tado° Radiator Valve Adapters: Will It Fit My Valves?

Updated

The commonest question with tado° radiator thermostats is whether they fit the valves already on the radiators. Most do, directly or with one of the adapters tado° puts in the box. This guide lists them, the valves that need a third-party adapter, and the ones that have to be replaced before any smart head goes on.

In short

The tado° Smart Radiator Thermostat X screws directly onto M30 × 1.5 valves. tado° includes six adapters: Danfoss RA, Danfoss RAV, Danfoss RAVL, M28 × 1.5, Caleffi and Giacomini. Vaillant 30.5 mm, Oventrop M30 × 1.0, Ista M32 × 1.0 and Orkli M28 × 1.0 valves need a third-party adapter. Manual valves, single-pipe systems and leaking or corroded valves are not suitable.

How to tell what valve you have

A close-up photo usually answers it. Look for:

  • A brand name on the old thermostatic head, or on the valve body under it
  • Notches around the base of a Danfoss valve, which tado°'s Danfoss RA adapter clips over
  • A plain round cap or a small handwheel and no numbers: that is a manual valve, not a thermostatic one
  • Any weeping water, green or white crust, or rust around the spindle, which rules the valve out until it is fixed

Fitting tips tado° gives

tado°'s help centre adds a few points a pro follows on every valve:

  • Undo only the old head's nut, never the valve fitting itself
  • Push the Danfoss RA adapter on until no metal of the valve body is visible
  • Fit a pin extender where tado°'s adapter guide calls for one, such as on M28, Danfoss RAV and Giacomini valves
  • Never use lubricant or thread-locker: tado°'s warranty terms exclude them

How tado° installation is priced

A vetted pro prices your job from photos of the boiler, your existing controls and the tado° kit, and the JACK app shows you that fixed price before you book.

What is on your wall now decides the job. A wired thermostat swapped for a Smart Thermostat X on the same cable is the simplest. A receiver in place of a heating and hot water programmer, an old wireless thermostat and its receiver to take out of the circuit, or a home split into zones takes longer. A Smart Radiator Thermostat is simple on its own, so a house full of them is priced on the number of radiators and the valves they sit on.

Every device goes on one booking for one price: the thermostat or receiver, a Bridge X if your kit needs one, and radiator thermostats for each room. Other jobs, such as a smart doorbell, can go on the same visit. Where parking has to be paid for, it is added at cost and agreed before you book.

Prefer to pay for the pro's time? Hourly hire works too: as a guide, smart home installation is typically £45–£95 per hour.

Frequently asked questions

Do the V3+ radiator thermostats use the same adapters?

Send a photo of the valve with your V3+ order and the pro checks. The list on this page is tado°'s list for the Smart Radiator Thermostat X.

Can you replace my manual valves at the same visit?

Replacing a valve body means draining the system and refilling it, so it is a plumbing job, booked separately. Once the thermostatic valves are in, the smart heads go on.
