Google Nest Doorbell Installation in London

Updated

Google lists one Nest doorbell for UK homes, the battery model, and many London front doors still carry the wired Nest Hello that came before it. A vetted JACK pro reads your transformer label and chime from photos, fits the doorbell on its battery or on bell wire, and tests the Wi-Fi on your step before drilling.

In short

Yes: a vetted JACK pro in London fits the Nest Doorbell (battery) on its own battery or on existing bell wire, where Google's spec page asks for 8–24 V AC at 10 VA, and refits or replaces the older wired Nest Hello, which needs 12–24 V AC at 8 VA or more in Europe. Wired, the battery model rings your existing wired chime; without wires it cannot, so a Google speaker or display announces visitors instead. The price is fixed, and you see it in the JACK app before booking.

Send the doorbell's name from the box or app, a photo of the door with the wall either side and, if there is a bell already, the chime with its cover off and the transformer label. Google's UK store showed the battery doorbell as out of stock on 1 November 2026, so the pro fits the one you already have or have found elsewhere.

Google Nest doorbells pros install

Each guide covers how the model is powered and mounted, what the pro does and what to send before booking.

Battery or bell wire: what changes for the Nest Doorbell (battery)?

The same doorbell runs either way, and it always works from its battery:

  • On battery alone nothing goes behind it, but Google says a wire-free install cannot ring the chime in your hall
  • On bell wire it trickle-charges and rings your existing wired chime, and Google says it needs no chime connector
  • Wired, Google says it only charges to 80%, so it is charged above that by USB before it goes up, and it cannot charge below 0°C
  • It comes with a 20° wedge and a locking mount, is rated IP54, and joins 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only outside the US

Is your bell transformer strong enough for a Nest doorbell?

Often not, and its label tells the pro before the visit:

  • Many UK bell transformers are rated 8 V at about 8 VA: enough voltage for the battery model, but short of the 10 VA on Google's spec page, so it may need a new transformer or to stay on battery
  • Google's compatibility table gives 10–40 VA for the battery doorbell, and says to measure with a multimeter, as a no-contact tester may not be sensitive enough
  • The Nest Hello needs 12–24 V AC at 8 VA or more, or 10.8–30 V AC measured at the wires, so an 8 V transformer usually has to change
  • Battery-only chimes do not work with Nest doorbells, and Google says intercoms, gate controls and remote doorbells typically don't either

A transformer replaced on its existing supply, a fused spur or the same consumer-unit way, is not notifiable: ask your pro for a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate. One on a new way in the consumer unit is a new circuit, which JACK does not book.

Will my UK bell transformer and chime work with a Nest doorbell?

Is it time to replace your Nest Hello?

The Nest Hello, which Google's help pages now call the Nest Doorbell (wired), is no longer on its list of devices sold in the UK, so many are due a swap or a refit:

  • Its chime connector has four wires, where the newer wired models use two, and Google says to remove it when a battery doorbell goes in
  • The battery doorbell can then reuse the same bell wire, if the transformer meets its 10 VA
  • A Hello that still works can be moved, refitted after decorating, or put back on a stronger transformer
  • Where the chime wires carry no labels, Google says to get a local professional in

Can a Nest doorbell go on a flat's front door?

Usually beside it rather than on it. Flat front doors onto a shared corridor are normally fire doors, and the gov.uk fire door guidance says changes to them should be agreed with the building's Responsible Person:

  • The battery doorbell on the wall beside the door keeps screws and cable out of the fire door and its frame, with the freeholder's or managing agent's written agreement first
  • Google's Indoor Power Adapter, which feeds a doorbell from an inside socket through the wall, is marked US only on one Google page, so JACK pros do not plan around it
  • Any hole through an outside wall in a flat or rented home waits for the owner's consent
  • The entry phone at the street door belongs to the building, and Google says intercoms typically do not work with Nest doorbells

How do the Nest doorbells in UK homes compare?

From Google's camera and doorbell spec page and its doorbell compatibility table. Only the battery model is on Google's list of devices sold in the UK.

For the wired 2nd gen, Google says that in Europe a licensed electrician must fit a new transformer before installation. That is Google's instruction; in England a like-for-like transformer swap on its existing supply is not notifiable work.

How is Google Nest installation priced in London?

A vetted pro prices your Nest job from the model and your photos, and the JACK app shows that fixed price before you book.

On heating, where the Heat Link goes moves the price most: a 3rd gen Heat Link in place of a programmer on the same wiring is the plainest job, while hot water on a cylinder, an S-plan or Y-plan wiring centre or an old wired thermostat to take out of the circuit adds to it. Anything that must be wired at the boiler itself is left out of the price and handed to a Gas Safe registered engineer.

On doorbells and cameras, power comes first: a battery doorbell or Nest Cam with a good 2.4 GHz signal is the lightest job, a weak bell transformer is swapped on its existing supply, and the Nest Cam with floodlight is priced as electrical work on your outside-light circuit. For a camera high on a gable, your pro can ask another pro on JACK to help through the Pro2Pro feature.

JACK does not sell devices, so the Nest kit is yours to buy. Accessories the job needs, such as a bell transformer, a fused spur or an outdoor junction box, are agreed and added at cost before you book, and so is parking where it has to be paid for. Several devices go on one booking for one fixed price. Prefer to pay for time? As a guide, hourly hire is typically £45–£95 per hour for smart home work and £55–£110 per hour for electrical work, and a full-day handyman booking is a flat £350–£400 for up to 8 hours on site.

How it works

Step 1

Send the Nest model and photos

Name the Nest device and photograph where it goes: the boiler label, old controls and any cylinder for heating; the transformer label and chime for a doorbell; the outside light and its switch for a floodlight cam.

Step 2

See the fixed price, then choose a day

A vetted pro prices what you sent and says plainly if any part needs a Gas Safe engineer or a registered electrician instead. Nothing is booked until you accept, and you choose the day.

Step 3

Fitted, tested and handed over

Power isolated and proved dead before any wiring, devices fixed and paired, the boiler fired and stopped or a test ring checked, then schedules and alerts set up in your app with you.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Nest doorbell installation cost in London?

It is a fixed price for your door and model, set by a vetted pro from your photos and shown in the JACK app before you book. A battery-only doorbell with a good signal is the lightest job; a transformer swap and chime set-up add to it. If you would rather pay for time, smart home work is typically £45–£95 per hour as a guide.

Is the Nest Doorbell (battery) discontinued in the UK?

Google has not said so. Its UK store showed the doorbell as out of stock on 1 November 2026, it is still the only Nest doorbell on Google's list of devices sold in the UK, and we found no UK successor announced. A pro fits the one you already have, wherever you bought it.

Can you fit an imported wired Nest Doorbell (2nd or 3rd gen)?

Only on a suitable existing transformer, or after a like-for-like transformer swap on the same supply. Both need 16–24 V AC at 10–40 VA, more than many UK bell transformers give, and Google does not sell either for UK homes. If you have not bought yet, the battery model is the one Google lists for UK homes.

Will my Nest doorbell ring inside the house?

Yes, if it is wired to your bell: the battery model then rings your existing wired chime. On battery alone it can't, so Google suggests a Google speaker or display to announce visitors, and the pro links one in the Google Home app before leaving.

Can you move my Nest doorbell to a new house?

Yes, within London: the pro takes it down, fills the holes and fits it at the new door, and it is set up again in your Google Home app there. The transformer at the new address decides whether it can be wired or stays on battery.
