Which tado° Kit for My Boiler? Combi, System or Regular

Updated

tado° says its X range works with 95% of heating systems, but the right kit depends on two things: your boiler type and what controls you already have. This guide matches the common London set-ups to a tado° kit and says which part of each job a JACK pro does.

In short

Combi with a wired room thermostat: the Wired Smart Thermostat X. Any system with a programmer, a wireless thermostat or a hot water cylinder: the Wireless Smart Thermostat X kit, whose UK receiver replaces the programmer. tado° X connects by relay or OpenTherm only, so some eBus and EMS boilers get on/off control. Boilers with no external controls need a Gas Safe engineer for the first connection.

Boilers and heating tado° does not control

tado° lists these as not compatible, or as needing a different approach:

  • Electric radiators, infrared panels, immersion heaters and electric underfloor heating: tado° says it can only switch low currents, up to 3 amps
  • Communal or district heating with no wall thermostat in the flat: tado° points to Smart Radiator Thermostats rather than a thermostat
  • Heat pumps: tado°'s Heat Pump Optimizer X connects to the heat pump itself, so talk to your heat pump installer
  • Some Vaillant boilers with fit-in controllers (calorMATIC VRC 430 or 470, multiMATIC 700, sensoCOMFORT 720) and some Baxi models (EcoCondens, EuroCondens, Luna Platinum, NXR3i), which tado°'s UK guide marks as V3+ wired only

tado°'s UK compatibility guide is dated April 2024, before the second generation. tado°'s online compatibility check is the final word for your model; send the boiler label with your request and the pro checks too.

Your system, the tado° kit, and who does what

Match your boiler and current controls to a row. The last column says what a JACK pro does.

How tado° installation is priced

A vetted pro prices your job from photos of the boiler, your existing controls and the tado° kit, and the JACK app shows you that fixed price before you book.

What is on your wall now decides the job. A wired thermostat swapped for a Smart Thermostat X on the same cable is the simplest. A receiver in place of a heating and hot water programmer, an old wireless thermostat and its receiver to take out of the circuit, or a home split into zones takes longer. A Smart Radiator Thermostat is simple on its own, so a house full of them is priced on the number of radiators and the valves they sit on.

Every device goes on one booking for one price: the thermostat or receiver, a Bridge X if your kit needs one, and radiator thermostats for each room. Other jobs, such as a smart doorbell, can go on the same visit. Where parking has to be paid for, it is added at cost and agreed before you book.

Prefer to pay for the pro's time? Hourly hire works too: as a guide, smart home installation is typically £45–£95 per hour.

Frequently asked questions

Does tado° work with Worcester Bosch boilers?

tado°'s UK guide marks many Worcester Greenstar models as compatible by relay, with digital modulation only on the V3+ wired thermostat. With tado° X, most Worcester boilers are switched on and off rather than modulated.

Does tado° support OpenTherm?

Yes. The Wired Smart Thermostat X has OpenTherm terminals, and the UK Wireless Receiver X detects OpenTherm automatically. tado° says it is not compatible with system boilers that use a digital interface. If the OpenTherm terminals on your combi are not already wired to the wall, that connection at the boiler needs a Gas Safe engineer.
