tado° in London Flats and Rentals: What Works

Updated

tado° markets its kits as a retrofit for owners and renters alike, and London flats are where that gets tested: landlords' fixed controls, communal heating with no boiler of your own, and pressurised cylinders in a cupboard. This guide covers what works in a flat and what to check before you book.

In short

In a rented flat, Smart Radiator Thermostats come off without a trace, so they suit renters best. Swapping a thermostat or programmer for tado° changes fixed controls, so ask your landlord first and keep the originals. On communal heating with no wall thermostat, tado° points to radiator thermostats only. Any change to the controls on an unvented cylinder needs a G3-qualified installer.

Renting: what to ask and what to keep

A few steps keep a tado° install friendly to your tenancy:

  • Ask your landlord in writing before the thermostat or programmer is replaced
  • Keep the old thermostat, programmer and any receiver; a JACK pro can refit them when you move out
  • Radiator thermostats screw onto the valves and come off again, leaving the old heads to go back on
  • Bridge X plugs into a socket and joins your Wi-Fi, so it moves with you

Communal heating and pressurised cylinders

Many London blocks are heated differently from a house:

  • Communal or district heating with no wall thermostat: tado° says to use Smart Radiator Thermostats rather than a thermostat
  • A flat with its own boiler in a cupboard: the same jobs as a house, at the wall
  • An unvented (pressurised) cylinder: swapping the programmer is still wall work, but its thermostat, cut-out and valve are safety devices that need a G3-qualified installer
  • A boiler in a metal cupboard or a long flat: a Bridge X nearer the rooms keeps radiator thermostats online

How tado° installation is priced

A vetted pro prices your job from photos of the boiler, your existing controls and the tado° kit, and the JACK app shows you that fixed price before you book.

What is on your wall now decides the job. A wired thermostat swapped for a Smart Thermostat X on the same cable is the simplest. A receiver in place of a heating and hot water programmer, an old wireless thermostat and its receiver to take out of the circuit, or a home split into zones takes longer. A Smart Radiator Thermostat is simple on its own, so a house full of them is priced on the number of radiators and the valves they sit on.

Every device goes on one booking for one price: the thermostat or receiver, a Bridge X if your kit needs one, and radiator thermostats for each room. Other jobs, such as a smart doorbell, can go on the same visit. Where parking has to be paid for, it is added at cost and agreed before you book.

Prefer to pay for the pro's time? Hourly hire works too: as a guide, smart home installation is typically £45–£95 per hour.

Frequently asked questions

Can my landlord stop me fitting tado°?

Your tenancy decides that. Radiator thermostats come off without a trace, but replacing a thermostat or programmer changes fixed controls, so ask first and keep the originals.

Does tado° work without my own boiler?

Radiator thermostats do, room by room, on radiators with thermostatic valves. A tado° thermostat needs a boiler or heating system it can switch, which communal systems often do not give each flat.
