Philips Hue Bridge Pro Installation in London

Updated

The Bridge Pro is the hub at the top of the Philips Hue range, listed for 150 lights, 50 accessories and 500 scenes, against 50 lights and 12 accessories on the square Hue Bridge. Moving a Hue home onto it is a migration Hue says cannot be undone, and it leaves Apple Home to set up again and Alexa and Google to reconnect. A vetted JACK pro in London places and connects it, runs the move with you as the account admin and restores what the move drops, for a fixed price in the JACK app before you book.

In short

Yes. A vetted JACK pro in London sets up the Philips Hue Bridge Pro, which needs a mains socket for its plug-in adapter and a link to your router, ideally the Ethernet cable Hue puts in the box. If you already have a Hue Bridge, the pro migrates it with you as the Hue account's admin, because Hue lets only the admin start a move that cannot be undone, then re-arms Hue Secure and reconnects Apple Home, Alexa and Google.

How the Bridge Pro is powered and mounted

The Bridge Pro is a flat round disc that sits on a shelf or screws to a wall, run from a small plug-in adapter. It can reach the router over Wi-Fi, which the square Hue Bridge cannot, yet Hue still recommends the Ethernet cable it supplies, so its usual home is next to the router or a wired access point. Hue gives no range figure. Each mains-powered Hue light repeats the Zigbee signal, so in a long London terrace, or a house with a basement kitchen and a loft bedroom, the pro sets the hub near the middle and relies on lights in between to carry it to the far rooms and the garden.

Most people who buy one already run a Hue home, and Hue's upgrade moves that set-up across from the existing Bridge in one direction only. It needs the Hue account's admin, the same account and Home, current software on every light and Bridge, the app open on an unlocked phone and an internet connection, because the move runs through Hue's migration service in Europe. Several older Bridges can now merge into one Bridge Pro, though on each extra Bridge the automations, accessory behaviours and Secure settings are rebuilt by hand.

What a migration leaves behind is where a pro earns the visit. Hue lists Living Colors and Living Whites, its older SmartLink and LightLink products, as unsupported, so they do not move. Hue Secure is disarmed during the move and stays that way until someone arms it again; Apple Home has to be set up afresh; Alexa, Google Home and SmartThings need rediscovering or relinking; and a Play HDMI Sync Box may need its Bridge changed in its own settings.

What the pro checks first

  • Where the router sits and whether a spare Ethernet port, or a wired access point, is close to the middle of the home
  • Who holds the admin role on the Hue account, since Hue lets no one else start a migration
  • How many Bridges you run and what each controls, including any Living Colors or Living Whites lamps that will not move
  • Which Hue Secure cameras, sensors or doorbell are armed, so each can be armed again once the move is done
  • Every app that drives the lights today: Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings or a Sync Box
  • That the phone running the Hue app is on Android 12 or later, or iOS 17 or later

What the pro does on the Bridge Pro

  • Bridge Pro cabled to the router by Ethernet, or left on Wi-Fi only where you agree a cable cannot reach
  • Old Bridge, lights, accessories and the Hue app brought up to date before the migration starts, as Hue requires
  • Screenshots taken of automations and Secure settings on any extra Bridge, so they can be rebuilt after a merge
  • Rooms, zones and scenes checked against the old set-up, and any non-Hue Zigbee device reset and re-added
  • Hue Secure armed again, Apple Home rebuilt and Alexa, Google Home or SmartThings relinked and tested by voice
  • The old Bridge factory reset once nothing is left on it, as Hue's upgrade guide advises
  • MotionAware set up if you want it, with the lights chosen and the room calibrated while it is empty

How the Bridge Pro installation goes

  1. 1Your photos of the router and a screenshot of the Hue app's Bridge list reviewed, so the plan is agreed before the visit
  2. 2Software updated on the old Bridge, every light and the phone's Hue app
  3. 3Bridge Pro plugged in, cabled to the router and found in the app
  4. 4Migration started from the admin's phone and left to finish with the app open and the screen awake
  5. 5Lights, scenes and accessories checked room by room, and anything that did not move added again
  6. 6Security re-armed, Apple Home and voice assistants reconnected and the old Bridge reset
  7. 7A walk round the home testing the furthest rooms, the garden lights and every switch

Before you book: what to send

  • A photo of the router and where it sits in the home, with any spare ports visible
  • A screenshot of the Hue app's Bridge settings showing how many Bridges, lights and accessories you have
  • The apps and voice assistants you use with Hue, and whether you have a Sync Box or Hue Secure devices
  • Who the admin is on your Hue account, and whether they can be at home or on the phone for the move
  • Whether the Bridge Pro is already bought: JACK does not sell Hue devices, so you buy it and the pro sets it up

What does MotionAware need from your lights?

MotionAware turns ordinary Hue lights into motion sensors by reading disturbances in their Zigbee signals, with no camera involved. Hue makes it exclusive to the Bridge Pro and sets these conditions:

  • Three or four compatible lights per motion area, and up to four areas on one Bridge Pro
  • Lights 1–7 m apart, at varying heights, not in a straight line and with no wall between them
  • All of them on the same Bridge, and indoors: Hue marks the feature 'Indoor Use Only'
  • A calibration scan with nobody in the room, pets included
  • Alerts covered by a Hue Secure plan where you have a camera, or by a separate MotionAware subscription with a 30-day trial

If your lights are all in one line along a corridor, or split by a wall, the pro tells you before calibration rather than after.

What carries over when a Hue Bridge moves to the Bridge Pro?

Hue's upgrade guide says what the migration moves and what it does not. This is the list the pro works through on the day.

Part of your set-upWhat Hue saysWhat the pro does
The set-up on your main BridgeMoved across by the migration, though non-Hue Zigbee devices must still be reset by their makers' instructions; third-party and first-generation lights 'cannot be optimized for performance in large systems beyond 50 lights'Checked room by room against your screenshots, with any non-Hue device reset and reconnected
Extra Bridges merged inAutomations, accessory behaviours and Secure settings rebuilt by hand; non-Hue Zigbee devices reset and re-addedRebuilt with you from the notes taken before the move
Living Colors and Living WhitesSmartLink and LightLink products are not supported and do not migrateNamed before the move, so nothing disappears by surprise
Hue SecureDisarmed during the migrationArmed again before the pro leaves
Apple HomeMust be set up againRe-added and tested from your iPhone
Alexa, Google Home and SmartThingsNeed rediscovering or relinkingRelinked, then tested by voice or in each app
Play HDMI Sync BoxMay need 'Change bridge' in its settingsPointed at the Bridge Pro and checked with the TV on

JACK's price for the visit is fixed before you book; Hue's own estimate for the migration itself is 30–60 minutes per Bridge.

Frequently asked questions

Can I go back to my old Hue Bridge after moving to the Bridge Pro?

No. Hue says the migration cannot be undone, so the old Bridge is factory reset afterwards rather than kept as a fallback. That is why the pro screenshots your automations, Secure settings and anything on extra Bridges before starting, and agrees with you what will need rebuilding.

Does the Hue Bridge Pro work over Wi-Fi?

Yes. It can join your router over Wi-Fi as well as Ethernet, whereas the square Hue Bridge has to be cabled. Hue still recommends Ethernet for the most reliable connection, so if your router lives in a hall cupboard far from the lights, the pro looks at a cable run or a wired access point first.

Can several Hue Bridges be merged into one Bridge Pro?

Yes. Hue's upgrade can now merge more than one Bridge into a single Bridge Pro. For each additional Bridge, Hue lists what has to be redone by hand: automations, accessory behaviours and Secure settings, plus a reset and re-add for any non-Hue Zigbee device.

Is MotionAware included with the Bridge Pro?

Yes, MotionAware is exclusive to the Bridge Pro, but its alerts need a plan. Hue covers them under a Hue Secure plan if you have a Hue camera; otherwise MotionAware has its own subscription after a 30-day trial. The pro sets up the areas and runs the calibration either way.

How much does Philips Hue Bridge Pro installation cost in London?

It is a fixed price for your Bridge Pro, worked out by a vetted pro from the model, a photo of where it is going and what power is there now, and shown in the JACK app before you book. Other devices can go on the same booking for one price. If you would rather pay for time, hourly hire for smart home is typically £45–£95 per hour as a guide.
