Why Is My Philips Hue Light Unreachable, and Can I Keep My Dimmer Switch?

Updated

A Hue bulb is a small radio as well as a light, and it only answers the app while it has power. Often an 'unreachable' Hue light has simply been switched off at the wall, and a flickering one sits behind a dimmer made for old filament bulbs. This guide explains why each happens and which fix suits your household.

In short

A Hue light shows as unreachable when the app cannot talk to it, and the usual cause is a wall switch that has cut its power; it reconnects when the switch goes back on. Old wall dimmers are the other common problem: Hue says dimmers designed for incandescent bulbs can make LEDs flicker, and its bulbs dim themselves from the app, so they need no dimmer on the wall. A JACK pro in London can set what your lights do when power returns, swap the dimmer for a plain or push switch, and fit a Hue wall switch module so the switch works without cutting the power.

Why does a Hue light go unreachable?

It has dropped off the Hue network. The causes a pro checks, starting with the most likely:

  • The wall switch is off. With no power the bulb's radio is off too, and it reappears once the switch is back on
  • It is too far from the rest of the network. Hue says each light repeats the signal, so Hue's answer to a distant light is another Hue light part of the way there
  • The Bridge has lost its router connection. Hue says the standard Bridge does not join Wi-Fi and has to be wired to the router
  • Radio clutter on 2.4 GHz, a band Hue's Zigbee network shares with Wi-Fi; the Hue app has a setting to move the Bridge to another Zigbee channel

In a long terrace with solid walls, a mains-powered Hue light by the back or front door can carry the signal on to garden and porch lights.

What happens when the power comes back?

With a Bridge, each light has a power-on behaviour setting in the Hue app. It decides what the light does when power returns after a cut or a flick of the switch:

  • Come back as it was before, with the same colour and brightness
  • Come on at a colour you have chosen
  • Follow Hue's default

This does not stop the switch cutting the power. It only makes the light come back the way you want, so a pro sets it up and pairs it with one of the fixes further down.

Can you keep a dimmer switch with Hue bulbs?

Not a traditional one. Hue's own guidance points away from it:

  • Hue's FAQ says older dimmers designed for incandescent bulbs can cause flickering with LEDs, and tells owners to 'avoid using Hue bulbs on non-dimmable circuits controlled by mechanical dimmers'
  • Hue bulbs dim themselves from the app or a Hue remote, so they need no dimmer on the wall
  • The safety leaflet with Hue fittings says not to connect them to an additional dimmer
  • Hue's battery wall switch module is not compatible with switches that have a built-in dimmer

The fix is to swap the dimmer for a plain rocker or a retractive push switch, usually with a Hue module behind it. That is a replacement on an existing circuit, so in England it is not notifiable, but it is still mains work for a competent pro. To keep ordinary bulbs and dim them from the app instead, Hue sells a wired dimmer switch for non-smart lights.

Three fixes stop the wall switch cutting Hue off

Which one suits depends on who uses the switch and what is behind it:

  • Leave the switch on and add a Hue remote, such as the Dimmer Switch or Tap dial switch. No wiring, but guests will still reach for the old switch
  • A Hue battery wall switch module behind the existing switch. The switch then sends a command instead of cutting the power, and no neutral wire is needed
  • A Hue wired wall switch module, where a neutral is available behind the switch or in the ceiling above the light

Neutral wires, two-way landings and intermediate switches each change which module fits, and the switch-options guide goes through them.

What should you send to get it fixed?

Pros on JACK work across London only. A fixed price comes from photos, so send:

  • Each switch that controls a Hue light, and whether any of them is a dimmer
  • How many switches control each light: one, or two or three on stairs and landings
  • Where the Bridge sits and how it connects to the router
  • Which lights drop out, and whether it happens when someone uses the switch or at random

JACK does not sell Hue products. A module, push switch or back box the job needs is agreed at cost before you book.

How is Philips Hue installation priced in London?

A vetted pro prices your Hue job from the products and your photos, and the JACK app shows that fixed price before you book.

Whether the job touches your wiring matters more than how many lights there are. Fitting B22 or GU10 bulbs, setting up a Bridge and plugging in lamps, Play bars or a lightstrip is set-up work. Ceiling lights, Perifo track, wall switch modules and mains outdoor lights are electrical work on your existing circuits, priced for the isolating, connecting and testing each one needs.

Then the home itself: a heavy fitting that has to go into a joist, a high or sloping ceiling, a two-way landing that needs a module at both switches, old cable with no earth, or a long garden run for low-volt lights. On a high ceiling or a long fitting, your pro can ask another pro on JACK to help through the Pro2Pro feature. Several Hue jobs, and devices from other brands, go on one booking for one fixed price.

You buy the Hue products; JACK does not sell them. Accessories the job needs, such as a deeper back box, an in-use cover for an outdoor socket or aluminium channel for a strip, are agreed and added at cost before you book, and so is parking where it has to be paid for. Prefer to pay for time? As a guide, hourly hire is typically £45–£95 per hour for smart home work and £55–£110 per hour for electrical work, and a full-day handyman booking is a flat £350–£400 for up to 8 hours on site, which suits a whole-house Hue fit.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Philips Hue light say unreachable?

Usually because it has no power: someone has turned it off at the wall switch. Turn the switch back on and it reconnects. If it still shows unreachable with the switch on, it may be too far from other Hue lights, or the Bridge may have lost its cable connection to the router.

Can I use Philips Hue bulbs with a dimmer switch?

Not with a traditional wall dimmer. Hue says older dimmers designed for incandescent bulbs can make LEDs flicker, and Hue bulbs dim themselves from the app or a Hue remote. The dimmer is replaced with a plain or push switch, ideally with a Hue wall switch module behind it.

What do Hue lights do after a power cut?

With a Hue Bridge, you choose. The power-on behaviour setting in the Hue app lets each light come back as it was before the cut, or at a colour you pick.

Is it a problem to turn Hue lights off at the wall?

The light drops out of the app, your automations and voice control until the switch goes back on. A Hue wall switch module lets the existing switch control the light without cutting its power, so everything keeps working.

Does the Hue wall switch module work with a dimmer?

No. Hue says its battery wall switch module does not work with switches that have a built-in dimmer, so the dimmer is replaced with an ordinary rocker or push switch first.
