tado° X or V3+: Which to Install, and Can You Mix Them?

Updated

tado° sells two product lines that look alike but do not talk to each other: tado° X, sold in the UK since November 2024, and the older V3+. The difference decides what you can add to an existing system and whether an upgrade keeps your boiler modulating. This guide compares them for London homes.

In short

tado° X and V3+ cannot share a Home: tado° says X devices are not compatible with earlier tado° devices, and the V3+ Internet Bridge does not work with X. X uses Thread and Matter, and connects to boilers by relay or OpenTherm only; V3+ wired thermostats also support digital buses such as Vaillant eBus and Worcester Bosch EMS. Extend V3+ with V3+, or move everything to X as a new Home.

When to stay with V3+

V3+ is still worth extending in some homes:

  • You already have a V3+ thermostat or wireless kit and want radiator heads in more rooms: V3+ add-ons join the same Home
  • Your V3+ wired thermostat talks to the boiler over a digital bus such as eBus or EMS: tado° says X may not be compatible with that boiler, or may only switch it on and off
  • You would rather not re-enter every room and schedule by hand, which a move to X requires

When to move to tado° X

X is the line tado° now leads with, and some homes gain from it:

  • Your system switches the boiler by relay, or uses OpenTherm, so nothing is lost
  • You want the UK receiver with OpenTherm, which the V3+ UK receiver lacks
  • You want tado° in Google Home, SmartThings or another Matter platform, which tado° X supports through Matter (V3+ already works with Apple HomeKit)
  • You are starting from scratch with no tado° devices yet

Moving means a new Home in the app. tado° says you can keep both lines on one account in separate Homes, but settings are not carried over.

How tado° installation is priced

A vetted pro prices your job from photos of the boiler, your existing controls and the tado° kit, and the JACK app shows you that fixed price before you book.

What is on your wall now decides the job. A wired thermostat swapped for a Smart Thermostat X on the same cable is the simplest. A receiver in place of a heating and hot water programmer, an old wireless thermostat and its receiver to take out of the circuit, or a home split into zones takes longer. A Smart Radiator Thermostat is simple on its own, so a house full of them is priced on the number of radiators and the valves they sit on.

Every device goes on one booking for one price: the thermostat or receiver, a Bridge X if your kit needs one, and radiator thermostats for each room. Other jobs, such as a smart doorbell, can go on the same visit. Where parking has to be paid for, it is added at cost and agreed before you book.

Prefer to pay for the pro's time? Hourly hire works too: as a guide, smart home installation is typically £45–£95 per hour.

Frequently asked questions

Can a JACK pro swap my V3+ system for tado° X?

Yes, at the wall: the V3+ thermostat or receiver comes off, the X device goes on the same wiring, and the X system is set up as a new Home. If your V3+ uses a digital boiler bus, X may only give on/off control, and moving to it means reconnecting the cable at the boiler's relay terminals, which needs a Gas Safe engineer and is not part of a JACK booking.

Is V3+ still supported?

tado° still runs a separate V3+ help centre, and its UK shop still listed V3+ wireless kits and radiator thermostats on 31 October 2026.
