tado° Smart Thermostat X (1st gen) Installation in London
Updated
The first-generation tado° Smart Thermostat X arrived in the UK in November 2024, as a wired thermostat or a wireless kit with the UK receiver. It is still sold, refurbished units included, and it works alongside second-generation devices in the same Home. A vetted JACK pro fits either version in London for a fixed price before you book.
In short
Yes. A vetted JACK pro in London fits the tado° Smart Thermostat X (1st gen): the wired version (RU04) in place of a wired room thermostat, or the wireless kit's UK receiver (PR04) in place of a programmer, both on the existing wiring. It works in the same Home as 2nd-gen tado° X devices. Wiring at the boiler itself needs a Gas Safe engineer.

How the Smart Thermostat X (1st gen) is powered and mounted
tado°'s first X thermostats launched in May 2024 and reached the UK at the start of November 2024. If you bought a kit in that window and never fitted it, or fitted the wired version and now want radiator thermostats too, a pro can pick it up from there.
The first-generation wired thermostat ships with a battery strip that has to be pulled before it powers up, and it takes three AAA batteries rather than a rechargeable pack. Otherwise the job at the wall is the same as for the 2nd gen: the same terminals, the same relay or OpenTherm options, and the same rule that the boiler side stays untouched.
What the pro checks first
- Which kit you have: wired RU04, or the wireless kit with the PR04 receiver
- How the existing thermostat or programmer is wired
- Whether any tado° V3+ devices are already in the home, since X cannot join them
- The boiler label, against tado°'s compatibility check
What the pro does on the Smart Thermostat X (1st gen)
- Kit identified from the box or the device: wired RU04, or wireless with the PR04 receiver
- Old thermostat or programmer removed with the heating supply isolated
- Wired to the matching terminals on the existing cable, old controls bridged out at the wall
- Battery strip pulled, devices paired, and the boiler tested
- Newer 2nd-gen devices or radiator thermostats added to the same Home if you have them
Before you book: what to send
- A photo of the kit box, or the model code from the device
- A photo of your current thermostat or programmer
- The boiler's make and model
- Any tado° devices you already use, X or V3+
How tado° installation is priced
A vetted pro prices your job from photos of the boiler, your existing controls and the tado° kit, and the JACK app shows you that fixed price before you book.

Can I add a 2nd-gen tado° X thermostat to my 1st-gen system?
Yes. tado° says first- and second-generation X devices work together in the same Home, so a newer thermostat, sensor or radiator thermostat joins the existing system.
Is the 1st-gen wired thermostat worth fitting now the 2nd gen is out?
It does the same job at the wall with the same wiring. The main differences are the batteries (three AAA instead of a USB-C rechargeable pack) and the controls (three front buttons instead of a top button and light ring).
How much does tado° Smart Thermostat X (1st gen) installation cost in London?
It is a fixed price for your Smart Thermostat X (1st gen), worked out by a vetted pro from the model, a photo of where it is going and what power is there now, and shown in the JACK app before you book. Other devices can go on the same booking for one price. If you would rather pay for time, hourly hire for smart home is typically £45–£95 per hour as a guide.
