Google Nest Installation in London: Thermostats, Doorbells, Cameras and Protect
Updated
Google does not install Nest devices in UK homes: its UK help says it neither provides nor takes payment for installation, and the Nest Pro finder link on its help pages now leads to Google's US store. Vetted local pros on Jack All Trades (JACK) fit the Nest thermostats, Heat Links, doorbells, cameras and Nest Protects found in London homes, working at the wall and leaving the boiler itself to a Gas Safe registered engineer.
In short
Yes: Jack All Trades (JACK) books vetted pros in London to fit Google Nest thermostats and Heat Links on your existing heating controls wiring, Nest doorbells on battery or existing bell wire, Nest Cams, the Nest Cam with floodlight in place of an outside light, and replacements for expired Nest Protects. JACK sends wiring at the boiler's own terminals, including OpenTherm, to a Gas Safe registered engineer, and a new circuit to a registered electrician. You buy the device, any accessory is agreed at cost, and a pro sets a fixed price in the JACK app before you book.
Tell JACK which Nest device you have, by the name in your Nest or Google Home app or on the box, and send photos of where it goes: the boiler and your old controls for a Heat Link, the bell transformer and chime for a doorbell, the outside light for a floodlight cam. The pro prices the job from those photos, checks the Wi-Fi and wiring before fixing anything, and stays until the heating answers the app, the doorbell rings or the camera streams.
Below: what JACK pros fit across the Nest range, what has changed since 2025, and where the Gas Safe and electrician lines fall.

Google does not install Nest in UK homes. So who does?
Google's UK help page on professional installation sets out where Google stands, as we read it on 1 November 2026:
- Google does not provide, sell or take payment for installation and accepts no liability for it; it suggests finding a trained installer through Google Search and checking them yourself
- Its help pages describe Nest Pros as independent companies or contractors, not Nest employees, and the Pro Finder link they give now redirects to Google's US store
- If a Heat Link needs replacing because of a boiler problem, Google's UK help sends you to its installation partner BOXT, whose booking page asks for a case number from Google Nest customer care
JACK is not part of Nest Pro or any Google installer programme. A JACK pro fits Nest devices however and wherever you bought them, several to a booking.
What decides the cost of Google Nest installation in LondonWhat do JACK pros install across the Google Nest range?
Every Nest device in UK homes that needs fixing, wiring or setting up, by its UK name:
- Thermostats: the Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd gen) with its Heat Link, and the Nest Thermostat E with its battery Heat Link E, fitted, moved or refitted
- Heat Links: a faulty 3rd gen Heat Link swapped like for like at the wall, once you have asked Google Nest customer care whether BOXT can replace it free
- Doorbells: the Nest Doorbell (battery), on its battery or on existing bell wire, and the older wired Nest Hello, refitted or replaced
- Cameras: Nest Cam (battery), Nest Cam Outdoor (wired, 2nd gen), Nest Cam Indoor (wired, 3rd gen), the Nest Cam with floodlight, and older Nest Cam and Nest Cam IQ models
- Nest Protect: expired or chirping alarms replaced, battery or wired 230 V
- Wi-Fi and displays: Nest Wifi Pro, older Nest Wifi and Google Wifi, Nest Hub displays and the Google Home Speaker, set up with one of them as the home's Matter and Thread hub
Some Nest devices were never sold for UK homes: Google's regional list gives the Nest Temperature Sensor (2nd gen), the Nest Doorbell (wired, 3rd gen) and the Nest x Yale lock as Canada and US only.
Older Nest devices in UK homes: which still get updates? What has changed in the Nest range since 2025?
Google has stepped back from heating and alarms in Europe. Four changes matter for a London Nest job:
- No new thermostats: Google said in April 2025 that it will no longer launch new Nest thermostats in Europe, and press reports said the 3rd gen and Thermostat E would stay on sale while stocks last
- Not for UK heating: the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) and the Nest Thermostat (2020) are sold in the US and Canada only, and Google says thermostats made for those countries will not work with European systems, which need a Heat Link and high-voltage support, so JACK pros do not fit imported ones
- 2nd gen support ended: from 25 October 2025 the Nest Learning Thermostat (2nd gen, Europe version, 2014) was removed from the Nest and Google Home apps and stopped getting updates, though the schedule on the device keeps running
- Nest Protect stopped: Google announced in March 2025 that it no longer makes Nest Protect, and its help pages now say the alarm is no longer for sale but is still supported
Google's end-of-support notice names only the 1st and 2nd gen Learning Thermostats; the 3rd gen and the Thermostat E are not on it.
My Nest thermostat stopped working in the app: the 2nd gen end of supportDo you need a Gas Safe engineer for a Nest thermostat?
Not for anything done at the wall. Under the gas safety regulations, work on a control the householder uses is outside the gas rules where no gas-carrying part is broken into, and the HSE's code of practice (L56) gives replacing electric thermostats and timer switches as its example. On a Nest job:
- JACK pro: a 3rd gen Heat Link in place of your programmer, timer or receiver, at the same spot or an external wiring centre, on the existing wiring
- JACK pro: a Heat Link E in place of your wired room thermostat, on its two existing wires
- Gas Safe engineer: Gas Safe Register says a boiler case held on by screws is normally a functional case that only a registered engineer should remove, so JACK sends any wiring at the boiler, including OpenTherm and a first connection on a boiler with no external controls, to a Gas Safe registered engineer
- Gas Safe engineer, too: a Heat Link E that Google's UK terms place next to the boiler, where there is no room thermostat or the boiler has a built-in receiver, unless a wiring centre outside the boiler can take it
- G3-qualified installer: the controls of an unvented (pressurised) hot water cylinder
Google's pages never mention Gas Safe: this line is JACK's, drawn from the HSE code and Gas Safe Register's guidance, and the pro says from your photos which side of it your job sits on.
Who can install a Nest thermostat: Gas Safe engineer or electrician?Which Nest jobs need a registered electrician, and which don't?
In England only three kinds of home electrical work have to be notified to building control: a new circuit, replacing a consumer unit, and additions or alterations near a bath or shower. For Nest that means:
- No mains work at all: battery doorbells and cameras, plug-in Nest Cams, Nest Wifi, Nest Hub and Google Home Speaker set-ups, and battery Nest Protects
- Not notifiable, and done by JACK pros: a Heat Link on existing controls wiring, a Nest doorbell on an existing bell transformer or a like-for-like transformer swap on the same supply, a Nest Cam with floodlight in place of an outside light on the same circuit, a wired Nest Protect replaced on its existing wiring, and an outdoor socket spurred from an existing circuit
- Notifiable, so not booked through JACK: a new circuit from the consumer unit, a transformer on a new way in it, a consumer unit change, and any electrical addition or alteration within a bathroom's zones
Wherever a Nest job touches the 230 V side, ask your pro for a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate. Google's floodlight safety guide says to check local rules because a licensed electrician may be required; in England, replacing an outside light on its existing circuit is not notifiable work.
Will my UK bell transformer and chime work with a Nest doorbell?London homes shape every Nest job
About half of London's homes are flats, and many of its houses are solid-walled Victorian and Edwardian terraces. At the front door and the boiler cupboard that means:
- Wi-Fi at the front: UK versions of the Nest Doorbell (battery), Nest Cam (battery), Nest Cam with floodlight and Nest Protect join 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only, and Ofcom notes that brick internal walls make Wi-Fi harder to spread, so the signal is checked where the device will sit
- Boiler cupboards: Google's UK guide asks for at least 30 cm of space either side of a 3rd gen Heat Link and keeps the thermostat within 30 m of it, which a tight cupboard or a loft boiler may not allow
- Flats: a front door onto a shared corridor is normally a fire door, and the gov.uk fire door guidance says changes to it should have the agreement of the building's Responsible Person, so a Nest doorbell goes on the wall beside it, with consent
- Leasehold, rented and listed homes: Google's UK installation terms put getting consents, such as a landlord's permission or listed building consent, on the customer before work starts
The privacy set-up is part of every Nest camera job
The gov.uk guidance on domestic CCTV says data protection law applies once a camera or doorbell captures people beyond your own boundary. The pro sets these up with you before leaving:
- Activity zones, so the camera wakes for your path and not for every passer-by on a London pavement
- The angle: looking down on your own door, drive or garden rather than into a neighbour's window or garden
- Audio: off unless you need it; in 2021 a County Court found that a neighbour's doorbell and cameras recording audio far beyond his own property breached data protection law
- Your side of it: telling the neighbours, a small notice where a camera sees the street, and deleting clips you no longer need
Google Home Premium Standard keeps 30 days of event video history and Advanced keeps 60; continuous 24/7 recording (up to 10 days, wired cameras and doorbells only) and searching your clips by asking Gemini are Advanced only. JACK never sells or quotes the plan.
Nest Cam installation in London: power, signal and permissionsWhich Google Nest devices can you still buy in the UK, and what does each need?
From Google's UK store and UK help pages as we read them on 1 November 2026. Stock changes, so this records what Google showed that day, not a promise:
| Nest device | Google Store UK, 1 Nov 2026 | Power | What the installation involves |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nest Thermostat E | Add to basket | Heat Link E on two AA lithium (L91) cells; the display plugs in on its stand | Heat Link E in place of your wired room thermostat, on its two wires |
| Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd gen) | Out of stock | Heat Link on 230 V mains through a 3 A fuse; the display takes 12 V DC from it, or sits on a stand with a USB adapter | Heat Link in place of your programmer near the boiler, with heating and hot water relays |
| Nest Doorbell (battery) | Out of stock | Built-in battery, or existing bell wire at 8–24 V AC, 10 VA | Battery only, or wired so your chime keeps ringing |
| Nest Cam with floodlight | Buy | Hardwired at 100–240 V AC; the camera has its own battery | In place of an existing outside light, on its circuit, with a working earth |
| Nest Cam (battery) | Listed, with no out-of-stock notice | Built-in battery charged by USB; optional weatherproof cable | Wall plate or magnetic mount, signal checked first |
| Nest Cam Outdoor (wired, 2nd gen) | Listed, with no out-of-stock notice | 12 V from a 9 W plug-in adaptor on a 5.5 m outdoor-rated cable | Cable to an outdoor socket, or through the wall to one inside |
| Nest Cam Indoor (wired, 3rd gen) | Listed, with no out-of-stock notice | 7.5 W USB-C adaptor on a 3 m attached cable | On a wall or shelf near a socket |
| Nest Protect (2nd gen) | Not in the store; Google says no longer for sale | Six AA lithium cells, or 230 V with three AA backup cells | Expired units replaced, wired ones on the existing alarm wiring |
| Nest Wifi Pro | Buy | Plugs into a socket | Router and points placed for your walls, Matter and Thread set up |
Nest Hub (2nd gen) and Nest Hub Max were out of stock on the same day. Nest Hello is no longer on Google's list of devices sold in the UK, but pros still refit and replace it.
Every Google Nest product guide
One guide per model: how it is powered, what the pro does at the wall, what needs a Gas Safe engineer or an electrician instead, and what to send before you book.
| Product | Type | What the guide covers |
|---|---|---|
| Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd gen) | Thermostats | The UK and Ireland 3rd gen with its mains Heat Link: the Heat Link goes where your programmer was, the display on the wall or a stand. |
| Nest Thermostat E | Thermostats | The Heat Link E swapped in for your wired room thermostat on two of its wires, and the display set on its stand where it reads the room. |
| Nest Heat Link | Thermostats | A failed or badly placed 3rd gen Heat Link swapped or moved on its own wiring; faults inside the boiler go to a Gas Safe engineer. |
| Nest Doorbell (battery) | Doorbells | Google's only UK Nest doorbell: fitted on its battery, or wired to a bell transformer strong enough to charge it and ring the chime. |
| Nest Hello | Doorbells | The 2018 wired Nest doorbell: refitted on a 12–24 V transformer, or swapped for the battery model on the same bell wires. |
| Nest Cam with floodlight | Cameras | A mains floodlight carrying a Nest Cam (battery), fitted upright on a wall in place of your outside light, on the same circuit. |
| Nest Cam (battery) | Cameras | Google's outdoor-or-indoor battery camera, mounted where 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi holds and where it can still come down to charge. |
| Nest Cam Outdoor (wired, 2nd gen) | Cameras | Google's 2025 plug-in outdoor camera, mounted on the wall with its 5.5 m cable taken to the nearest socket. |
How is Google Nest installation priced in London?
A vetted pro prices your Nest job from the model and your photos, and the JACK app shows that fixed price before you book.
On heating, where the Heat Link goes moves the price most: a 3rd gen Heat Link in place of a programmer on the same wiring is the plainest job, while hot water on a cylinder, an S-plan or Y-plan wiring centre or an old wired thermostat to take out of the circuit adds to it. Anything that must be wired at the boiler itself is left out of the price and handed to a Gas Safe registered engineer.
On doorbells and cameras, power comes first: a battery doorbell or Nest Cam with a good 2.4 GHz signal is the lightest job, a weak bell transformer is swapped on its existing supply, and the Nest Cam with floodlight is priced as electrical work on your outside-light circuit. For a camera high on a gable, your pro can ask another pro on JACK to help through the Pro2Pro feature.
JACK does not sell devices, so the Nest kit is yours to buy. Accessories the job needs, such as a bell transformer, a fused spur or an outdoor junction box, are agreed and added at cost before you book, and so is parking where it has to be paid for. Several devices go on one booking for one fixed price. Prefer to pay for time? As a guide, hourly hire is typically £45–£95 per hour for smart home work and £55–£110 per hour for electrical work, and a full-day handyman booking is a flat £350–£400 for up to 8 hours on site.
How it works
Step 1
Send the Nest model and photos
Name the Nest device and photograph where it goes: the boiler label, old controls and any cylinder for heating; the transformer label and chime for a doorbell; the outside light and its switch for a floodlight cam.
Step 2
See the fixed price, then choose a day
A vetted pro prices what you sent and says plainly if any part needs a Gas Safe engineer or a registered electrician instead. Nothing is booked until you accept, and you choose the day.
Step 3
Fitted, tested and handed over
Power isolated and proved dead before any wiring, devices fixed and paired, the boiler fired and stopped or a test ring checked, then schedules and alerts set up in your app with you.

Frequently asked questions
Does Google install Nest devices in the UK?
No. Google's UK help says it does not provide, sell or take payment for installation, and suggests finding an installer through Google Search. The one UK route it names is for a Heat Link that needs replacing because of a boiler problem. JACK books independent, vetted pros in London to fit Nest devices bought anywhere.
Is JACK part of Nest Pro?
No. JACK is not part of Google's Nest Pro programme, and JACK pros are not Nest Pros and hold no Google accreditation. Google describes Nest Pros as independent companies or contractors, and the Pro Finder link on its help pages redirected to Google's US store when we checked on 1 November 2026. JACK pros are independent and vetted by JACK, and the price is fixed in the JACK app before you book.
Does fitting a Nest thermostat need a Gas Safe engineer?
Not for the wall side. Swapping a programmer or room thermostat for a Nest Heat Link on the existing wiring is not gas work under the HSE's code of practice. JACK sends anything wired at the boiler itself, including OpenTherm, to a Gas Safe registered engineer, and its pros do not do that part.
Can I get the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) in the UK?
No. Google sells the 4th gen in the US and Canada only, and says thermostats made for those countries will not work with European heating systems. Google said in April 2025 it will not launch new Nest thermostats in Europe, and on 1 November 2026 the Nest Thermostat E was the only Nest thermostat in stock on Google's UK store; another brand fitted at the wall is the other route.
My Nest thermostat has stopped working in the app. Why?
If it is a 2nd gen Learning Thermostat (Europe version, 2014), Google ended its app support on 25 October 2025: it was taken out of the Nest and Google Home apps and gets no more updates, though the schedule on the device keeps running. A pro can swap it at the wall for a supported thermostat on the same wiring, and the 2nd gen guide shows how to tell which model you have.
Is Nest Protect still sold in the UK?
No. Google no longer makes it, as it announced in March 2025, and its help pages say Protect is no longer for sale, though existing alarms stay supported. Each 2nd gen Protect must be replaced 10 years from its date of manufacture, and where no compatible replacement is sold in your region Google says you may be eligible for a pro-rata refund. A JACK pro replaces expired Protects with the alarms you choose.
Can you fit a Nest device I bought somewhere else?
Yes. JACK does not sell devices, so the pro fits the Nest device you have, whether it came from Google, another shop or with your home. Refits and moves of models Google no longer sells are booked the same way.
How much does Google Nest installation cost in London?
A vetted pro works out a fixed price for your job from the model and your photos, and the JACK app shows it before you book. Where the Heat Link goes, the doorbell's power, the wall and the number of devices move it most, and the device itself is never part of the price. As a guide, hourly hire for smart home work is typically £45–£95 per hour.
Do JACK pros install Hive, tado°, Ring and Philips Hue too?
Yes. Each has its own London guide and books the same way, for a fixed price. If you are replacing a Nest thermostat with Hive or tado°, their switching guides explain what changes at the wall.
Do you install Nest outside London?
No. JACK books pros for London addresses only. The Nest guides here still explain the wiring, Gas Safe and Part P rules in England wherever you live.
