Philips Hue Perifo Track Lighting Installation in London
Updated
Perifo is Philips Hue's track lighting, often run over a kitchen island or along a living-room ceiling. On a ceiling, the rails take their power from a Perifo ceiling power supply unit that Hue says 'wires into your home's electricity', normally at the point where a ceiling light is now. A vetted JACK pro in London fixes the rails, connects the supply to that point, checks your lights stay inside its 100 W budget and sets the system up in the Hue app, for a fixed price you see before you book.
In short
Yes. A vetted JACK pro in London can fit Philips Hue Perifo track on a ceiling, with the Perifo ceiling power supply wired to the existing light point, an alteration that is not notifiable under Part P in England. Each ceiling supply is 220–240 V and Class II and powers up to 100 W of Perifo lights, so the wattage of everything on its rails is added up before the job is priced.

How the Perifo Track Lighting is powered and mounted
A Perifo ceiling installation has two halves. The rails are fixed to the ceiling, which is careful fixing and measuring work, and the ceiling power supply is the only part wired to the mains. It connects to an existing ceiling point, comes with a cover for the electrical box behind it, and feeds either the end of one rail (the 1-point unit) or two rails at once (the 2-point unit). Hue rates the ceiling supply Class II and IP20, which makes Perifo an indoor, dry-room system.
The number that shapes the layout is 100 W. Each ceiling supply powers up to 100 W of lights, and Hue's page says to add up each light's wattage, so the pro totals the Perifo lights you have bought against that limit and tells you before booking if the design needs more than one supply. Hue also marks the supply 'Only for Perifo track lighting', so it cannot be borrowed to power anything else on the ceiling.
Where a ceiling feed is not practical, Hueblog describes a Perifo wall power supply that plugs into a socket through an external power supply, with no fixed wiring. On the ceiling route the work is an alteration to an existing lighting circuit, which a competent pro may carry out in England without notifying building control; ask your pro for a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate covering the new supply. Feeding the track from a brand-new circuit would be notifiable, needs a registered electrician, and is not something JACK books.
What the pro checks first
- Which Perifo parts you have: the ceiling supply, each rail and every light with its wattage
- Where the existing ceiling point sits against the line you want the track to follow
- What the ceiling is made of, and where the joists run along the track's route
- Whether the old light's rose also carries connections for other lights on the circuit
- Whether a dimmer controls that point, since Hue's general luminaire leaflet says not to connect an additional dimmer
What the pro does on the Perifo Track Lighting
- Wattage of every Perifo light added up against the 100 W limit of the ceiling supply before anything is fixed
- Track line set out on the ceiling and sighted from below for straightness before any drilling
- Rails fixed to suit the ceiling, into joists wherever the route crosses them
- Old light removed with the circuit isolated and proved dead, then the ceiling supply connected and closed with its box cover
- Perifo lights placed on the rails and the system added to the Hue app, with rooms and scenes set
- Wall switch left on or swapped for a Hue control you choose, so the track never drops out of the app
How the Perifo Track Lighting installation goes
- 1Your layout, the Perifo parts list and photos of the ceiling point reviewed before the visit
- 2Circuit switched off at the consumer unit and the existing light taken down
- 3Rail positions marked out from the ceiling point and the rails fixed
- 4Ceiling power supply connected to the existing cable and its cover fitted
- 5Lights placed on the rails, power restored and the work tested
- 6Track added in the Hue app and the switch arrangement confirmed with you
Before you book: what to send
- A sketch or photo of where you want the track, with rough lengths
- The order list for the ceiling supply, rails, connectors and lights
- Photos of the ceiling light the track will replace and of its switch
- Your ceiling height, and whether the run passes over a stairwell or another hard-to-reach spot
- For a flat, whether your lease asks for consent before alterations to the ceiling
Which Perifo power supply suits your room?
Hue sells two ceiling supplies, and Hueblog describes a plug-in wall supply. What each means for the job:
| Perifo supply | Power | What it feeds | Mains work |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ceiling 100 W, 1-point | 220–240 V, wired into an existing ceiling point; Class II, IP20 | The end of one rail | An alteration at the existing point; not notifiable |
| Ceiling 100 W, 2-point | Wired into an existing ceiling point | Two rails from one point | As for the 1-point unit |
| Wall power supply | Plugs in, through an external power supply (Hueblog) | Perifo rails with no ceiling feed | None; the cable runs to a socket |
Each ceiling supply powers up to 100 W of lights. JACK does not sell Perifo parts: you buy them, and the pro fits them.

Full pricing guide for Philips Hue installationFrequently asked questions
How many Perifo lights can one power supply run?
As many as fit inside 100 W. Hue's page for the ceiling supply says it powers up to 100 watts and to add up each light's wattage, so the count depends on which Perifo lights you choose. If your design goes over, the pro tells you before you book.
Can Perifo track be fitted without wiring?
Yes, if you use a Perifo wall power supply, which Hueblog describes as plugging into a socket through an external power supply, so no fixed connection is needed. Check that Hue's UK store lists the wall supply for your rails before you buy. The ceiling supplies are the hardwired route, connected at an existing ceiling point.
Does Perifo track need an electrician in London?
The ceiling supply connects to the mains, so it needs a pro who does electrical work, but in England connecting it at an existing light point is not notifiable under Part P and needs no registration, though you should ask your pro for a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate afterwards. Running the track from a new circuit at the fuse board is registered-electrician work that JACK leaves out.
How much does Philips Hue Perifo Track Lighting installation cost in London?
It is a fixed price for your Perifo Track Lighting, worked out by a vetted pro from the model, a photo of where it is going and what power is there now, and shown in the JACK app before you book. Other devices can go on the same booking for one price. If you would rather pay for time, hourly hire for electrical work is typically £55–£110 per hour as a guide.
