What the radiator job involves
The heads screw on, but a whole-home job has more to it than that:
- Old heads unscrewed by their own nut only, never the valve fitting, as tado° warns; the radiator heats up while the valve is open, which is normal
- The right adapter for each valve: tado° X fits M30 × 1.5 valves directly, with six adapters in the box for Danfoss, M28, Caleffi and Giacomini valves
- Each head confirmed on the device so it runs its mounting routine on the valve, then added to its room in the app
- Rooms named, schedules set, and radiators grouped where one room has two
- Valves that leak, are seized or corroded flagged in photos rather than forced
Radiators that need work before a smart head
tado° lists the valves and systems its radiator thermostats do not suit:
- Manual (on/off) valves with no thermostatic head: they need swapping for thermostatic valve bodies, which means draining the system, so that is booked as plumbing
- Single-pipe (monotube) radiator systems
- Return-temperature (RTL) valves used on underfloor heating
- Valves with leaks, limescale or rust, and systems running at 85 °C or more
- Electric radiators: tado° heating products do not control them
How tado° installation is priced
A vetted pro prices your job from photos of the boiler, your existing controls and the tado° kit, and the JACK app shows you that fixed price before you book.
What is on your wall now decides the job. A wired thermostat swapped for a Smart Thermostat X on the same cable is the simplest. A receiver in place of a heating and hot water programmer, an old wireless thermostat and its receiver to take out of the circuit, or a home split into zones takes longer. A Smart Radiator Thermostat is simple on its own, so a house full of them is priced on the number of radiators and the valves they sit on.
Every device goes on one booking for one price: the thermostat or receiver, a Bridge X if your kit needs one, and radiator thermostats for each room. Other jobs, such as a smart doorbell, can go on the same visit. Where parking has to be paid for, it is added at cost and agreed before you book.

Power isolated, old controls removed or bridged out at the wall, tado° devices fitted and tested, then rooms, zones and the schedule set up in the tado° app with you. You follow it all in the JACK app.

Do tado° radiator thermostats work without a smart thermostat?
Yes, room by room, but they only open and close the radiator valve. Without a tado° thermostat or receiver switching the boiler, the heating still has to be on for them to do anything. With one, tado° can turn the boiler on when a room asks for heat.
Can you fit X heads in a V3+ home?
No. tado° says X and V3+ devices cannot share a Home. A V3+ system is extended with V3+ radiator thermostats; tado° X radiator thermostats need a Thread border router such as a Bridge X.
