Philips Hue GU10 Smart Spotlight Installation in London

Updated

The Hue GU10 smart spotlight is a lamp, not a fitting: it twists into the GU10 lampholder of a downlight you already have, in place of an ordinary mains spot. Nothing in the ceiling is cut or rewired, which is why JACK pros fit Hue GU10s into existing fire-rated downlights in London flats rather than cutting holes for new ones. A vetted JACK pro checks each lamp seats properly in your cans, swaps a ceiling-full and sets them up on your Hue Bridge, for a fixed price in the JACK app before you book.

In short

Yes. A vetted JACK pro in London fits Philips Hue GU10 smart spotlights into the GU10 downlights you already have, with no ceiling work, as long as each 57.8 mm Hue lamp seats fully in its can and the circuit has a plain switch rather than an old dimmer. More than 10 spots, or voice control, needs a Hue Bridge. In a flat with another flat above, this is how JACK adds Hue to a downlit ceiling, because JACK's own rule bars cutting new downlight holes there.

How the GU10 Smart Spotlight is powered and mounted

A Hue GU10 runs on the same mains supply as the spot it replaces, so the job happens at the lampholder: the old lamp twists out, the Hue lamp twists in, and the electrical installation in the ceiling is left exactly as it was. Hue gives the White and colour ambiance version as 50 mm across and 57.8 mm long, and retailers note that Hue GU10s are longer than many standard spots. In an open downlight that rarely matters. In a closed, fire-rated can it might, so before you buy a full set it is worth trying one lamp in one can, and the pro checks that every lamp seats fully and the bezel closes without force.

Heat is the other limit. The GU10's page says nothing about enclosed or fire-rated fittings, but Hue's FAQ says even Hue bulbs 'should not be placed in fully sealed, non-rated fixtures without ventilation', because trapped heat shortens an LED's life, one more reason the pro never forces a lamp into a can it barely fits. The pro also looks at what sits behind the switch: Hue says older dimmers made for incandescent bulbs can make LEDs flicker and tells owners to avoid mechanical dimmers on its bulbs, and a spot switched off at the wall drops out of the app until the power comes back.

Numbers decide the hub. Hue's Bluetooth mode controls up to 10 lights from one phone or control device, and a London kitchen or open-plan ceiling often has more spots than that, so most ceilings go on a Hue Bridge, which also brings voice control and Matter. The Essential GU10 adds a second route: it has Matter over Thread built in, so it can join Apple Home, Google Home or Alexa directly through a Thread border router, though Hue says the Bridge keeps the most features.

What the pro checks first

  • The lampholder in each downlight: a GU10 twist-lock, not the two thin pins of a 12 V MR16, which needs Hue's MR16 instead
  • Whether the downlights are closed fire-rated cans, and how much depth is inside them for a 57.8 mm lamp
  • What controls the circuit: a plain switch, a dimmer, a timer or a sensor
  • How many spots the room has, since more than 10 means a Hue Bridge
  • Whether there is another flat above, which keeps the job to lamps in the existing downlights

What the pro does on the GU10 Smart Spotlight

  • Circuit switched off and old lamps left to cool before any of them comes out
  • One Hue GU10 test-fitted first, so you see it seat and the bezel close before the rest go in
  • Remaining lamps changed can by can, with the old ones left with you
  • Each spot added to your Hue Bridge and named by position, so a ceiling of identical lamps can be told apart
  • Rooms, zones and scenes built, and power-on behaviour set so the spots come back as you want after a power cut
  • A dimmer on the circuit flagged before the visit, so it can be swapped for a plain switch or a Hue module by a pro who does electrical work

How the GU10 Smart Spotlight installation goes

  1. 1Photos of the ceiling, one downlight and the wall switch reviewed before the visit
  2. 2Power off, one Hue GU10 test-fitted and the fit agreed with you
  3. 3The rest of the old lamps swapped for Hue GU10s
  4. 4Spots added to the Hue Bridge, or paired over Bluetooth in a small room
  5. 5Rooms, scenes and the wall switch or Hue remote set up in the app
  6. 6Every spot checked on, off, dimmed and in colour before the pro leaves

Before you book: what to send

  • A photo of the ceiling showing every downlight in the room, and how many there are
  • A close photo of one downlight with its bezel, and of the lamp's base if it comes out easily
  • A photo of the wall switch, so a dimmer can be spotted in advance
  • Whether you live in a flat with another flat above
  • Whether you already have the Hue GU10s and a Hue Bridge: JACK does not sell them, so you buy them and the pro fits them

Why do JACK pros fit Hue GU10s, not new downlights, in London flats?

Because of the ceiling, not the lamp. The reasoning, and where JACK's own rule goes further than the guidance:

  • Approved Document B treats every floor between two flats as a compartment floor, which must form a complete barrier to fire
  • Its Table B2 usually rates that floor at 30 or 60 minutes, depending on the building's height, and every hole cut in it has to keep the rating
  • Hue's UK recessed spotlights, Centura, Milliskin, Adore and Xamento, state no fire rating on their product pages
  • So JACK's own rule, not a line from the Building Regulations, is no new downlight holes in a ceiling with another flat above, and no swapping a fire-rated downlight for one with no stated rating
  • Hue GU10s go into the fire-rated downlights already there instead, which needs no ceiling work at all

Leasehold flats often need the freeholder's consent for ceiling alterations, which this lamp swap avoids.

Are Philips Hue downlights fire rated, and can they go in a flat?

Will a Hue GU10 work in the downlights you have?

What is in the ceiling now decides whether this is a lamp swap or a different job.

What is in your ceilingCan a Hue GU10 go in?What decides it
Open GU10 downlights or a spotlight barYesA straight lamp swap, then set-up on the Bridge
Closed fire-rated GU10 downlightsUsuallyWhether the 57.8 mm lamp seats fully and the bezel closes; one is tried first
GU10 downlights below another flatYes, into the existing cansJACK's own rule: no new holes in that ceiling, and the fire-rated downlights stay
Sealed bathroom downlights that take a GU10As a lamp swap onlyJACK does no fixed electrical work in a bathroom's zones, so the fitting itself stays as it is
12 V downlights with two thin pinsNoThese take Hue's MR16 and a compatible transformer instead
Integrated LED downlightsNoThere is no lamp to change; replacing the fitting is electrical work
Downlights on a dimmerYes, once the dimmer goesHue says older dimmers made for incandescent bulbs can make LEDs flicker

Hue's own UK recessed range is Centura, Milliskin, Adore and Xamento, each with a 70 mm cut-out and a GU10 lamp included; they are fittings, covered on the downlights page.

Frequently asked questions

Will Philips Hue GU10 bulbs fit my fire-rated downlights?

Often, but try one first. Hue gives the GU10 smart spotlight as 57.8 mm long and 50 mm across and says nothing about fire-rated fittings, and Hue GU10s run longer than many standard spots. The pro test-fits one lamp in one can, checks it seats fully and the bezel closes, and only then changes the rest.

Do Hue GU10 spotlights need a Hue Bridge?

Not for a small room. Hue's Bluetooth control handles up to 10 lights per phone, but voice assistants need a Bridge, and this GU10's page lists Matter only through the Bridge. The Essential GU10 can also join Matter directly over Thread, through a border router such as an Apple HomePod mini, a Google Nest Hub (2nd gen) or an Amazon Echo (4th gen).

Can Hue GU10s go on a dimmer switch?

Not on an older wall dimmer. Hue's FAQ says 'Avoid using Hue bulbs on non-dimmable circuits controlled by mechanical dimmers' and that dimmers made for incandescent bulbs can make LEDs flicker, while the lamps dim themselves from the app or a Hue switch. The usual fix is to have a pro who does electrical work swap the dimmer for a plain switch, then add a Hue wall switch module behind it or a Hue remote beside it.

How much does Philips Hue GU10 Smart Spotlight installation cost in London?

It is a fixed price for your GU10 Smart Spotlight, worked out by a vetted pro from the model, a photo of where it is going and what power is there now, and shown in the JACK app before you book. Other devices can go on the same booking for one price. If you would rather pay for time, hourly hire for smart home is typically £45–£95 per hour as a guide.
