Google Nest Hello Installation in London

Updated

Nest Hello is the 2018 wired doorbell that Google's help pages now call Nest Doorbell (wired), the model before the wired 2nd and 3rd gen. Google no longer lists it among the devices it sells in the UK, so this page is for Hellos already on London doors: refitting one, sorting its power, or replacing it. A vetted JACK pro measures the bell supply, deals with the chime connector and gives you a fixed price in the JACK app before you book.

In short

Yes. A vetted JACK pro in London refits or replaces a Nest Hello. It is wired only, and for Europe Google asks for bell wires measuring 10.8–30 V AC, or a transformer labelled 12–24 V AC at 8 VA or more, which a common 8 V UK bell transformer does not reach. Replacing it with the Nest Doorbell (battery) reuses the same wires once the Hello's four-wire chime connector is taken out.

Device facts come from Google Nest Help (UK), the Google Store UK and Google's UK installation guide, linked beside each fact. Several Nest models are out of stock or no longer sold in the UK, so these pages are written for the device you already own: check its name on the box, in the app or on its base, and send it with your request. How the Nest Hello is powered and mounted

The Hello draws all its power from the bell circuit, so the transformer matters more than it does for a battery doorbell. Google's figures for Europe are 10.8–30 V AC measured at the wires, or a transformer labelled 12–24 V AC at 8 VA or more. Plenty of UK bell transformers are 8 V units, which sit below that floor, so the pro measures the supply at the wires before anything else is decided.

Changing an 8 V transformer for a 12 V or 24 V one, on the same fused spur or circuit, counts as a replacement in England: it is mains work, but it is not notifiable. Ask your pro for a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate for that part. Fitting one on a spare way in the fuse board is different: that is a new circuit, notifiable work for a registered electrician that JACK does not take on.

With the Hello gone from Google's UK list, many owners replace it rather than refit it. The bell wires that fed the Hello can feed a Nest Doorbell (battery) too, as long as the transformer gives the battery model's 10 VA. The Hello's four-wire chime connector comes out from inside the chime during the swap, and the new doorbell is set to ring the chime from the app.

What the pro checks first

  • The AC voltage measured at the doorbell wires, against Google's 10.8 V floor for Europe
  • Where the transformer is: inside the chime, on a fused spur, or in the consumer unit
  • The chime connector inside the chime, and whether the chime is mechanical or electronic
  • The 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi signal at the door
  • Whether you want the Hello refitted or replaced with the battery model

What the pro does on the Nest Hello

  • Bell circuit isolated before the chime cover or transformer is opened
  • An 8 V transformer changed for a 12 V or 24 V one where you agreed it, added at cost
  • Hello refitted on its plate, or taken down to make way for the battery model
  • Four-wire chime connector checked and refitted, or removed if the Hello is being replaced
  • Doorbell joined to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and the chime tested with a press
  • For any 230 V transformer work, ask your pro for a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate

How the Nest Hello installation goes

  1. 1Your photos of the doorbell, chime and transformer checked before the visit
  2. 2Voltage at the doorbell wires measured with the bell circuit live
  3. 3Bell circuit isolated before any transformer or chime work
  4. 4Transformer replaced where agreed, and the chime connector refitted or removed
  5. 5Hello, or the battery doorbell replacing it, fixed back on and powered up
  6. 6Wi-Fi, chime and alerts tested in the app

Before you book: what to send

  • A photo of the Hello on the door frame, and of the chime with its cover on
  • A photo of the transformer label, wherever the transformer is
  • Whether you want the Hello refitted or replaced, and which doorbell you have for it
  • Where the router is in relation to the front door

Frequently asked questions

What can replace a Nest Hello in the UK?

The only Nest doorbell Google lists for the UK is the Nest Doorbell (battery), and it can run off the Hello's bell wires if the transformer gives 10 VA. Google does not sell the wired 2nd or 3rd gen Nest doorbell in the UK; an imported one needs a 16–24 V AC transformer of 10–40 VA.

Will a Nest Hello work on an 8 V transformer?

Google's European spec asks for at least 10.8 V AC measured at the wires, or a transformer labelled 12–24 V AC at 8 VA or more, so an 8 V transformer falls short. A 12 V or 24 V transformer on the same supply is the usual fix.

Why does Google say a licensed electrician should fit a new transformer?

It is Google's instruction for the Nest Doorbell (wired, 2nd gen) in Europe and Australia: its help says a licensed electrician must fit a new transformer before that doorbell goes in. The sentence names the 2nd gen, not the Hello, and England has no licence for electricians in law: replacing a bell transformer on its existing supply is not notifiable under Part P. It is still mains work, so ask your pro for a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate.

How much does Google Nest Hello installation cost in London?

It is a fixed price for your Nest Hello, worked out by a vetted pro from the model, a photo of where it is going and what power is there now, and shown in the JACK app before you book. Other devices can go on the same booking for one price. If you would rather pay for time, hourly hire for smart home is typically £45–£95 per hour as a guide.
