Google Nest Cam (battery) Installation in London

Updated

Google lists this camera for the UK as Nest Cam (outdoor or indoor, battery). It runs on a built-in battery, sits on a magnetic mount, and can be kept charged by a weatherproof cable that Google sells separately. A vetted JACK pro in London tests the Wi-Fi at the spot, fixes the mount where the camera is hard to grab but still easy to take down for charging, and pairs it, at a price fixed in the JACK app before you book.

In short

Yes. A vetted JACK pro in London fits the Nest Cam (battery) indoors or outside with no wiring: the wall plate is fixed and the camera sits on it magnetically. In Europe it only uses 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, which the pro checks at the mounting point before drilling. For permanent power, Google sells a weatherproof cable separately, run to a socket.

Device facts come from Google Nest Help (UK), the Google Store UK and Google's UK installation guide, linked beside each fact. Several Nest models are out of stock or no longer sold in the UK, so these pages are written for the device you already own: check its name on the box, in the app or on its base, and send it with your request. How the Nest Cam (battery) is powered and mounted

Nothing about this camera needs wiring. The battery is built in, and charging is by a magnetic cable and a USB adaptor meant for indoors, within Google's 0–40°C charging range. So the camera comes off its mount to charge, unless you add Google's weatherproof cable, sold separately, which keeps it powered from a socket. With that cable, the route back to a socket becomes the main part of the job.

The magnetic mount is quick to fit and just as quick to lift off. On a London front wall within reach of the pavement, the pro sets the camera higher, or uses its 1/4-inch thread with a screw-fixed mount you have chosen, so it cannot simply be pulled away. Indoors it can sit on the same wall plate or on Google's stand, sold separately.

Wi-Fi is the usual limit. In Europe this camera uses 2.4 GHz only, and solid brick walls with the router at the back of the house can leave little signal at the front. The pro checks the live view at the exact spot before drilling; if it struggles, you choose between moving the camera and adding a mesh point before anything is fixed.

What the pro checks first

  • The 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi signal and live view at the exact mounting spot
  • How high the camera can go while still coming down safely to charge
  • Whether the surface is metal, brick, render or timber
  • If you want the weatherproof cable, the route to a socket and any wall or frame it would cross
  • What the 130° view takes in beyond your boundary

What the pro does on the Nest Cam (battery)

  • Camera charged and added to the app before it goes up
  • Wall plate drilled and plugged for brick, render or timber, or the camera set straight onto metal
  • Weatherproof cable clipped along its route to a socket where you have one, with any hole through the wall sealed
  • Activity zones drawn so the street and neighbours' gardens do not trigger alerts
  • Live view and a walk-past test checked with you

How the Nest Cam (battery) installation goes

  1. 1Battery charged and the camera set up in the app
  2. 2Wi-Fi tested at the planned spot
  3. 3Wall plate fixed at a height agreed with you
  4. 4Camera placed on the magnetic mount and angled
  5. 5Weatherproof cable routed and clipped, if you have one
  6. 6Zones and alerts set up and tested

Before you book: what to send

  • A photo of the spot, and of the view you want covered
  • Whether the camera is going inside or out, and roughly how high
  • Whether you have Google's weatherproof cable, and where the nearest socket is
  • Where your router is
  • In a flat or rental, consent for the fixings and any hole through a wall

Frequently asked questions

Does the Nest Cam (battery) have to come down to charge?

Yes, unless it has permanent power. It charges through a magnetic cable and a USB adaptor meant for indoor use. Google's weatherproof cable, sold separately, keeps it charged on the wall from a socket instead.

Does the Nest Cam (battery) work on 5 GHz Wi-Fi?

Not in Europe: Google lists it as 2.4 GHz only here. Routers that broadcast both bands are fine, as the camera simply joins the 2.4 GHz one, but the signal needs testing at the spot.

Can the Nest Cam (battery) be used indoors?

Yes. Google sells it as an outdoor or indoor camera, and indoors it can sit on its wall plate or on the Nest Cam stand, sold separately. If cleaners, nannies or lodgers come into the home, tell them where the cameras are.

How much does Google Nest Cam (battery) installation cost in London?

It is a fixed price for your Nest Cam (battery), worked out by a vetted pro from the model, a photo of where it is going and what power is there now, and shown in the JACK app before you book. Other devices can go on the same booking for one price. If you would rather pay for time, hourly hire for smart home is typically £45–£95 per hour as a guide.
