tado° Wireless Receiver X Installation in London
Updated
The tado° Wireless Receiver X UK is the mains box that does the switching in a tado° X wireless system. Sold on its own, it replaces an old receiver or programmer, or controls an extra zone. In the starter kit tado° calls the same device the Programmer X with Hot Water Control and OpenTherm. A vetted JACK pro fits it in London for a fixed price before you book.
In short
Yes. A vetted JACK pro in London fits the tado° Wireless Receiver X (UK) in place of a one- or two-channel programmer, a timer or an old wireless receiver, on the existing wiring, and sets it for a combi, S-plan, Y-plan or gravity-fed system. tado° says it cannot be wired straight to a system boiler, and any connection at a boiler's own terminals, including replacing an old receiver that plugs into or is wired inside the boiler, needs a Gas Safe engineer.

How the Wireless Receiver X is powered and mounted
This is the one tado° X heating device powered from the mains, so it is the part of a tado° job that needs care. tado°'s manual says to fix it to the wall before wiring, turn the power off first, check the boiler's manual, and use the strain reliefs in the box.
tado° also says the receiver must be the only device controlling the heating. Where an old wired thermostat sits in the same zone, the manual bridges its control wires and insulates the rest with the connector blocks supplied, which keeps the work at the wall rather than inside the boiler.
On a system or regular boiler, tado° connects through the existing programmer position and the wiring centre behind it, not straight to the boiler.
What the pro checks first
- The existing programmer's wiring, terminal by terminal, before anything is disconnected
- The fused spur supplying it, and an earth for the receiver's earth terminal
- Combi, S-plan, Y-plan or gravity-fed, so the receiver is set correctly
- The cylinder label: vented or unvented
- Signal from the boiler position to the rest of the home
What the pro does on the Wireless Receiver X
- Heating supply isolated and checked, and the old programmer or receiver taken off the wall
- Receiver fixed to the wall before any wiring, then wired on the existing cables with strain reliefs
- Configuration set with the Select System button: combi, S-plan and Y-plan, or gravity-fed
- Any old thermostat in the zone bridged out at the wall and spare wires insulated
- Heating and hot water boosted, and checked after three minutes as tado°'s manual says
Before you book: what to send
- A photo of the programmer or receiver it replaces, and of its wiring if the front comes off easily
- Your boiler type: combi, system or regular, and its make and model
- A photo of the hot water cylinder label, if you have one
- Whether this is an extra zone added to an existing tado° X system
How tado° installation is priced
A vetted pro prices your job from photos of the boiler, your existing controls and the tado° kit, and the JACK app shows you that fixed price before you book.
Full pricing guide for tado° installationFrequently asked questions
Can the tado° receiver go straight onto my boiler?
tado° says it can be connected directly to a combi boiler, but that means wiring at the boiler's own terminals, which needs a Gas Safe engineer and is not part of a JACK booking. tado° also says its receiver cannot be wired directly to a system boiler. Where there is an existing programmer, the pro fits the receiver in its place.
My receiver shows hot water but the boiler will not heat the cylinder. Why?
The usual cause is the configuration: the receiver ships set for a combi, and tado°'s manual says it has to be changed to S-plan and Y-plan before hot water control works. A pro can check the setting and the wiring at the receiver.
How much does tado° Wireless Receiver X installation cost in London?
It is a fixed price for your Wireless Receiver X, worked out by a vetted pro from the model, a photo of where it is going and what power is there now, and shown in the JACK app before you book. Other devices can go on the same booking for one price. If you would rather pay for time, hourly hire for smart home is typically £45–£95 per hour as a guide.
