tado° Installation in London

Updated

tado° controls a boiler in one of two ways: a wired thermostat that takes the place of your wall thermostat, or a wireless kit whose mains receiver replaces your programmer, including on hot water cylinder systems. Smart Radiator Thermostats then add room-by-room control. A vetted local pro on Jack All Trades (JACK) fits and pairs it all on a day you choose, for a fixed price you see before you book.

In short

Yes. Jack All Trades (JACK) books vetted local pros in London to install tado° heating controls: the Wired and Wireless Smart Thermostat X, the UK Wireless Receiver X that takes the place of your old programmer, Smart Radiator Thermostats and the Bridge X, plus older V3+ kits. JACK pros work at the wall, on the controls wiring you already have. Connecting anything at the boiler itself needs a Gas Safe engineer. You see a fixed price in the JACK app before you book.

Send a photo of your boiler, your current thermostat or programmer and the tado° kit you bought. A pro prices the job from those photos, fits the new controls where the old ones are, checks that the boiler fires and switches off again, and sets up the rooms and schedule in the tado° app with you before leaving.

The guides below cover each tado° device, which kit suits which boiler, the difference between tado° X and V3+, and who is allowed to fit what.

What a tado° installation involves

tado°'s app builds a step-by-step installation plan for your system, and every box also carries a manual for professional installers. On a JACK booking the work breaks down like this:

  • Wired Smart Thermostat X: replaces your wired room thermostat on the same cable. Despite the name it runs on a battery; the wires only carry the on/off or OpenTherm signal to the boiler
  • Wireless Receiver X (UK): a mains-powered box that replaces a one- or two-channel programmer or an old receiver. tado° sets it up for a combi by default, and switches it to S-plan or Y-plan for a hot water cylinder
  • Old controls: tado°'s manual says the receiver must be the only device controlling the heating, so an old wired thermostat is bridged out at the wall and its spare wires insulated
  • Boiler test: heating, and hot water on a cylinder system, boosted from the device, then checked again after a few minutes to confirm the boiler fires and stops
  • Radiator thermostats: old thermostatic heads unscrewed and Smart Radiator Thermostats fitted, with an adapter from the box where the valve needs one
  • Handover: rooms, zones and the schedule set up in the tado° app with you, and the old controls left with you if you rent

Do you need a Gas Safe engineer to install tado°?

Not for the work at the wall. The Health and Safety Executive's code of practice on gas safety (L56) says the removal or replacement of electric thermostats and on/off timer switches is not covered by the gas safety rules where no gasway (the gas-carrying parts) is broken into. The line is the boiler itself:

  • JACK pros do: thermostats, sensors, Bridge X, radiator thermostats, and a receiver or wired thermostat that replaces an existing programmer, timer, receiver or room thermostat on the wiring already there, unless the old control plugs into or is wired inside the boiler
  • Needs a Gas Safe engineer: anything that means opening the boiler or connecting at its own terminals, including OpenTherm wired at the boiler. If your boiler has no external controls wired to it yet, that first connection is boiler work
  • Needs a heating engineer: tado° itself says a new system boiler with no controller, or connecting tado° straight to the wiring centre, is a job for a heating engineer
  • Needs an electrician: a new circuit from the fuse board, or electrical work around a bath or shower. Replacing controls on an existing circuit is not notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations in England, but it must still be done safely under Part P and should follow the wiring regulations (BS 7671)
  • Needs a G3-qualified installer: any change to the thermostat, cut-out or valve on an unvented (pressurised) hot water cylinder

Your photos show which case you are in. If part of the job needs a Gas Safe engineer or a heating engineer, the pro will say so rather than price it.

Who can install tado°: the full guide

What tado° offers itself, and where JACK fits

tado° designs its kits for DIY installation through the app, puts a manual for professional installers in every box, and its UK terms recommend having the devices professionally installed. As checked on 31 October 2026, tado°'s UK shop offers fitting by a third-party installer as an option on its wireless starter kits only, not on its wired or radiator thermostat kits. JACK is for the tado° jobs around it:

  • Any tado° kit bought without installation, from tado° or another shop, including the wired starter kit
  • Smart Radiator Thermostats fitted room by room, with the right adapter for each valve
  • A Bridge X placed and set up, or a second one for a bigger home
  • Older V3+ kits refitted, extended or moved, and V3+ systems taken out when you move to tado° X
  • A thermostat or sensor moved to a better room, or a receiver swapped in where an old one was
  • tado° controls on a vented hot water cylinder, swapped at the programmer

Before you book: what to send

A few photos and two answers let a pro price the job properly first time:

  • The boiler, plus the label showing its make and model (usually under the front or inside a flap)
  • Your current room thermostat, programmer or receiver, showing its make and model
  • The hot water cylinder and any label on it, if you have one: vented or unvented matters
  • One or two of your radiator valves, close up, if you bought radiator thermostats
  • The tado° kit you have, or your order: X or V3+, wired or wireless, and first or second generation
  • Where your Wi-Fi router is, and whether the boiler is in a cupboard, loft or basement

How tado° installation is priced

A vetted pro prices your job from photos of the boiler, your existing controls and the tado° kit, and the JACK app shows you that fixed price before you book.

What is on your wall now decides the job. A wired thermostat swapped for a Smart Thermostat X on the same cable is the simplest. A receiver in place of a heating and hot water programmer, an old wireless thermostat and its receiver to take out of the circuit, or a home split into zones takes longer. A Smart Radiator Thermostat is simple on its own, so a house full of them is priced on the number of radiators and the valves they sit on.

Every device goes on one booking for one price: the thermostat or receiver, a Bridge X if your kit needs one, and radiator thermostats for each room. Other jobs, such as a smart doorbell, can go on the same visit. Where parking has to be paid for, it is added at cost and agreed before you book.

Prefer to pay for the pro's time? Hourly hire works too: as a guide, smart home installation is typically £45–£95 per hour.

How it works

Step 1

Share your boiler and controls

Add photos of the boiler (including the label with its make and model), your current thermostat or programmer, your radiator valves if you bought radiator thermostats, and the tado° kit you have. Say whether you have a hot water cylinder.

Step 2

See the price, pick a slot

A vetted pro prices the job from what you sent and says if any part needs a Gas Safe engineer instead. Book once you are happy with the price; evenings and weekends are available when pros have them.

Step 3

Fitted, tested, handed over

Power isolated, old controls removed or bridged out at the wall, tado° devices fitted and tested, then rooms, zones and the schedule set up in the tado° app with you. You follow it all in the JACK app.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a Gas Safe engineer to install tado°?

Not for work at the wall. Swapping a wired thermostat for a Smart Thermostat X, or a programmer for the Wireless Receiver X, on the existing wiring is electrical work, and the HSE's gas safety code of practice says replacing electric thermostats and timer switches is not gas work where no gasway is broken into. Anything that means opening the boiler or wiring to its own terminals, including OpenTherm at the boiler, needs a Gas Safe engineer, and JACK pros do not do it.

Can I install tado° myself?

tado° designs its kits for DIY installation through the app, and radiator thermostats, sensors and the Bridge X need no wiring at all. The receiver runs on mains power, and tado°'s own UK terms recommend professional installation and put self-installation at your own risk. If you would rather not do the wiring, a JACK pro fits it and pairs everything for a fixed price.

Does tado° offer professional installation in London?

As checked on 31 October 2026, tado°'s UK shop offers fitting by a third-party installer as an option on its wireless starter kits only, not on its wired or radiator thermostat kits. tado° also runs a programme for professional installers but has no public directory of them. A JACK pro can fit any tado° kit, including radiator thermostats and V3+ devices.

Wired or wireless: which tado° kit do I need?

If you have a wired room thermostat and a combi boiler, the Wired Smart Thermostat X replaces it on the same cable. If you have a programmer, a wireless thermostat with its own receiver, or a hot water cylinder, you need the wireless kit, whose UK receiver replaces the programmer. tado° says the wired thermostat does not control hot water cylinders.

Does tado° work with my boiler?

tado° X works with boilers that take a relay (on/off) signal or OpenTherm, which tado° puts at 95% of heating systems. It has no eBus or EMS, so some Worcester Bosch, Vaillant and Glow-worm boilers get on/off control only, and a few Vaillant and Baxi set-ups are not supported by X at all. Electric heating is not compatible. Send a photo of the boiler label and the pro checks before pricing.

Do I need a Bridge X?

Not with the wireless kit: tado° says its Wireless Receiver X is itself a Thread border router. The wired thermostat and radiator thermostat starter kits include a Bridge X, which plugs into a socket and joins your Wi-Fi. tado° recommends one Bridge X per 100 square metres, and more on another floor if the signal is weak.

Can tado° X and V3+ work together?

No. tado° says X devices cannot share a Home with earlier tado° devices, and the V3+ Internet Bridge does not work with X. You can keep both lines on one account in separate Homes, but moving to X means setting up a new Home and re-entering your settings.

How much does tado° installation cost in London?

It is a fixed price for your job, worked out by a vetted pro from photos of the boiler, your existing controls and the tado° kit, and shown in the JACK app before you book. A receiver on a hot water system, an old thermostat to bridge out and the number of radiator thermostats all change the price. If you would rather pay for time, hourly hire for smart home installation is typically £45–£95 per hour as a guide.

Do you fit tado° Smart Radiator Thermostats?

Yes. Where your radiators already have thermostatic valves, the old head comes off and the tado° radiator thermostat screws on, directly on an M30 × 1.5 valve or with one of the adapters in the box. Radiators with manual valves need thermostatic valves first, which means draining the system, so that part is booked as plumbing.

I rent my flat. Can I have tado° fitted?

tado° markets its kits for owners and renters alike, and radiator thermostats come off without a trace. The receiver and wired thermostat replace fixed controls, so ask your landlord first and keep the old ones; a JACK pro can refit them when you move out.

Does the tado° app need a subscription?

No. tado° says the free app comes with every product. AI Assist (for tado° X) and Auto-Assist (for V3+) are optional paid add-ons for features such as automatic geofencing and longer heating history.

Which areas do you cover?

London only. Jack All Trades books vetted pros in London today. Outside London, the tado° guides here still explain what each installation involves, but we cannot send a pro to you yet.

Is Jack All Trades part of tado°?

No. Jack All Trades (JACK) is an independent London service and is not affiliated with or endorsed by tado GmbH. tado° product names are used only to describe the devices JACK pros install.
