Philips Hue Downlight and Spotlight Installation in London
Updated
Hue's UK recessed spotlights all take a 70 mm hole, but in most London homes the hole is not the hard part: what sits above the ceiling is. A vetted JACK pro checks the floor overhead, the depth of the void and the downlights you already have, then fits Hue spotlights, or Hue lamps in the fittings that are there.
In short
Yes: in London a vetted JACK pro fits Philips Hue GU10 and MR16 lamps in the downlights you already have, and fits Hue's Centura, Milliskin, Xamento and Adore recessed spotlights, which all take a 70 mm cut-out, on an existing lighting circuit. Hue's UK pages state no fire rating for these spotlights, so under a ceiling with another flat above, JACK's own rule is no new holes: the pro keeps your fire-rated downlights and puts Hue GU10 lamps in them. Your fixed price is shown in the JACK app before anything is booked.
Send a photo of the ceiling, a close-up of one existing downlight with any marking on its rim, and say whether it is a house or a flat and what is above the room. For new spotlights, add the room size and how many you have in mind.

Philips Hue downlights and spotlights pros install
Each guide covers how the model is powered and mounted, what the pro does and what to send before booking.
GU10 Smart Spotlight installation
Hue's mains GU10 lamp, 57.8 mm long, swapped into the downlights already in your ceiling: no cutting or rewiring, which makes it JACK's way to put Hue into a flat's ceiling.
MR16 Smart Spotlight installation
Hue's 12 V spotlight on a GU5.3 two-pin base: the lamp swap is simple, and the real job is checking each transformer in the ceiling against Signify's tested list.
Which Hue recessed spotlights are sold in the UK?
Hue's UK recessed range comes down to four families, each with a GU10 lamp in the box:
- Centura: a 90 x 90 mm spot that Hue lists for living rooms and bedrooms, IP20 and double insulated, in several finishes
- Milliskin: Hue lists it for the same rooms, also IP20 and Class II, and like the Centura it needs 100 mm of depth above the ceiling
- Xamento: an IP44 spot Hue designs for bathrooms; the one we checked was temporarily out of stock on 1 November 2026, not withdrawn
- Adore bathroom recessed downlight: IP44, and listed by Hue as rated for damp locations
The Hue Slim recessed light that turns up in reviews is not on Hue's UK store, so this page sticks to the four families above.
Philips Hue GU10 smart spotlight installationCan you fit Hue downlights in a London flat?
Usually as Hue lamps in the downlights already there. The reason is the ceiling, not the light:
- Approved Document B treats every floor between flats as a compartment floor that must form a complete barrier to fire, and asks for every opening for services through it to be sealed so its fire resistance is not impaired
- Approved Document B's Table B2 asks for at least 30 minutes' fire resistance where the block's top floor is no more than 5 m above the ground and 60 minutes up to 18 m, rising to 90 and then 120 minutes in taller blocks; a converted building of up to three storeys may be accepted at 30 minutes
- Hue's UK product pages for the Centura, Milliskin, Xamento and Adore do not state a fire rating
- JACK's own rule, which goes further than the wording of the regulations: pros cut no new downlight holes in a ceiling with another flat above, and do not swap an existing fire-rated downlight there for a Hue spotlight
- What they do instead: fit Hue GU10 lamps into your existing fire-rated GU10 downlights after checking each one fits, which needs no ceiling work at all
Many leases restrict cutting into ceilings too, so a new lighting layout in a flat usually needs the freeholder's agreement as well.
Fire ratings, flats and Hue downlights: the full guideWhat decides new Hue spotlights in a house?
In a house the ceiling under an upper floor is not a compartment floor, so new holes are possible. The pro checks:
- Which floor it is: Approved Document B asks R 30 / EI 15 of the upper floor in a two-storey house (not over a garage or basement), REI 30 of floors in a three-storey house and of the new floor in a loft conversion, and 60 minutes in a house of four or more storeys, where each new hole's fire resistance has to be restored, for example with a tested fire hood
- Depth: the Centura and Milliskin need 100 mm of void, which a concrete soffit or shallow battens may not give
- Insulation: under a loft, the IET's guidance on recessed lights makes the case for a box or hood over each fitting, with room for its heat, rather than insulation laid on top
- Joists and cables: holes are set out between joists, and the new spots join the existing lighting circuit, an addition that is not notifiable outside a bathroom
- RCD protection: the wiring regulations ask for 30 mA RCD protection on new or significantly altered lighting circuits, so if yours has none the pro tells you before cutting in; adding it means consumer unit work outside this job
Once the new spotlights are in and tested, ask your pro for a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate for the lighting circuit.
GU10 or MR16: what is in your ceiling now?
Look at the lamp pins, or send a photo, before buying a box of Hue spots:
- GU10: two stubby pins and a twist to lock, at mains voltage. Hue gives its GU10 spotlight as 50 mm across and 57.8 mm long, so the pro checks it fits the depth of each existing fitting
- MR16, also called GU5.3: two thin pins on a 12 V supply, with a transformer above each fitting or group of fittings
- Signify publishes a list rating transformers for Hue MR16 lamps as recommended, tested, not compatible, not recommended because of overload, or not tested
- Its footnote limits the load on a halogen transformer to 20% of its halogen rating unless the transformer's maker says otherwise, so a transformer that ran several halogen lamps may take far fewer Hue lamps
Hue's UK recessed spotlights compared
From each Hue UK product page, checked on 1 November 2026. The last row is the lamp on its own, for downlights you already have.
| Hue product | Cut-out | IP rating | Electrical class | Lamp | Rooms Hue lists |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Centura recessed spotlight | 70 mm | IP20 | Class II | GU10, included | Living room, bedroom |
| Milliskin recessed spotlight | 70 mm | IP20 | Class II | GU10, included | Living room, bedroom |
| Xamento recessed spotlight | 70 mm | IP44 | Class II | GU10, included | Bathroom |
| Adore bathroom recessed downlight | 70 mm | IP44 | Class II | GU10, included | Bathroom; rated for damp locations |
| GU10 smart spotlight (lamp only) | None: goes in your existing downlight | IP20 | Takes the fitting's | 50 x 57.8 mm, 220–240 V | Wherever the existing fitting suits |
None of these pages states a fire rating either way, so where a ceiling must resist fire, the fire-rated fitting already in it is what counts.
How is Philips Hue installation priced in London?
A vetted pro prices your Hue job from the products and your photos, and the JACK app shows that fixed price before you book.
Whether the job touches your wiring matters more than how many lights there are. Fitting B22 or GU10 bulbs, setting up a Bridge and plugging in lamps, Play bars or a lightstrip is set-up work. Ceiling lights, Perifo track, wall switch modules and mains outdoor lights are electrical work on your existing circuits, priced for the isolating, connecting and testing each one needs.
Then the home itself: a heavy fitting that has to go into a joist, a high or sloping ceiling, a two-way landing that needs a module at both switches, old cable with no earth, or a long garden run for low-volt lights. On a high ceiling or a long fitting, your pro can ask another pro on JACK to help through the Pro2Pro feature. Several Hue jobs, and devices from other brands, go on one booking for one fixed price.
You buy the Hue products; JACK does not sell them. Accessories the job needs, such as a deeper back box, an in-use cover for an outdoor socket or aluminium channel for a strip, are agreed and added at cost before you book, and so is parking where it has to be paid for. Prefer to pay for time? As a guide, hourly hire is typically £45–£95 per hour for smart home work and £55–£110 per hour for electrical work, and a full-day handyman booking is a flat £350–£400 for up to 8 hours on site, which suits a whole-house Hue fit.
How it works
Step 1
List the products and add photos
Name the Hue products you have, or paste the order, and photograph where each goes: the existing light and ceiling, the switch that runs it, the outside wall for garden lights, and your router.
Step 2
Accept one fixed price, then book a day
A vetted pro prices the whole list from your photos, and any part the job needs is agreed at cost up front. Only once you accept that price do you book, picking a day that suits you, with evenings and weekends where pros offer them.
Step 3
Fitted, connected and handed over
Power isolated before any light or switch is touched, each item fixed, connected and tested, then added to your Bridge with rooms and scenes set up with you.
Frequently asked questions
Can a Hue spotlight replace a fire-rated downlight?
Not in a ceiling with another flat above, which is a compartment floor that must resist fire. Hue's UK product pages for the Centura, Milliskin, Xamento and Adore do not state a fire rating either way, so JACK's own rule is that pros leave the fire-rated downlight in place there and fit a Hue GU10 lamp in it instead. In a house, the pro checks which floor is above before suggesting a swap.
Will Hue GU10 bulbs fit my fire-rated downlights?
Usually, but check first. Hue gives its GU10 spotlight as 57.8 mm long and 50 mm wide, and some fire-rated downlights hold the lamp in a shallow cup. Send the downlight's make and model, or a photo with the lamp out, and the pro checks before you buy.
Can I put Hue spotlights in my bathroom?
Hue makes the Xamento and Adore for bathrooms, both IP44. JACK does not book fixed electrical work inside a bathroom's zones, so fitting them there is a job for a registered electrician. Swapping a lamp in an existing bathroom downlight that suits a Hue GU10 is a lamp change, not wiring.
My downlights are 12 V. Can I still use Hue?
Yes, with Hue's MR16 lamps, if the transformer suits them. Signify publishes a compatibility list for this, and an unsuitable transformer is swapped for one the list recommends, which is a replacement on the same circuit and not notifiable. Inside a bathroom's zones, JACK books the lamp change only.
How many Hue spotlights can I run without a Bridge?
Up to 10 in one room, from your phone over Bluetooth. A kitchen or open-plan room often has more than that, and a Bridge also lets one remote or wall switch module run every spotlight together.
How much does Hue downlight installation cost in London?
It is a fixed price for your ceiling, worked out from the products and your photos and shown in the JACK app before you book. Hue lamps in existing downlights take far less time than cutting in new spotlights. If you would rather pay by the hour, electrical work is typically £55–£110 per hour as a guide.
