Nest Thermostat Gone From the App? The 2nd Gen End of Support Explained

Updated

If your Nest thermostat dropped out of the app in late October 2025, it is most likely a 2nd gen, the model Google first released in Europe in 2014. This guide covers what Google switched off, what the thermostat still does by itself, how to check which Nest you have and what replacing it at the wall involves.

In short

Google ended support for the Nest Learning Thermostat (2nd gen, Europe version, 2014) on 25 October 2025: it was unpaired and removed from the Nest and Google Home apps, and remote control, notifications and software and security updates stopped. The schedules already on the thermostat, and changes made on the device itself, still work, so your heating keeps running. A JACK pro in London can swap it, at the wall and on the existing wiring, for a smart thermostat that its maker still supports.

What stopped working on 25 October 2025?

Google's notice covers the Nest Learning Thermostat (1st gen, 2011), the 2nd gen (2012) and the 2nd gen Europe version (2014). From 25 October 2025 these ended:

  • Remote control, status, notifications and settings in the Nest and Google Home apps
  • Control through third-party assistants
  • Cloud features such as Home/Away Assist and Eco across several devices
  • Software and security updates
  • The link to Nest Protect alarms, so Emergency Shut-off no longer works

Your heating keeps running on the thermostat itself

Google says the schedules already stored on the thermostat, mode changes and settings made on the device all carry on after the cut-off. What changes is that every adjustment now has to be made at the thermostat, with no further security fixes, and Google warns that performance may decline over time.

How do you tell which Nest thermostat you have?

Google's notice links its own article on telling Nest thermostats apart. The Heat Link is a quick clue too, because Google gives each version a different number of status lights:

  • 2nd gen Heat Link: one light, with no OpenTherm and no hot water control
  • 3rd gen Heat Link: three lights, with OpenTherm and control of a separate hot water cylinder
  • Heat Link E: two lights and replaceable batteries, usually on the wall where a room thermostat was

The 3rd gen Learning Thermostat and the Nest Thermostat E are not in Google's notice and still work in the app.

What are your options now?

Once a 2nd gen has left Google's apps, the choices are:

  • Leave it running offline, on the schedule it already holds, and adjust it by hand
  • Fit a supported Nest: on 1 November 2026 Google Store UK offered the Nest Thermostat E and showed the 3rd gen as out of stock
  • Move to another brand: JACK pros fit Hive and tado° as well as Nest, and the old Heat Link's wiring is usually where the new receiver connects
  • Recycle the old unit: Google's notice offers a recycling label
  • Community projects that restore local control to old Nest thermostats exist, but they are not Google's, and JACK pros do not install them

What does a replacement at the wall involve?

Whichever thermostat takes over from the 2nd gen, the job follows the same pattern:

  • The 2nd gen Heat Link, near the heating system where a programmer would be, comes off, and the new receiver or Heat Link goes on the same wiring
  • The old Nest thermostat and its base come off the wall
  • The pro checks that the boiler still switches off when neither heating nor hot water is called for
  • Anything that has to be connected at the boiler's own terminals is left to a Gas Safe registered engineer, outside the JACK booking

Ask your pro for a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate for the mains wiring.

A photo of the Heat Link is enough to start a fixed price

A JACK pro prices the replacement from photos, and the fixed price appears in the JACK app before you book. London addresses only. Send:

  • The Heat Link, showing its status lights, and the thermostat on the wall
  • The boiler's make and model, and any hot water cylinder
  • The thermostat you want to fit, if you have chosen one

You buy the new thermostat; JACK does not sell devices. Any parts the swap needs are agreed at cost before you book.

How is Google Nest installation priced in London?

A vetted pro prices your Nest job from the model and your photos, and the JACK app shows that fixed price before you book.

On heating, where the Heat Link goes moves the price most: a 3rd gen Heat Link in place of a programmer on the same wiring is the plainest job, while hot water on a cylinder, an S-plan or Y-plan wiring centre or an old wired thermostat to take out of the circuit adds to it. Anything that must be wired at the boiler itself is left out of the price and handed to a Gas Safe registered engineer.

On doorbells and cameras, power comes first: a battery doorbell or Nest Cam with a good 2.4 GHz signal is the lightest job, a weak bell transformer is swapped on its existing supply, and the Nest Cam with floodlight is priced as electrical work on your outside-light circuit. For a camera high on a gable, your pro can ask another pro on JACK to help through the Pro2Pro feature.

JACK does not sell devices, so the Nest kit is yours to buy. Accessories the job needs, such as a bell transformer, a fused spur or an outdoor junction box, are agreed and added at cost before you book, and so is parking where it has to be paid for. Several devices go on one booking for one fixed price. Prefer to pay for time? As a guide, hourly hire is typically £45–£95 per hour for smart home work and £55–£110 per hour for electrical work, and a full-day handyman booking is a flat £350–£400 for up to 8 hours on site.

Frequently asked questions

Will my 2nd gen Nest thermostat stop heating my home?

No. Google says the schedules already on the thermostat and changes made on the device keep working. What you lose is the app, remote control, the link to Nest Protect and further security updates.

Can I add my 2nd gen Nest back to the Google Home app?

No. Google's notice says the thermostat is unpaired and removed from both the Nest and Google Home apps, and it lists app control among the features that end.

Is the 3rd gen Nest Learning Thermostat affected?

No. Google's notice names the 1st gen and the two 2nd gen models only. The 3rd gen Learning Thermostat and the Nest Thermostat E were not included.

Did UK owners get a discount on a replacement?

Google's notice offered eligible EU Nest users a single-use code for half off the latest tado° thermostat, valid until 30 November 2025 and capped at three units per home. The notice does not mention UK owners, and the offer has ended.

Can a new thermostat use my old Nest wiring?

Usually. The 2nd gen Heat Link sits where a programmer would, so another receiver normally goes on the same wiring at the wall. If the Heat Link was wired into the boiler's own terminals, the boiler end of the swap is for a Gas Safe registered engineer, outside the JACK booking.
