Do You Need an Electrician to Install Philips Hue?

Updated

Hue's manuals and leaflets mention 'electrically skilled persons', qualified electricians and even a 'licensed electrician', which leaves many Hue owners unsure who to call. In England the answer comes from Part P of the Building Regulations, and for most Hue jobs it is not a registered electrician. This guide sorts each kind of Hue work by what the law asks of it.

In short

Most Philips Hue jobs in England do not need a registered electrician: smart bulbs, the Bridge and plug-in lamps involve no electrical installation work, and wall switch modules, fittings swapped on the same wiring and mains outdoor lights on an existing circuit are not notifiable under Part P, so a JACK pro in London can fit them. Wherever the mains is touched, ask your pro for a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate. A new circuit or a new consumer unit is notifiable and goes to a registered electrician, as does any fixed work inside a bath or shower zone, and JACK books none of that work.

What do Hue's own instructions say about electricians?

Signify, which makes Hue, writes one set of instructions for many countries, so the tone varies by document. These are Hue's words, not UK rules:

  • The wall switch module manual: 'Electrical devices may only be installed and connected by electrically skilled persons', and consult an electrician when in doubt
  • Hue's UK support article on in-wall modules: they 'should only be installed and connected by electrically skilled people', and local rules may forbid doing it yourself
  • The safety leaflet packed with Hue fittings: 'If in doubt, consult a qualified or licensed electrician'
  • The same leaflet names Part P as an example of a rule that needs a licensed electrician

That last line does not describe England. England has no licence for electricians, and Part P decides which work building control must be told about, not who may do it; the Planning Portal says the rules do not restrict who carries out electrical work. The useful part of Hue's wording is 'electrically skilled': mains work needs someone competent.

Most Hue kit needs no electrical work at all

These jobs change nothing in your home's fixed wiring, so Part P has nothing to say about them:

  • Hue bulbs into lampholders you already have: B22 bayonet, E27, E14 or GU10
  • The Hue Bridge on its plug-in adapter, connected to your router by an Ethernet cable
  • Plug-in lamps, lightstrips, Play light bars, the Play HDMI Sync Box and the Secure smart chime
  • Battery remotes and sensors, such as the Dimmer Switch, Tap dial switch, Smart button and motion sensors

The fitting still has to suit the bulb. Hue GU10s can be longer than some fire-rated downlights allow, so the pro checks the fit before you buy a set.

Which Hue electrical work is notifiable in England?

Regulation 12(6A) of the Building Regulations 2010 names only three kinds of home electrical work that building control must be told about:

  • A new circuit from the consumer unit, for example a dedicated supply for garden lighting
  • Fitting a new consumer unit, or replacing the old one
  • Additions or alterations in a special location: the space around a bath or shower up to 2.25 m high and 0.6 m out from the bath or tray edge, or a room with a swimming pool or sauna heater

Approved Document P (2013), paragraph 2.7, says everything else is not notifiable, including additions and alterations outside special locations and replacements anywhere. That does not make it unregulated: the work must be safe, and paragraph 3.13 expects it to be inspected, tested and certificated to BS 7671.

Which Hue jobs does JACK leave to a registered electrician?

These need a registered electrician, and JACK does not book them as part of a Hue job:

  • A new circuit, such as a supply from the consumer unit to garden lights, a shed or a garden room
  • Any work on the consumer unit itself, whether a new one or a replacement
  • Any new, moved or replaced light, switch or module inside a bath or shower zone. The law treats a like-for-like replacement there as not notifiable, but JACK books no fixed electrical work in the zones
  • Notifiable work in a residential building of 18 m or 7 storeys and up, which also needs Building Safety Regulator approval unless it is done under a competent person scheme

The usual routes are to hire an electrician registered with a competent person scheme on the GOV.UK list, or to tell building control yourself before the work begins; England also has registered third-party certifiers. When the new circuit is in, a JACK pro can come back to fit and set up the Hue lights on it.

What should you send so a pro can price the Hue wiring?

JACK pros are vetted, insured pros appear first, and bookings are for London addresses only. For wired Hue work, send:

  • A photo of each switch and light the job involves, and the names of the Hue products you have bought
  • The consumer unit with its cover closed, so the breaker labels and any RCD show
  • Whether a switch is one of two or three controlling the same light, as on stairs and landings
  • For a flat or a rented home, written consent from the freeholder or landlord; landlords should also get a copy of any electrical certificate

Ask your pro for a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate for any job that alters a circuit. You buy the Hue products, since JACK does not sell devices; a back box, connector or fused spur the job needs is agreed at cost before you book.

Which Philips Hue jobs need a registered electrician?

For homes in England. 'Notifiable' means building control has to be told about the work, which a registered electrician's scheme does for them, or you do before work begins.

How is Philips Hue installation priced in London?

A vetted pro prices your Hue job from the products and your photos, and the JACK app shows that fixed price before you book.

Whether the job touches your wiring matters more than how many lights there are. Fitting B22 or GU10 bulbs, setting up a Bridge and plugging in lamps, Play bars or a lightstrip is set-up work. Ceiling lights, Perifo track, wall switch modules and mains outdoor lights are electrical work on your existing circuits, priced for the isolating, connecting and testing each one needs.

Then the home itself: a heavy fitting that has to go into a joist, a high or sloping ceiling, a two-way landing that needs a module at both switches, old cable with no earth, or a long garden run for low-volt lights. On a high ceiling or a long fitting, your pro can ask another pro on JACK to help through the Pro2Pro feature. Several Hue jobs, and devices from other brands, go on one booking for one fixed price.

You buy the Hue products; JACK does not sell them. Accessories the job needs, such as a deeper back box, an in-use cover for an outdoor socket or aluminium channel for a strip, are agreed and added at cost before you book, and so is parking where it has to be paid for. Prefer to pay for time? As a guide, hourly hire is typically £45–£95 per hour for smart home work and £55–£110 per hour for electrical work, and a full-day handyman booking is a flat £350–£400 for up to 8 hours on site, which suits a whole-house Hue fit.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an electrician to install Philips Hue?

Not for most of it. Bulbs, the Bridge, plug-in lamps and battery remotes involve no wiring, and wall switch modules or Hue fittings on your existing circuits are not notifiable in England, so a competent pro can fit them. Only a new circuit, consumer unit work, or an addition or alteration inside a bath or shower zone is notifiable and goes to a registered electrician.

Can a handyman fit a Philips Hue wall switch module?

Yes, if they are competent to work on mains wiring. In England, fitting a module behind an existing switch outside a bathroom is an alteration to an existing circuit and is not notifiable. Hue itself asks for 'electrically skilled' people, so it is a job for a pro who does electrical work.

Do I need a qualified electrician to change a light switch?

No. In England, replacing a light switch is not notifiable anywhere in the home, so the law does not reserve it for a registered electrician. Whoever does it must be competent, and the work must meet BS 7671, the wiring regulations. JACK still books no fixed electrical work inside a bath or shower zone.

Does Hue's 'licensed electrician' warning apply in the UK?

Not as written. The line comes from Signify's multi-country safety leaflet. England has no electrician's licence, and Part P controls which jobs must be notified to building control, not who may do them.

What certificate should I get after Hue lights are wired in?

For an addition or alteration to one existing circuit, the right form is a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate, so ask your pro for one. A new circuit is a registered electrician's job and comes with an Electrical Installation Certificate instead.
