perifo track on its ceiling power supply

- Switches and modules: Hue's battery wall switch module, its newer wired modules (most of which need a neutral), and remotes such as the Tap Dial
- Outdoor wall lights and floodlights: Hue's mains range, such as Econic, Impress and the newer 2026 wall lights, fitted where an outside light already is
- Garden lighting: Lily, Calla and the rest of Hue's low-volt range on Hue's outdoor power supply, and Festavia permanent lights along eaves and rooflines
- Lightstrips and TV sync: Flux, OmniGlow and Solo strips, Play light bars, the Play gradient lightstrip and the Play HDMI Sync Boxes

Does Philips Hue offer installation in the UK?
Not for homes. When we checked Hue's UK website on 1 November 2026 it had no installation service page, and the matching US page no longer loads either. What Hue does publish is guidance for whoever does the fitting:
- Its UK support article on in-wall modules says electrical devices 'should only be installed and connected by electrically skilled people', and that local regulations may prohibit working on wires without a professional
- Hue's wall switch finder suggests asking a qualified electrician to check the wiring if you are unsure, and warns that the neutral may be black in older UK installations
- Signify's general safety leaflet for Hue light fittings says certain regulations require installation 'only by a licensed electrician (e.g. Part P for the UK ...)'. England has no electrician's licence: Part P decides which jobs must be notified to building control, not who may do them
- Hue's Danish site runs a programme for electricians buying through selected wholesalers; Hue's UK site has no equivalent
In practice, Hue in London homes is fitted by independent electricians and handymen. JACK books vetted local pros who do this work, and has no link to Signify or Philips.
What decides the cost of Philips Hue installation in LondonWhich Hue jobs can a JACK pro fit, and which go to a registered electrician?
In England the answer comes from regulation 12 of the Building Regulations and Approved Document P, not from the box. In plain terms:
- No wiring at all: Hue bulbs in existing lampholders, the Bridge, plug-in lamps, Play bars, indoor lightstrips on their plugs and battery remotes
- Not notifiable, and fitted by JACK pros who do electrical work: a Hue ceiling light, pendant or Perifo power supply in place of an existing light, a wall switch module behind an existing switch, and a mains outdoor light or the Secure Flood Light Camera where an outside light already is
- Also not notifiable: new Hue spotlights added to an existing lighting circuit, and a new outdoor socket spurred from an existing circuit for Hue's garden power supply
- Not notifiable, though still electrical installation work: Hue's low-volt garden lights fixed in beds and on walls
- Notifiable, and not booked through JACK: a new circuit from the consumer unit, a replacement consumer unit, and any addition or alteration in the space around a bath or shower (up to 2.25 m high, and 0.6 m out from the bath or tray, or 1.2 m from a shower head with no tray)
- In a residential block of 18 m or seven storeys and up, notifiable work also needs the Building Safety Regulator's approval before it starts, unless it is done under a competent person scheme
Non-notifiable work still has to meet the wiring regulations, BS 7671, and be tested, so ask your pro for a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate for any circuit they alter. Jobs that are notifiable go to an electrician registered with a competent person scheme, which JACK does not book.
Electrician or handyman: who can fit each Hue productWhat does an older London home change about a Hue job?
About half of London's homes are flats, and many lighting circuits are older than today's rules. The details that matter for Hue sit behind switches and above ceilings:
- Ceiling roses wired loop-in, so the rose usually has a neutral while the switch box below does not: the reason Hue's battery wall switch module suits so many British switches
- Lighting circuits from before about 1966 that may have no earth: a Class I fitting needs one run first, while double-insulated Hue fittings such as the Datura need none
- A ceiling with another flat above: it is a fire-separating compartment floor, and JACK's own rule is that pros cut no new downlight holes in it
- Solid brick walls and long terraces that stretch Hue's Zigbee mesh, so a garden light may need another mains Hue light between it and the Bridge
- Dimmer switches left from halogen days: Hue says older dimmers made for incandescent bulbs can make LEDs flicker, and Signify's leaflet says Hue fittings must not be connected to an additional dimmer
- Conservation areas and listed buildings, where a light or camera on the front can need the council's consent first
Why do Hue lights go 'unreachable', and how does the pro stop it?
A Hue light needs power all the time to stay on the network, so the wall switch is the usual reason a Hue room stops answering. The pro settles it with you:
- Leave the switch on and fix a battery remote such as the Dimmer Switch or Tap Dial beside it: no wiring, but anyone can still turn the switch off
- Fit Hue's battery wall switch module behind the existing switch, so the switch sends a wireless command and the light keeps its power
- Where a neutral is available, fit a wired module behind the switch or in the ceiling above the light
- Replace an old dimmer with a plain or push switch and a module, since old dimmers can make LED bulbs flicker and Hue's battery module does not work with dimmers
- Set each light's power-on behaviour on the Bridge, so after a power cut it comes back the way you choose: Hue's default, its last setting or a custom colour
After a switch module goes in, the light is live even when it is off, so the pro labels the switch and shows you which breaker isolates it before anyone changes a bulb.
Why does my Hue light say unreachable?Hue in a flat or a rented home: what needs agreement first?
A Hue job inside your own flat is usually your call, but some parts of it belong to the building or the landlord:
- Outside walls, communal hallways and the street door usually belong to the freeholder, so an outdoor Hue light, a Secure camera or a doorbell on a shared wall needs the managing agent's written agreement
- Flat entrance doors onto a shared corridor are normally fire doors, and nothing is drilled through one without the agreement of the building's Responsible Person
- Many leases restrict cutting into ceilings, and the ceiling to the flat above is a fire-separating floor in any case
- In a rented home, a new ceiling light or switch module changes the landlord's wiring, so get written consent and keep the old fittings
- A Hue Secure camera that sees past your boundary brings in data protection law, GOV.UK's domestic CCTV guidance says, so the view is set with you

JACK's rules on bathrooms and on ceilings under another flat are its own and go further than the law requires.
What to send in the JACK app for each Hue job
The pro prices from your photos, so these are the ones that get the fixed price right first time:
| Hue job | Photos to send | Also say |
|---|---|---|
| Bridge and bulbs | Your router and where it sits, and the bulb in each fitting | Which Hue products you have, and whether you use Apple Home, Google Home or Alexa |
| Ceiling or pendant light | The existing light, the ceiling around it and the switch | The Hue model and its weight from the box, and the ceiling height |
| Downlights | The ceiling, and a close-up of one downlight with any marking on its rim | House or flat, and what is above the room |
| Switch modules | Each switch for the light, from the front | Whether any is a dimmer, and how many places switch the same light |
| Outdoor wall light or floodlight camera | The outside light, the switch indoors and the consumer unit | The light's height, and whether a ladder can stand below it |
| Garden lighting | Each spot, the nearest outdoor socket and the route between them | Which power supply you have, and whether the route crosses lawn, beds or paving |
| Secure doorbell | The door, the bell transformer's label and the chime | Whether it is a flat front door onto common parts |
Every Philips Hue product guide
One guide per model: how it is powered and fixed, what the installation involves, what the pro checks and what to send before you book.
| Product | Type | What the guide covers |
|---|---|---|
| Bridge Pro | Bridge and set-up | Hue's top hub, listed for 150 lights and 50 accessories: placed and cabled to the router, an older Bridge migrated across, and everything the move drops put back. |
| Datura Ceiling Light | Ceiling and pendant lights | Hue's up-and-down ceiling light with built-in LEDs: the 30 × 120 cm size weighs 8.6 kg, so most of the job is fixing it to the ceiling securely. |
| Perifo Track Lighting | Ceiling and pendant lights | Hue's track system: rails fixed to the ceiling, fed by a Perifo ceiling power supply that wires into an existing light point and runs up to 100 W of lights. |
| GU10 Smart Spotlight | Downlights and spotlights | Hue's mains GU10 lamp, 57.8 mm long, swapped into the downlights already in your ceiling: no cutting or rewiring, which makes it JACK's way to put Hue into a flat's ceiling. |
| MR16 Smart Spotlight | Downlights and spotlights | Hue's 12 V spotlight on a GU5.3 two-pin base: the lamp swap is simple, and the real job is checking each transformer in the ceiling against Signify's tested list. |
| Wall Switch Module | Switches and modules | Hue's battery module (CR2450) for the back box behind your existing switch: no neutral needed, so it suits most UK switch boxes, and your Hue lights stay reachable. |
| Wired Wall Switch Module | Switches and modules | Hue's mains-powered module for smart lights, added in 2026: it needs a neutral, so in many UK homes it goes at the ceiling rose rather than behind the switch. |
| Wired Modules for Non-Smart Lights | Switches and modules | Hue's in-wall on/off switch (1- or 2-channel) and dimmer for ordinary lights: your fittings stay, and the module behind the switch makes them work with Hue. |
| Lily Outdoor Spotlights | Garden lighting | Hue's low-voltage garden spotlights, Lily at 8 W and Lily XL at 15 W, run from a 40 W or 100 W outdoor power supply that plugs into an outdoor socket. |
| Festavia Permanent Outdoor Lights | Garden lighting | Hue's year-round string of light pods for eaves, rooflines and façades: the UK 18 m set has 32 pods and its own low-volt power supply, and a 9 m pack extends it. |
| Play HDMI Sync Box | Lightstrips and TV sync | Hue's HDMI box that reads the picture from your sources and drives Hue lights in time with it; the 8K model has four HDMI 2.1 inputs and one output. |
| Play Gradient Lightstrip | Lightstrips and TV sync | The colour-zoned strip for the back of a TV: Hue's 2026 standard and Pro versions can be cut and are made for screens up to 100 inches. |
| Secure Floodlight Camera | Secure cameras and doorbell | Hue's mains floodlight with a 1080p camera built in: 2,250 lumens, listed as Class I so it needs an earth, and run through a Hue Bridge. |
| Secure Wired Video Doorbell | Secure cameras and doorbell | Hue's only UK doorbell is wired with no battery: it needs a 12–24 V AC transformer of at least 10 VA, and Hue's Smart Chime takes over from your old chime. |
How is Philips Hue installation priced in London?
A vetted pro prices your Hue job from the products and your photos, and the JACK app shows that fixed price before you book.
Whether the job touches your wiring matters more than how many lights there are. Fitting B22 or GU10 bulbs, setting up a Bridge and plugging in lamps, Play bars or a lightstrip is set-up work. Ceiling lights, Perifo track, wall switch modules and mains outdoor lights are electrical work on your existing circuits, priced for the isolating, connecting and testing each one needs.
Then the home itself: a heavy fitting that has to go into a joist, a high or sloping ceiling, a two-way landing that needs a module at both switches, old cable with no earth, or a long garden run for low-volt lights. On a high ceiling or a long fitting, your pro can ask another pro on JACK to help through the Pro2Pro feature. Several Hue jobs, and devices from other brands, go on one booking for one fixed price.
You buy the Hue products; JACK does not sell them. Accessories the job needs, such as a deeper back box, an in-use cover for an outdoor socket or aluminium channel for a strip, are agreed and added at cost before you book, and so is parking where it has to be paid for. Prefer to pay for time? As a guide, hourly hire is typically £45–£95 per hour for smart home work and £55–£110 per hour for electrical work, and a full-day handyman booking is a flat £350–£400 for up to 8 hours on site, which suits a whole-house Hue fit.
How it works
Step 1
List the products and add photos
Name the Hue products you have, or paste the order, and photograph where each goes: the existing light and ceiling, the switch that runs it, the outside wall for garden lights, and your router.
Step 2
Accept one fixed price, then book a day
A vetted pro prices the whole list from your photos, and any part the job needs is agreed at cost up front. Only once you accept that price do you book, picking a day that suits you, with evenings and weekends where pros offer them.
Step 3
Fitted, connected and handed over
Power isolated before any light or switch is touched, each item fixed, connected and tested, then added to your Bridge with rooms and scenes set up with you.

Frequently asked questions
Does Philips Hue offer installation in the UK?
Not for homes. Hue's UK website had no installation service page when we checked on 1 November 2026, and Hue's guidance leaves hardwired products to electrically skilled people. Independent pros fit Hue in UK homes, and JACK books vetted ones in London for a fixed price.
Do I need an electrician for Philips Hue?
For bulbs, the Bridge, plug-in lamps, lightstrips and battery remotes, no. Ceiling lights, wall switch modules, new spotlights and mains outdoor lights are electrical work on an existing circuit, which in England is not notifiable away from a bath or shower, so a competent pro who does electrical work can fit them. A new circuit or a new consumer unit is notifiable, and JACK's own rule adds any fixed work in a bathroom's zones: JACK books none of these, so they go to an electrician registered with a competent person scheme.
Can you install Hue I have already bought?
Yes. JACK does not sell Hue, so pros fit what you bought, from Hue's own store or any other shop, and Hue that came with your home. An accessory the job needs, such as a deeper back box or a transformer, is agreed at cost before you book.
Do I need a Hue Bridge?
For more than one room, almost always. Without a Bridge, Hue's Bluetooth control stops at 10 lights and 10 accessories in one room, with no Matter, and most Hue outdoor lights and both wall switch modules for smart lights need one. Hue rates the Bridge for 50 lights and 12 accessories, and the Bridge Pro for 150+ lights and 50+ accessories.
Does Philips Hue work with Google Home, Alexa and Apple Home?
Yes. Through the Bridge, Hue says all its products work with Matter except the Play HDMI Sync Box and the dial on the Tap Dial switch, and the pro links your Hue account to Google Home, Alexa or Apple Home. Bulbs carrying the Matter logo can also join directly over Thread through a hub such as the Google Nest Hub (2nd Gen), but Hue says they must leave the Bridge first.
Can you fit Hue downlights in my flat?
Usually as Hue GU10 lamps in the fire-rated downlights you already have. The ceiling between two flats is a fire-separating floor, Hue's UK pages state no fire rating for its recessed spotlights, and JACK's own rule is that pros cut no new downlight holes in a ceiling with another flat above.
Can you fit Hue lights in a bathroom?
Yes, outside the zones around the bath or shower: a Hue bulb in an existing bathroom fitting that suits it, a battery remote by the door, or a Hue fitting on a ceiling point beyond the zones once the pro has measured them and checked the circuit has 30 mA RCD protection. JACK does not book fixed electrical work inside the zones, so a new or replacement light there goes to a registered electrician. The bathroom guide explains the zones and Hue's IP44 spotlights.
How much does Philips Hue installation cost in London?
It is a fixed price for your job, set by a vetted pro from the products and your photos and shown in the JACK app before you book. Wiring, ceiling height, two-way switching and the number of items move it most, and the Hue products are never part of the price because you buy them. As a guide, smart home work by the hour is typically £45–£95 per hour.
Do JACK pros install Google Nest and Aqara too?
Yes. Google Nest and Aqara devices have their own London guides and are booked the same way, and a Hue job and a Nest or Aqara job can share one booking.
Do you install Philips Hue outside London?
No. JACK's pros work at London addresses only, though the Hue guides here on UK wiring, Part P and ceilings apply anywhere in England.
Is Jack All Trades part of Philips Hue or Signify?
No. Jack All Trades (JACK) is an independent London service with no link to Signify, which makes Philips Hue, or to Philips, and neither has endorsed it. Hue product names appear here only so you can find the product you own.
