tado° Wireless Smart Thermostat X (2nd gen) Installation in London

Updated

The tado° Wireless Smart Thermostat X (2nd gen) kit pairs a mains receiver, which tado° calls the Programmer X with Hot Water Control and OpenTherm, with a rechargeable room sensor. It is the tado° kit for homes with a programmer, a wireless thermostat or a hot water cylinder. A vetted JACK pro fits it in London for a fixed price before you book.

In short

Yes. A vetted JACK pro in London fits the tado° Wireless Smart Thermostat X (2nd gen) kit: the Programmer X receiver replaces your one- or two-channel programmer or old receiver on the existing wiring, set for a combi, S-plan or Y-plan, and the Wireless Temperature Sensor X (2nd gen) goes where it reads the room. Wiring the receiver at the boiler itself needs a Gas Safe engineer.

How the Wireless Smart Thermostat X (2nd gen) is powered and mounted

This kit splits the thermostat in two. The receiver sits where your programmer is, on mains power, and does the switching for heating and, on a cylinder system, hot water. The sensor is battery powered, so it can go on any inside wall or a stand in the room you want to measure.

Because the receiver is also the Thread border router, the kit connects to the app through it and needs no Bridge X. If the boiler and receiver are in a basement, tado° suggests adding a Bridge X closer to the rooms; a receiver at the far end of a long flat can need the same, so radiator thermostats keep their signal.

tado° says this is the kit for hot water cylinders: the wired thermostat cannot control them.

What the pro checks first

  • The programmer or receiver being replaced, and how each of its wires is connected
  • The boiler type and label: combi, system or regular, relay or OpenTherm
  • The hot water cylinder: vented or unvented
  • Any other wired thermostat still in the zone, which has to be bridged out
  • The fused spur that feeds the old programmer

What the pro does on the Wireless Smart Thermostat X (2nd gen)

  • Heating supply isolated and the old programmer or receiver removed
  • Receiver fixed to the wall, wired on the existing cables, earth to the earth terminal
  • Configuration changed to S-plan and Y-plan where there is a cylinder, or left on combi relay
  • Any old wired thermostat in the same zone bridged out at the wall, as tado° requires
  • Heating and hot water boosted, checked after three minutes, then the sensor placed and paired

Before you book: what to send

  • A photo of your programmer or receiver, showing its make and model
  • A photo of the hot water cylinder and any label on it, vented or unvented
  • The boiler's make and model
  • Whether there is also a wired thermostat on a wall somewhere

Bought the kit with tado°'s own fitting?

On 31 October 2026 tado°'s UK shop offered fitting by a third-party installer as an add-on on its UK wireless starter kits, but not on its wired or radiator thermostat kits. A JACK booking covers what that leaves, and is another way to get the kit itself fitted:

  • Kits bought without fitting, from tado° or another shop
  • Smart Radiator Thermostats added at the same visit or later
  • A second Bridge X for a large home, and the sensor moved to a better room

How tado° installation is priced

A vetted pro prices your job from photos of the boiler, your existing controls and the tado° kit, and the JACK app shows you that fixed price before you book.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the right tado° kit for a system boiler with a cylinder?

Yes, where the system already has a two-channel programmer: the receiver replaces it and is set to S-plan or Y-plan. tado° says a new system boiler with no controller at all, or a direct connection to the wiring centre, is a job for a heating engineer.

Can the kit run OpenTherm on my combi?

The receiver detects OpenTherm automatically when it is wired to the boiler's OpenTherm terminals. If those terminals are not already wired to where the receiver goes, making that connection at the boiler needs a Gas Safe engineer; otherwise the pro fits it in relay mode.

How much does tado° Wireless Smart Thermostat X (2nd gen) installation cost in London?

It is a fixed price for your Wireless Smart Thermostat X (2nd gen), worked out by a vetted pro from the model, a photo of where it is going and what power is there now, and shown in the JACK app before you book. Other devices can go on the same booking for one price. If you would rather pay for time, hourly hire for smart home is typically £45–£95 per hour as a guide.
