Older Nest Devices in UK Homes: Which Still Get Updates?
Updated
A Nest Hello, an early Nest Cam or a set of Nest Wifi points can stay on the wall for years. Some are still updated by Google, some have lost support, and several are no longer sold. This guide sets out what Google's own pages say, device by device, as checked on 1 November 2026.
In short
Google promises critical security updates for at least five years after each device's release, and for most Nest devices in UK homes, including the Nest Hello, Nest Protect and the 3rd gen Learning Thermostat, that minimum has passed, though Google's list still shows them receiving updates. Support has ended for the 1st and 2nd gen Learning Thermostats, Dropcam and Nest Secure, and Google no longer sells Nest Wifi or Google Wifi. A JACK pro in London can refit, move or replace older Nest devices, checking Google's list for the model first.

How does Google's security-update promise work?
Google's security-updates page for its connected home devices gives each one a release date and a minimum period for critical security updates:
- The minimum is five years from the release date
- On 1 November 2026, the only device Google marked as no longer receiving critical updates was the Chromecast (1st gen)
- The release dates are US launch dates, and some UK models launched later
- Google Store UK words it the same way for the Nest Thermostat E: updates for at least five years from the date Google starts selling it on the US Google Store
A passed minimum does not mean updates have stopped, only that Google no longer guarantees them.
Which Nest devices has Google stopped supporting?
Google's own pages list these as ended:
- Nest Learning Thermostat (1st and 2nd gen, including the 2nd gen Europe version): removed from the apps on 25 October 2025, though each still heats on its stored schedule
- Dropcam and Dropcam Pro: support ended on 8 April 2024
- Nest Secure alarm: Google says support is discontinued, and that its cellular backup service was cancelled by 20 May 2024
Which Nest devices are no longer sold but still updated?
These remain on Google's update list with no end of support, but Google no longer sells them, or its UK store shows no stock:
- Nest Hello (Nest Doorbell, wired, 1st gen): not on Google's UK availability list, where the battery Nest Doorbell is the only Nest doorbell
- Nest Cam Indoor and Outdoor (1st gen) and Nest Cam IQ Indoor and Outdoor: 9to5Google reported in 2021 that Google stopped selling them when its new cameras arrived, and that software support would continue
- Nest Protect: no longer for sale, and supported until each unit's replacement date, 10 years from manufacture
- Nest Wifi and Google Wifi: Google says it no longer sells them
- Nest Hub (2nd gen) and Nest Hub Max: out of stock on Google Store UK on 1 November 2026; no Google statement on their future was found
What does a pro check before refitting an older Nest?
Moving or refitting an older Nest is often worth doing, but each model has its own limits:
- The exact model, from the app or the label, and where it sits on Google's update list
- Nest Hello at a new door: Google's European figure of a 12–24 V AC transformer at 8 VA or more, and its four-wire chime connector
- Nest Cam Outdoor (1st gen): a 3 m fixed cable plus a 4.5 m adaptor cable, so a socket within 7.5 m
- Nest Cam IQ Outdoor: a 7.5 m cable to Google's Indoor Power Adapter, so the adapter goes inside
- Both older outdoor cameras use 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only in Europe, so the signal at the new spot is tested first
- Nest Wifi Pro cannot join a Nest Wifi or Google Wifi mesh, so old and new routers cannot be mixed
Naming the old device is how the pro prices a refit
Refits and replacements are priced by a JACK pro from photos, with one fixed price shown in the JACK app before you book. If a device is moving, both addresses must be in London. Send:
- The device's name in the Google Home or Nest app, or a photo of its label
- Where it is now and where it is going
- For a doorbell, the transformer label; for a camera, the nearest socket
JACK does not sell devices. Any adaptor, mount or transformer is agreed at cost before you book.
Book smart home installationHow long does Google guarantee updates for each Nest device?
From Google's security-updates page, read on 1 November 2026. Every device here was still listed as receiving critical security updates; a passed minimum means the guarantee has run out, not the updates.

Google's dates are US release dates, not UK ones. The page does not separate the European Learning Thermostat from the North American one.
How is Google Nest installation priced in London?
A vetted pro prices your Nest job from the model and your photos, and the JACK app shows that fixed price before you book.
On heating, where the Heat Link goes moves the price most: a 3rd gen Heat Link in place of a programmer on the same wiring is the plainest job, while hot water on a cylinder, an S-plan or Y-plan wiring centre or an old wired thermostat to take out of the circuit adds to it. Anything that must be wired at the boiler itself is left out of the price and handed to a Gas Safe registered engineer.
On doorbells and cameras, power comes first: a battery doorbell or Nest Cam with a good 2.4 GHz signal is the lightest job, a weak bell transformer is swapped on its existing supply, and the Nest Cam with floodlight is priced as electrical work on your outside-light circuit. For a camera high on a gable, your pro can ask another pro on JACK to help through the Pro2Pro feature.
JACK does not sell devices, so the Nest kit is yours to buy. Accessories the job needs, such as a bell transformer, a fused spur or an outdoor junction box, are agreed and added at cost before you book, and so is parking where it has to be paid for. Several devices go on one booking for one fixed price. Prefer to pay for time? As a guide, hourly hire is typically £45–£95 per hour for smart home work and £55–£110 per hour for electrical work, and a full-day handyman booking is a flat £350–£400 for up to 8 hours on site.
Frequently asked questions
Is my Nest Hello still getting updates?
Google's security-updates page still lists the Nest Hello as receiving critical updates, though its guaranteed five-year minimum, counted from the US release, passed on 31 March 2023. For the UK, Google's availability list now names only the battery doorbell.
Does Google still support the Nest Cam IQ?
Yes, as of 1 November 2026: it appears on Google's update list, and when Google stopped selling its older cameras in 2021, 9to5Google reported that software support would continue. Its guaranteed minimum ran to 28 June 2022.
Can Nest Wifi Pro work with my old Nest Wifi points?
No. Google says the Wifi Pro does not form a mesh with Nest Wifi or Google Wifi, so moving to it means replacing the whole set rather than adding to it.
What happened to Dropcam and Nest Secure?
Google ended support for Dropcam and Dropcam Pro on 8 April 2024. Its Nest Secure page says support is discontinued and that the alarm's cellular backup was cancelled by 20 May 2024. Neither can be brought back by a pro.
Can a pro move my older Nest devices to a new home?
If both addresses are in London, yes. Doorbells and cameras come down at the old home and go up at the new one once power and Wi-Fi there are checked; a Nest Protect past its replacement date should be replaced, not moved.
