Philips Hue Ceiling and Pendant Light Installation in London

Updated

A Hue ceiling light goes up much like any other, with two differences: the switch below has to keep it powered, and some Hue fittings are heavy or long enough to need more than the old rose's screws. A vetted JACK pro in London checks the wiring, the earth and the ceiling first, fits the Hue light you bought and adds it to your Bridge.

In short

Yes: a vetted JACK pro in London who does electrical work fits Philips Hue ceiling lights, pendants and the Perifo ceiling power supply where an existing light is, which in England is a replacement on the same circuit and not notifiable under Part P. Hue lists the Datura and the Perifo ceiling power supply as 220–240 V and double insulated (Class II), so neither needs an earth, but at 8.6 kg the 30 x 120 cm Datura is fixed into the joists or a timber noggin, not the plasterboard alone. A fixed price for the fitting appears in the JACK app before you book.

Send the Hue model from the box or order, a photo of the existing light and the ceiling around it, the switch that runs it, and the ceiling height. Still choosing? Send the room first and ask in the app which Hue families suit the ceiling.

Each guide covers how the model is powered and mounted, what the pro does and what to send before booking.

Which Hue ceiling and pendant lights do JACK pros fit?

Hue's UK store lists these families, most in several sizes and in white or colour versions:

  • Ceiling lights: Datura, Infuse, Enrave, Being, Fair, Still, Devere and the Xamento ceiling lamp
  • Flat panels: Tento round and square panels, Aurelle and Surimu, and the Devote, which Hue sells as the Hue Slim ceiling light: a surface fitting, not a downlight
  • Spot fittings: Centris ceiling lights with two, three or four spots
  • Pendants: the Signe gradient pendant and pendulum, the Enrave, Ensis and Flourish pendants, and the Amaze and Fair suspensions
  • Perifo: Hue's track system, with lights on rails fed from a ceiling or wall power supply

Love a pendant that is not Hue? A Hue B22 bulb in its lampholder makes it smart with no wiring at all, and JACK's pendant fitting service covers hanging the fitting itself.

What is checked at the ceiling before the old light is removed?

These decide whether the Hue light goes straight up or needs more work first:

  • The earth: lighting circuits wired before about 1966 often have none, and a Class I fitting with earthed metal parts cannot go on them until an earth is run to the point
  • The rose: British loop-in roses usually carry a permanent live and a neutral as well as the switched live, which is where a wired switch module can sit if the switch box lacks a neutral
  • The ceiling: lath and plaster, plasterboard or concrete, and where the joists run, since Signify's safety leaflet asks for fixings chosen for the fitting's weight and the ceiling material
  • RCD protection: if the lighting circuit has none, you are told on the day, because adding it means work at the consumer unit that is not part of a light swap
  • The switch: a dimmer on the circuit has to go, because the Signify leaflet says Hue fittings must not be connected to an additional dimmer

How is a heavy fitting like the Datura fixed?

Hue's UK page gives the 30 x 120 cm Datura a net weight of 8.6 kg and a length of almost 1.2 m, with its LEDs built in rather than a bulb, so fixing it is most of the job:

  • Screws go into the joists, or into a timber noggin fixed between them, never into plasterboard alone
  • A long fitting shows any skew, so it is lined up with the walls before the first hole is drilled
  • With the LEDs built in there is no bulb to change later; the whole fitting joins your Bridge over Zigbee, or a phone over Bluetooth
  • On a high ceiling or over a stairwell, your pro can ask another pro on JACK to help through the Pro2Pro feature

How does Perifo track connect to your ceiling?

Perifo is a rail system rather than one light, and Hue sells two ways to power it:

  • Ceiling power supply: Hue says it wires into your home's electricity, takes 220–240 V, is Class II and powers up to 100 W of Perifo lights, with an electrical box cover in the box
  • The 1-point unit feeds the end of one rail, and the 2-point unit feeds two rails from the same ceiling point
  • Wall power supply: a plug-in adapter, so no fixed wiring is touched and only the rail is fixed
  • Before fixing, the pro adds up the wattage of every Perifo light on the run so it stays within the 100 W each ceiling power supply allows

How is Philips Hue installation priced in London?

A vetted pro prices your Hue job from the products and your photos, and the JACK app shows that fixed price before you book.

Whether the job touches your wiring matters more than how many lights there are. Fitting B22 or GU10 bulbs, setting up a Bridge and plugging in lamps, Play bars or a lightstrip is set-up work. Ceiling lights, Perifo track, wall switch modules and mains outdoor lights are electrical work on your existing circuits, priced for the isolating, connecting and testing each one needs.

Then the home itself: a heavy fitting that has to go into a joist, a high or sloping ceiling, a two-way landing that needs a module at both switches, old cable with no earth, or a long garden run for low-volt lights. On a high ceiling or a long fitting, your pro can ask another pro on JACK to help through the Pro2Pro feature. Several Hue jobs, and devices from other brands, go on one booking for one fixed price.

You buy the Hue products; JACK does not sell them. Accessories the job needs, such as a deeper back box, an in-use cover for an outdoor socket or aluminium channel for a strip, are agreed and added at cost before you book, and so is parking where it has to be paid for. Prefer to pay for time? As a guide, hourly hire is typically £45–£95 per hour for smart home work and £55–£110 per hour for electrical work, and a full-day handyman booking is a flat £350–£400 for up to 8 hours on site, which suits a whole-house Hue fit.

How it works

Step 1

List the products and add photos

Name the Hue products you have, or paste the order, and photograph where each goes: the existing light and ceiling, the switch that runs it, the outside wall for garden lights, and your router.

Step 2

Accept one fixed price, then book a day

A vetted pro prices the whole list from your photos, and any part the job needs is agreed at cost up front. Only once you accept that price do you book, picking a day that suits you, with evenings and weekends where pros offer them.

Step 3

Fitted, connected and handed over

Power isolated before any light or switch is touched, each item fixed, connected and tested, then added to your Bridge with rooms and scenes set up with you.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an electrician to fit a Hue ceiling light?

You need someone competent at electrical work, but in England the job is not notifiable when the Hue light replaces an existing one on the same circuit, so it does not need a registered electrician. A vetted JACK pro who does electrical work fits it and tests it; ask your pro for a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate for the circuit.

Can a Hue ceiling light go on a circuit with no earth?

A double-insulated (Class II) one can: Hue lists the Datura and the Perifo ceiling power supply as Class II. A Class I fitting needs an earth at the point, so on an older circuit without one the pro either runs an earth or suggests a Class II alternative before you buy.

Can you add a new ceiling light point for a Hue light?

Yes, on an existing lighting circuit and away from a bathroom: GOV.UK lists extra lighting points on an existing circuit as work that does not need building regulations notification. In a flat, check the lease and what is above the ceiling first.

Can you fit a Hue ceiling light in my bathroom?

Only outside the zones around the bath or shower, once the pro has measured them and checked the circuit has 30 mA RCD protection. JACK does not book fixed electrical work inside the zones (up to 2.25 m high and 0.6 m out from the bath or tray, or higher under a fixed shower head), so a light there goes to a registered electrician. A Hue bulb in an existing bathroom fitting that suits it is a lamp change, and that a JACK pro can do.

Will my old light switch still work with a Hue ceiling light?

Yes, once the right part is behind it. Cut the power at the switch and a Hue light drops off the network, so the pro fits Hue's battery wall switch module behind your switch, or a wired module where a neutral is, and the switch then works as everyone expects.

How much does it cost to fit a Hue ceiling light in London?

It is a fixed price for your fitting and ceiling, worked out from the model and your photos and shown in the JACK app before you book. A heavy or long fitting, a high ceiling or an earth to run all add time. If you would rather pay by the hour, hourly hire for electrical work is typically £55–£110 as a guide.
