tado° Smart Thermostat X Installation in London

Updated

tado° sells its Smart Thermostat X as a wired thermostat that takes the place of your wall thermostat, or as a wireless kit with a receiver that replaces your programmer. Which one suits you depends on what is on your wall today. A vetted JACK pro fits either, first or second generation, for a fixed price before you book.

In short

Yes. A vetted JACK pro in London fits the tado° Wired Smart Thermostat X in place of a wired room thermostat, and the wireless kit's receiver in place of a programmer or old receiver, on the existing wiring. tado° says the wired version does not control hot water cylinders, so cylinder homes need the wireless kit. Wiring at the boiler itself needs a Gas Safe engineer.

Send a photo of your current thermostat showing its make and model, your programmer if you have one, and the boiler label. That is enough to tell which kit you need and how long the swap takes.

Each guide covers how the model is powered and mounted, what the pro does and what to send before booking.

Wired or wireless: it depends on your current controls

tado° makes the choice simple once you know what the existing controls are. These are the cases a pro sees most in London homes:

  • A wired room thermostat on a combi boiler: the Wired Smart Thermostat X goes on the same cable, switching the boiler the way the old one did
  • A programmer or timer for heating and hot water: the wireless kit, whose UK receiver replaces the programmer and keeps hot water control
  • A wireless thermostat with its own receiver by the boiler: the wireless kit again, with tado°'s receiver taking the old receiver's place
  • Only the boiler's built-in clock and dial: tado° has to be connected at the boiler, which needs a Gas Safe engineer
  • A tado° V3+ system already: tado° X will not join it, so either extend it with V3+ devices or move everything to X as a new Home

What changes with the second generation

tado° launched the Smart Thermostat X (2nd gen) on 2 September 2026. The first generation is still sold, and the two work together in the same Home:

  • Power: the 2nd-gen wired thermostat and sensor have a battery you recharge over USB-C; the 1st gen took three AAA batteries
  • Controls: a light ring and a top button on the 2nd gen, three front buttons on the 1st
  • Relay: the 2nd gen has a normally open contact only, and any normally closed behaviour is set in the app
  • Wiring: the same terminals and the same job at the wall for both generations

How tado° installation is priced

A vetted pro prices your job from photos of the boiler, your existing controls and the tado° kit, and the JACK app shows you that fixed price before you book.

What is on your wall now decides the job. A wired thermostat swapped for a Smart Thermostat X on the same cable is the simplest. A receiver in place of a heating and hot water programmer, an old wireless thermostat and its receiver to take out of the circuit, or a home split into zones takes longer. A Smart Radiator Thermostat is simple on its own, so a house full of them is priced on the number of radiators and the valves they sit on.

Every device goes on one booking for one price: the thermostat or receiver, a Bridge X if your kit needs one, and radiator thermostats for each room. Other jobs, such as a smart doorbell, can go on the same visit. Where parking has to be paid for, it is added at cost and agreed before you book.

Prefer to pay for the pro's time? Hourly hire works too: as a guide, smart home installation is typically £45–£95 per hour.

How it works

Step 1

Share your boiler and controls

Add photos of the boiler (including the label with its make and model), your current thermostat or programmer, your radiator valves if you bought radiator thermostats, and the tado° kit you have. Say whether you have a hot water cylinder.

Step 2

See the price, pick a slot

A vetted pro prices the job from what you sent and says if any part needs a Gas Safe engineer instead. Book once you are happy with the price; evenings and weekends are available when pros have them.

Step 3

Fitted, tested, handed over

Power isolated, old controls removed or bridged out at the wall, tado° devices fitted and tested, then rooms, zones and the schedule set up in the tado° app with you. You follow it all in the JACK app.

Frequently asked questions

How much does tado° smart thermostat installation cost in London?

It is a fixed price for your job, worked out by a vetted pro from photos of the boiler, your existing controls and the tado° kit, and shown in the JACK app before you book. If you would rather pay for time, hourly hire for smart home installation is typically £45–£95 per hour as a guide.

Does the wired tado° thermostat need a power supply?

No. Both generations of the Wired Smart Thermostat X run on a battery: the 2nd gen recharges over USB-C and tado° says a charge lasts up to a year. The wires carry only the switching or OpenTherm signal to the boiler.

Can I swap my wired thermostat for the wireless kit instead?

Yes, where there is a programmer or receiver position on the existing wiring for the mains receiver. tado°'s manual says the receiver must be the only device controlling the heating, so the pro bridges the old thermostat's control wires at the wall and insulates the rest, then fits the Wireless Temperature Sensor X wherever suits the room. If the receiver would have to be wired at the boiler, as on many combis with only a wall thermostat, that part needs a Gas Safe engineer.
