tado° Wired Smart Thermostat X (2nd gen) Installation in London

Updated

The tado° Wired Smart Thermostat X (2nd gen) is the thin, rechargeable wall thermostat tado° launched in September 2026. It replaces a wired room thermostat and switches the boiler over the cable already in the wall. A vetted JACK pro swaps it in London, matches the wiring to the right terminals and tests the boiler, for a fixed price before you book.

In short

Yes. A vetted JACK pro in London fits the tado° Wired Smart Thermostat X (2nd gen) in place of your wired room thermostat, on the existing cable: switched live or volt-free relay at the wall, or OpenTherm where an OpenTherm cable already runs to the thermostat. tado° says it does not control hot water cylinders, so it suits combi boilers. Wiring at the boiler needs a Gas Safe engineer.

How the Wired Smart Thermostat X (2nd gen) is powered and mounted

The 2nd-gen wired thermostat runs on its own rechargeable battery, so the cable in the wall only carries the switching signal. That matters for the job: there is no new supply to run, and the work is a like-for-like swap at the wall on the wiring your old thermostat used.

It has a single normally open relay contact. tado° adds a Relay Mode setting in the app for systems that need normally closed behaviour, mostly some underfloor heating, and warns not to choose it when the thermostat is wired straight to a boiler. Lift it off its wall plate and it stops controlling the heating and switches it off.

In the starter kit it comes with a Bridge X, which plugs into a socket near your router and connects the thermostat to the app.

What the pro checks first

  • How the old thermostat is wired: switched live, volt-free contacts or an OpenTherm pair
  • The boiler label, against tado°'s compatibility check for relay or OpenTherm
  • Whether there is a hot water cylinder, which this thermostat cannot control
  • Wi-Fi reach at the socket where the Bridge X will go

What the pro does on the Wired Smart Thermostat X (2nd gen)

  • Power to the heating isolated and checked dead before the old thermostat comes off
  • Existing wires identified: switched live, volt-free, or an OpenTherm pair already at the wall
  • Wall plate fixed with screws, and the wires landed on the matching terminals: COM and NO for relay, + and − for OpenTherm
  • Bridge X plugged in near the router and joined to your Wi-Fi
  • Thermostat woken with the top button, paired, and the boiler tested on and off from the app

Before you book: what to send

  • A photo of your current thermostat, and of its wiring if the front lifts off easily
  • The boiler's make and model, from the label
  • Whether you have a hot water cylinder: if so, the wireless kit suits you better
  • Where your Wi-Fi router is, for the Bridge X

How your existing thermostat wiring maps to the tado° terminals

tado°'s installer manual for the 2nd-gen wired thermostat shows three ways to connect it. The pro reads which one your old thermostat used.

Frequently asked questions

Does the tado° Wired Smart Thermostat X need an electrician?

tado°'s shop says no electrician is needed when it replaces your existing room thermostat on the same wiring. On many homes that wiring carries 230 V, so the power has to be isolated and the wires matched to the right terminals, which is what the pro does. Anything at the boiler itself needs a Gas Safe engineer.

Can it control my hot water cylinder?

No. tado° says the wired thermostat does not control hot water cylinders. Homes with a cylinder need the Wireless Smart Thermostat X kit, whose UK receiver replaces the programmer.

How much does tado° Wired Smart Thermostat X (2nd gen) installation cost in London?

It is a fixed price for your Wired Smart Thermostat X (2nd gen), worked out by a vetted pro from the model, a photo of where it is going and what power is there now, and shown in the JACK app before you book. Other devices can go on the same booking for one price. If you would rather pay for time, hourly hire for smart home is typically £45–£95 per hour as a guide.
