Which Philips Hue Switch Works With UK Wiring? No Neutral, 2-Way and Intermediate

Updated

Hue now sells four ways to put a smart switch where your old one is, and they differ on the one thing most British switch boxes lack: a neutral wire. Add stairs and landings switched from two or three places, and the right choice depends on what is behind each plate. Here is how a pro works it out.

In short

If your switch box has no neutral wire, as most UK ones do not, Hue's options are the battery wall switch module, which needs none, or Hue's wired dimmer switch for non-smart lights, which works with or without one; the wired wall switch module and the wired on/off switch both need a neutral, though the wired module can go in the ceiling above the light instead. On two-way and intermediate circuits, every switch that controls the light needs its own Hue battery module. A JACK pro in London opens the box, identifies the wiring and fits the option that suits it, and outside a bathroom zone none of this is notifiable.

Why do most UK switch boxes have no neutral?

British lighting is usually wired 'loop-in' at the ceiling:

  • The supply, the neutral and the earth meet at the ceiling rose or a junction box near the light
  • The cable down to the switch carries a permanent live and brings back a switched live, so the switch box has no neutral
  • Some newer or rewired homes do bring a neutral to the switch, so the box is worth checking rather than assuming

Hue's support article lists which of its in-wall products need that neutral: the wired wall switch module and the wired on/off switch do, the battery module does not, and the wired dimmer works either way.

How does a pro choose between Hue's switch options?

The questions run in this order:

  • Keeping your current bulbs? Then it is one of Hue's wired switches for non-smart lights. With Hue bulbs, it is a wall switch module
  • Is there a neutral in the switch box? If not, the battery module, or the wired dimmer for non-smart lights
  • Is there a neutral at the ceiling rose? Hue lets its wired wall switch module go in the ceiling above the light instead of behind the switch
  • Is the switch a dimmer now? It comes out first, because the battery module will not work with a dimmer
  • Is the plate a combined switch and socket? Hue's battery module is not compatible with one

Battery remotes such as the Dimmer Switch and Tap dial switch avoid the wiring altogether, but the old switch then has to stay on.

Two-way and intermediate switching need a module at every switch

Stairs, landings and long hallways often switch one light from two or three places. Hue's manual and support article describe how its battery module copes:

  • Two-way: one module behind each of the two switches. In each box the common and the two strapper wires are joined in Hue's connector, and each module is set up as a single rocker
  • Intermediate, with three switches: three modules, plus an extra connector for the middle box that Hue does not supply
  • Hue says two-way and three-way set-ups work only if the other switches are also connected to modules
  • The pro traces which wire is the common and which are strappers before anything is disconnected

So a landing light switched from three places takes three modules, not one, and the price reflects that.

What changes once a battery module is behind the switch?

The module works by joining the old switch wires together, so:

  • The light stays connected to the mains, and the switch on the wall sends a radio command instead of breaking the circuit
  • Hue's manual warns that a lamp switched off this way is still supplied with mains voltage, so the circuit breaker goes off before a bulb is changed
  • The module's own short wires go into the switch terminals; Hue's manual says never to connect the original live wires to the module
  • The pro labels the switch so the next person to work on it knows the light is permanently live

Box depth matters too. Hue only says to make sure there is enough room in the box, so the pro checks the depth first, and a deeper back box may be needed. A metal plate on a lighting circuit with no earth wire is swapped for a plastic one, or an earth is run to it.

Where can a neutral come from if the switch has none?

If you want the wired module or a wired switch for non-smart lights and the box has no neutral:

  • Put Hue's wired wall switch module in the ceiling above the light, where loop-in wiring normally has a neutral
  • Run a new cable from the ceiling rose down to the switch. That is an alteration to an existing circuit and not notifiable in England, but it means chasing the wall and making good
  • Or choose the battery module, which sidesteps the question

None of this is notifiable outside a bath or shower zone. JACK books no fixed electrical work inside a zone, so a pull-cord switch there goes to a registered electrician. Ask your pro for a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate once the switch work is finished.

What should you send for a Hue switch price?

Pros on JACK work in London only, and the fixed price depends on what is in each box. Send:

  • A photo of every switch plate involved, and say which ones work the same light
  • The light fitting or ceiling rose each switch controls
  • The Hue products you have, or plan to buy
  • Whether the plates are metal or plastic

Any back box, connector or switch the job needs is agreed at cost before you book. JACK does not sell Hue modules.

Which Hue in-wall option needs a neutral?

How is Philips Hue installation priced in London?

A vetted pro prices your Hue job from the products and your photos, and the JACK app shows that fixed price before you book.

Whether the job touches your wiring matters more than how many lights there are. Fitting B22 or GU10 bulbs, setting up a Bridge and plugging in lamps, Play bars or a lightstrip is set-up work. Ceiling lights, Perifo track, wall switch modules and mains outdoor lights are electrical work on your existing circuits, priced for the isolating, connecting and testing each one needs.

Then the home itself: a heavy fitting that has to go into a joist, a high or sloping ceiling, a two-way landing that needs a module at both switches, old cable with no earth, or a long garden run for low-volt lights. On a high ceiling or a long fitting, your pro can ask another pro on JACK to help through the Pro2Pro feature. Several Hue jobs, and devices from other brands, go on one booking for one fixed price.

You buy the Hue products; JACK does not sell them. Accessories the job needs, such as a deeper back box, an in-use cover for an outdoor socket or aluminium channel for a strip, are agreed and added at cost before you book, and so is parking where it has to be paid for. Prefer to pay for time? As a guide, hourly hire is typically £45–£95 per hour for smart home work and £55–£110 per hour for electrical work, and a full-day handyman booking is a flat £350–£400 for up to 8 hours on site, which suits a whole-house Hue fit.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Philips Hue wall switch module need a neutral?

The battery version does not: it runs on a CR2450 coin cell and sits behind your existing switch. Hue's wired wall switch module does need a neutral, either in the switch box or at the ceiling above the light.

Can I use a Hue wall switch module on a 2-way switch?

Yes, but every switch that controls the light needs its own module. Hue says two-way and three-way set-ups work only when the other switches are also connected to modules, and an intermediate circuit takes three modules and an extra connector.

What Hue switch works with no neutral?

The battery wall switch module, for Hue bulbs, or Hue's wired dimmer switch for non-smart lights, which works without a neutral. Hue's wired wall switch module can also go at the ceiling, where a neutral is usually present.

Will a Hue wall switch module fit in a UK back box?

Often, but it depends on the box. Hue gives the battery module as 43 × 38 × 10 mm and only asks for enough room behind the switch, so the pro checks the box depth first; a deeper box may be needed.

Can the Hue wall switch module control lights that are not Hue?

No. Hue's page says the battery module works with all Hue lights, and its manual says it is only compatible with Hue light sources. For ordinary bulbs, Hue's wired on/off and wired dimmer switches for non-smart lights are the ones to look at.
