Google Nest · Replacing Nest Protect among wired alarms
Replacing Nest Protect in a Home With Wired, Interlinked Alarms
Updated
Google dates the Nest Protect's release to June 2015, and each 2nd gen unit must be replaced 10 years after it was made, so the earliest units are already past that date. Google says a Protect cannot interconnect with other makers' alarms, which matters in homes with wired alarms. Checked on 1 November 2026.
In short
Google no longer sells Nest Protect, and each 2nd gen unit is due for replacement 10 years after it was made. Because Protects interconnect wirelessly and, Google says, cannot interconnect with other makers' alarms, a home with mains-interlinked alarms is best served by replacing every head with one current interlinked system; in England, swapping a mains alarm on the same wiring is not notifiable, while a new alarm circuit is. Landlords must have a smoke alarm on each storey with living accommodation, plus a carbon monoxide alarm in any living-space room with a fixed combustion appliance, gas cookers excepted.

Where does Nest Protect stand now?
Google's help pages, and its March 2025 announcement as reported by 9to5Google, give this picture:
- Google stopped making Nest Protect; its help pages say it is no longer available for sale but is still supported, with existing units working until they expire
- In the US, Google steers customers to the First Alert SC5, an alarm that works with Nest Protect, and it names no replacement for the UK
- Google says a 2nd gen Protect has to be replaced 10 years after its manufacture date; the Replace by date is in the Nest and Google Home apps, with app warnings three months, one month and seven days ahead
- Once expired, it chirps continuously, and its light ring turns yellow at the nightly check
- First-time set-up and factory resets still need the Nest app, not the Google Home app
You may be owed a refund on an expiring Protect
Google's replacement page says you may be eligible for a pro-rata refund if a replacement compatible with Nest Protect is not available in your region, and Google names a compatible successor only for the US. Its conditions:
- One refund per household
- Homes where every Protect is close to its replacement date may not qualify
- Refunds are paid as Google Store credit or by bank transfer
Check with Google before booking the replacement. JACK has no part in Google's refund process.
Why won't a Nest Protect link to your other wired alarms?
Mains alarms in UK homes are often interlinked by an extra core in the cable, so one sounding sets off the rest. Nest Protect works differently:
- Protects interconnect only wirelessly, over Weave on 802.15.4, within about 15 m, and the link keeps working if the Wi-Fi drops
- Wired 230 V and battery Protects interconnect with each other
- Google says Nest Protect cannot communicate or interconnect with smoke or CO alarms from other manufacturers
- Google's UK wired guide says there is no need for the interconnect wire, and to insulate it if there is one
So a Protect put in place of one alarm in a wired, interlinked set ends up on its own, and so does another brand's alarm put in place of one Protect. Now that Protect is not sold, the usual answer is to replace every head together with one current interlinked system.
What does replacing a wired Nest Protect involve?
The UK wired Protect (model A14) takes live, neutral and earth through Google's 230 V connector and keeps three Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA cells as backup. Google's UK guide recommends professional installation, with the connection to the fixed wiring made in a suitable junction box. Under England's electrical rules:
- A new alarm in place of an existing mains alarm, in the same position on the same circuit, is a replacement and not notifiable
- Adding a mains alarm that takes its supply from an existing lighting circuit is also not notifiable, as an addition to that circuit
- Running a dedicated alarm circuit from the consumer unit is notifiable work for a registered electrician, which JACK does not book
- Brands use their own base plates, so a new alarm usually goes up on its own base over the existing box
Google's UK guide puts a Protect on the ceiling at least 30 cm from a wall and at least 3 m from cooking appliances. For any alarm on the mains, ask your pro for a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate.
What must landlords in England fit?
The Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm (England) Regulations 2015, as amended in 2022, apply to private and social rented homes:
- A smoke alarm on every storey with a room used as living accommodation, a duty on private landlords since 1 October 2015
- A carbon monoxide alarm in each room used as living accommodation that contains a fixed combustion appliance, gas cookers aside, required since 1 October 2022, when social landlords came under the rules too
- A bathroom or lavatory counts as living accommodation, so one with a gas boiler needs a CO alarm
- Alarms checked on the day a new tenancy begins, and repaired or replaced as soon as reasonably practicable after a tenant reports a fault
- The regulations do not say whether alarms must be mains or battery powered
New building work is different: Approved Document B asks for mains smoke alarms to BS EN 14604 with a standby supply, at least Grade D2 Category LD3 to BS 5839-6. A JACK pro fits the alarms you choose and does not certify a home as compliant.
Photos of each alarm let the pro price the whole set
A JACK pro prices alarm work from photos, with the fixed price in the JACK app before you book. London addresses only. Send:
- Each alarm on the ceiling, with its label or Replace by date if you can see it
- Whether each is battery or wired: Google says a green light on the front marks a wired Protect
- The replacement alarms you have bought or plan to buy
JACK does not sell alarms. Base plates or junction boxes are agreed at cost before you book, and expired Protects are left with you for recycling.

How is Google Nest installation priced in London?
A vetted pro prices your Nest job from the model and your photos, and the JACK app shows that fixed price before you book.
On heating, where the Heat Link goes moves the price most: a 3rd gen Heat Link in place of a programmer on the same wiring is the plainest job, while hot water on a cylinder, an S-plan or Y-plan wiring centre or an old wired thermostat to take out of the circuit adds to it. Anything that must be wired at the boiler itself is left out of the price and handed to a Gas Safe registered engineer.
On doorbells and cameras, power comes first: a battery doorbell or Nest Cam with a good 2.4 GHz signal is the lightest job, a weak bell transformer is swapped on its existing supply, and the Nest Cam with floodlight is priced as electrical work on your outside-light circuit. For a camera high on a gable, your pro can ask another pro on JACK to help through the Pro2Pro feature.
JACK does not sell devices, so the Nest kit is yours to buy. Accessories the job needs, such as a bell transformer, a fused spur or an outdoor junction box, are agreed and added at cost before you book, and so is parking where it has to be paid for. Several devices go on one booking for one fixed price. Prefer to pay for time? As a guide, hourly hire is typically £45–£95 per hour for smart home work and £55–£110 per hour for electrical work, and a full-day handyman booking is a flat £350–£400 for up to 8 hours on site.
Frequently asked questions
Can you still buy Nest Protect in the UK?
No. Google stopped making it, announcing the change in March 2025, and no longer sells it, though it still supports units already fitted until they expire. Google offers a successor only to US customers.
What should replace an expired Nest Protect in the UK?
One current system of alarms: smoke alarms meeting BS EN 14604 and carbon monoxide alarms meeting BS EN 50291-1. If your other alarms are wired and interlinked, replace them together so every head links to the rest.
Can a Nest Protect be interlinked with other brands of alarm?
No. Google says Nest Protect cannot interconnect with alarms from other manufacturers, and its UK wired guide says to insulate any interconnect wire rather than use it.
Do I need an electrician to replace a wired Nest Protect?
Swapping a mains alarm for another in the same position, on the same circuit, is not notifiable in England, so a competent pro can do it; Google recommends professional installation. A new circuit for alarms needs a registered electrician.
Do landlords have to fit mains-wired smoke alarms?
Not under the rented-home regulations, which leave the power type open. GOV.UK's guidance for landlords adds that, where battery alarms are chosen, sealed-for-life batteries are the better option.
