Philips Hue Outdoor Wall Light Installation in London
Updated
A mains Hue outdoor light is electrical work on your outside-light circuit, and it only behaves like Hue if that circuit stays live. A vetted JACK pro who does electrical work looks at the earth, the switching and the Hue signal in your photos, tests them at the wall, then fits the light you bought.
In short
Yes: a JACK pro in London who does electrical work can replace an existing outside light with a mains Philips Hue fitting on the same circuit, which is not notifiable under Part P in England. It needs a working earth for Class I models such as Econic, Muscari and Struana, a supply that stays on so the light stays reachable, and, for most models, a Hue Bridge whose signal reaches that wall. The fixed price is shown in the JACK app before you book.
Send photos of the old light, close up and from the garden, of the switch or sensor that turns it on and of your fuse board with its labels showing, plus the Hue model name and how high the light sits.

Which Hue outdoor lights are wired to the mains?
Hue sells two outdoor systems in the UK, and this page covers the one connected to your home's 230 V supply. On Hue's UK store that includes:
- Econic wall lights, and the hardwired Impress, which Hue says needs only two hands to install; Hue's UK store also lists a separate low-volt Impress
- Semeru and Scenova, rectangular wall lights that list Bluetooth as well as Zigbee; Semeru also goes on a ceiling
- Muscari and Struana wall spotlights, where Muscari's light source can be replaced
- The Welcome floodlight, which showed 'Only a few left' on Hue's UK page on 1 November 2026
- Dymera, a Class I wall light rated IP44 that Hue says is made for use indoors or outside
Hue's low-volt garden range (Lily, Calla and the low-volt Impress among them) runs from a plug-in power supply instead, and the Secure floodlight camera, another mains fitting, has its own page.
Hue low-volt or mains outdoor lights: what does each need?Does a Hue outdoor light need building control or a registered electrician?
Usually neither. In England, regulation 12(6A) of the Building Regulations 2010 makes home electrical work notifiable in three cases only: a new circuit, a replacement consumer unit, and additions or alterations in a special location, meaning the space around a bath or shower or a room with a swimming pool or sauna heater.
- Approved Document P (2013) lists replacements anywhere, and additions or alterations to existing installations outside special locations, as not notifiable
- The IET's Part P questions and answers say a light fitted outside is not notifiable as long as it connects to an existing circuit
- Not notifiable does not mean unchecked: Approved Document P expects the work to be inspected, tested and certificated to BS 7671, so ask your pro for a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate
Hue's generic safety leaflet says some regulations require a licensed electrician, citing Part P for the UK, but England has no electrician licence: the Building Regulations set which jobs must be notified, not who may do them. A brand-new circuit is notifiable, and JACK does not book it.
Do you need an electrician to install Philips Hue?What does the pro check before the old light comes down?
Each point is read from your photos first and then tested at the wall:
- An earth at the fitting: lighting circuits installed before 1966 often have none, and a Class I light needs one, so the pro confirms it before you settle on a model
- RCD protection: new or significantly altered lighting circuits need a 30 mA RCD; if a circuit without one only has its fitting changed, the pro tells you, since an upgrade at the fuse board is not booked as part of this job
- The fixing: render and brick take masonry fixings, and the cable entry behind the light is sealed against rain
- Access: a first-floor wall may need a tower, or your pro can ask another pro on JACK to help through the Pro2Pro feature
- Consent: a flat's outside walls usually belong to the freeholder, and works that affect a listed building's character need listed building consent
Why must a Hue outdoor light keep its power on?
A Hue light answers the app, sensors and schedules only while it has power, which is why Hue sells wall switch modules: they keep lights reachable when someone presses the switch.
- Leave the indoor switch on and run the light from the app, a schedule or a battery remote
- Fit Hue's battery wall switch module behind that switch: it needs a Hue Bridge but no neutral, and the light becomes permanently live, so the breaker goes off before anyone works on it
- Swap an old PIR, photocell or timer for Hue's outdoor motion sensor, which runs on two AA batteries, is rated IP54 and detects movement up to 10 m away
- Keep dimmers off the circuit: Hue's safety leaflet says its fittings should not be connected to an additional dimmer
Will the Hue signal reach the front of the house?
Hue lights talk to the Bridge over Zigbee, and Hue says each light repeats the signal. Solid brick and a Bridge at the back of a terrace can leave a front-wall light out of reach, and the usual fix is a mains-powered Hue light in between, such as a Hue bulb in the hall or porch. The light is tested from the app at the wall before the visit ends.
Philips Hue with Google Home, Alexa, Apple Home and MatterLight aimed at the neighbours can be a statutory nuisance
Under section 79 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, artificial light from premises that is prejudicial to health or a nuisance is a statutory nuisance, and private homes are not exempt. Heads are angled down onto your path or planting, and brightness and scenes are set with you.
Hue mains outdoor lights compared: earth, rating and control
From each light's Philips Hue UK product page, read on 1 November 2026. The class decides whether the old light's circuit must have an earth.
| Hue light | Supply and class | Rating | How it connects | Earth needed? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Econic wall light | 220–240 V, Class I | IP44 | Hue Bridge required | Yes |
| Impress wall light (hardwired) | 220–240 V, Class II | IP44 | Hue Bridge required | No |
| Semeru wall light | 220–240 V, Class II | IP44; power supply unit IP20 | Bluetooth and Zigbee; Matter via a Bridge or a Thread border router | No |
| Scenova wall light | 220–240 V, Class II | IP44; power supply unit IP20 | Bluetooth and Zigbee; Matter via a Bridge or a Thread border router | No |
| Muscari wall spotlight | 220–240 V, Class I | IP44 | Bluetooth and Zigbee; Matter listed as not applicable | Yes |
| Struana wall spotlight | 220–240 V, Class I | IP44 | Bluetooth and Zigbee; Matter listed as not applicable | Yes |
| Welcome floodlight | Mains, Class I; 2,600 lm | IP44 | Hue Bridge required; no manual listed | Yes |
Hue's UK pages for Semeru, Scenova, Muscari and Struana carry no 'Bridge required' line and say they work without Wi-Fi. For any other Hue mains outdoor family, check the protection class on your model's UK page.
How is Philips Hue installation priced in London?
A vetted pro prices your Hue job from the products and your photos, and the JACK app shows that fixed price before you book.
Whether the job touches your wiring matters more than how many lights there are. Fitting B22 or GU10 bulbs, setting up a Bridge and plugging in lamps, Play bars or a lightstrip is set-up work. Ceiling lights, Perifo track, wall switch modules and mains outdoor lights are electrical work on your existing circuits, priced for the isolating, connecting and testing each one needs.
Then the home itself: a heavy fitting that has to go into a joist, a high or sloping ceiling, a two-way landing that needs a module at both switches, old cable with no earth, or a long garden run for low-volt lights. On a high ceiling or a long fitting, your pro can ask another pro on JACK to help through the Pro2Pro feature. Several Hue jobs, and devices from other brands, go on one booking for one fixed price.
You buy the Hue products; JACK does not sell them. Accessories the job needs, such as a deeper back box, an in-use cover for an outdoor socket or aluminium channel for a strip, are agreed and added at cost before you book, and so is parking where it has to be paid for. Prefer to pay for time? As a guide, hourly hire is typically £45–£95 per hour for smart home work and £55–£110 per hour for electrical work, and a full-day handyman booking is a flat £350–£400 for up to 8 hours on site, which suits a whole-house Hue fit.
How it works
Step 1
List the products and add photos
Name the Hue products you have, or paste the order, and photograph where each goes: the existing light and ceiling, the switch that runs it, the outside wall for garden lights, and your router.
Step 2
Accept one fixed price, then book a day
A vetted pro prices the whole list from your photos, and any part the job needs is agreed at cost up front. Only once you accept that price do you book, picking a day that suits you, with evenings and weekends where pros offer them.
Step 3
Fitted, connected and handed over
Power isolated before any light or switch is touched, each item fixed, connected and tested, then added to your Bridge with rooms and scenes set up with you.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an electrician to fit a Philips Hue outdoor wall light?
Not a registered one if it replaces an existing outside light on the same circuit: that is not notifiable in England, and a competent pro who does electrical work can fit it. A new circuit to a wall with no supply is notifiable, so it goes to a registered electrician, and JACK does not book that part.
Can a Hue outdoor light go where there is no light now?
Yes, if an existing circuit reaches it: GOV.UK lists extra lighting points on existing circuits, away from baths and showers, as not notifiable. If only a new circuit would do, a registered electrician runs it first and a JACK pro fits the light afterwards.
How is the Philips Hue outdoor motion sensor installed?
With no wiring: it runs on two AA batteries, which Hue gives a minimum life of two years, and Hue's UK page lists it for wall mounting. It is placed within reach of your Hue Bridge or a Hue light and aimed along your path rather than at the pavement.
Can you fit a Hue light on the front of a flat or a listed house?
Often, once permission is in writing: from the freeholder for a flat's outside wall, and listed building consent where the work affects a listed building's character. After that, the job is booked like any other.
How much does Hue outdoor light installation cost in London?
A fixed price for your light and wall, set from your photos and shown in the JACK app before you book; height, the earth and any switch module decide it. As a guide, electrical work hired by the hour is typically £55–£110 per hour, and any parts are added at cost, agreed before you book.
