Philips Hue With Google Home, Alexa and Matter: Do You Need a Bridge?
Updated
Hue can join your voice assistant in three different ways, and the one you pick decides which lights can join, which features you keep and what has to be set up again later. This guide sets out the routes from Hue's and Google's own pages, and where a pro saves you the trial and error.
In short
With a Hue Bridge, Hue lights work with Google Home, Alexa and Apple Home, and Hue says every Bridge-connected product works with Matter except the Play HDMI Sync Box and the dial on the Tap dial switch. Without a Bridge, only Hue lights carrying the Matter logo can join a Matter system directly, over Thread, through a Thread border router such as a Nest Hub (2nd gen); lights on Bluetooth alone cannot use Matter, and Hue's UK bulb pages list voice assistants as 'Hue Bridge required'. A JACK pro in London can set up either route and link your lights to the app you use.

Why is a Hue Bridge still the simplest route?
Hue builds its whole range around the Bridge:
- Every Hue light, switch and sensor can join it, and Hue's Matter page says all products connected through a Bridge work with Matter, with two exceptions
- Hue's UK bulb pages list voice assistants as 'Hue Bridge required'
- Hue describes the Bridge route as the one that gives full features across all Hue products
- The Bridge Pro comes with an Ethernet cable, and Hue recommends wiring it to the router for the most reliable connection
Once the Bridge is linked to Google Home, Alexa or Apple Home, the lights on it can be controlled from there by voice and in routines.
Which Hue lights can skip the Bridge?
Only lights built for Matter over Thread, and Hue's pages differ by model:
- Hue says direct Matter works only for lights with the Matter logo
- A light already on a Hue Bridge has to be removed from it before it can be paired this way
- Check each bulb's page: the UK page for the Essential A60 B22, for example, lists Matter 'via Hue Bridge or third-party hubs (thread border routers)'
- Anything added over Bluetooth alone cannot be used with Matter, and Bluetooth control stops at 10 lights in one room
Some Hue accessories, such as the Tap dial switch, need a Bridge whatever the lights do, so a Bridge-free set-up suits a few lights rather than a whole house.
Which Google devices can be the Thread border router?
Google's Help pages list which of its devices handle Matter over Thread as well as over Wi-Fi:
- Can bring a Matter-logo Hue bulb in over Thread: the Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi Pro, Google Home Speaker and Google TV Streamer
- Cannot, because Google lists them for Matter over Wi-Fi alone: Nest Audio, Nest Mini, the first Nest Hub and the original Google Home and Home Mini
- On Google's UK store on 1 November 2026, the Nest Hub (2nd gen) and Nest Hub Max showed as out of stock, while the Nest Wifi Pro could be bought
- Hue's own Matter guide also names Apple's HomePod mini and the Amazon Echo (4th Gen) as example border routers, for Apple Home and Alexa
A pro sets the hub up in the Google Home app first, then adds the Hue lights, or the Hue Bridge, to it.
Nest Wifi, Nest Hub and Google Home Speaker set-upMoving to the Bridge Pro means linking your assistants again
Hue's upgrade from a Bridge to the Bridge Pro is one-way and, in Hue's words, 'cannot be undone'. For your assistants, Hue's guide says:
- Apple Home has to be set up again
- Alexa and Google Home have to be reconnected
- Older Living Colors and Living Whites lights are not supported and do not move across
Hue's Bridge Pro page lists Bluetooth and Zigbee and does not list Thread, so plan on Google, Amazon or Apple hardware if you want a Thread network.
What should you tell the pro?
JACK takes bookings in London only. To set up Hue with your assistant, the pro needs to know:
- Which app runs your home: Google Home, Alexa or Apple Home, or more than one
- Your Hue bulbs' model names, from the box or the Hue app, so the pro knows which can use Matter
- Which smart speakers, displays or Wi-Fi points you already have
- Whether you have a Hue Bridge or Bridge Pro, and where your router is
Set-up with no wiring books under smart home. A Bridge or hub you still need is yours to buy, since JACK does not sell devices.
Book Hue Bridge and set-up helpBridge, Bluetooth or Matter over Thread: what does each give you?
The three ways to connect Hue, from Hue's UK pages and Matter guide, checked 1 November 2026.
| Route | What you need | Works with | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hue Bridge | A Bridge or Bridge Pro, wired to your router by Ethernet as Hue recommends | Google Home, Alexa and Apple Home, including through Matter | 50 lights and 12 accessories on the Bridge; 150+ lights and 50+ accessories on the Bridge Pro |
| Bluetooth only | Your phone in the same room as the lights, within Bluetooth range | The Hue app | Up to 10 lights and 10 accessories; no Matter and, per Hue's bulb pages, no voice assistants |
| Matter over Thread, no Bridge | Hue lights with the Matter logo, and a Thread border router | The app of the hub's maker, such as Google Home | Matter-logo lights only; a light must leave the Bridge first |
Hue's Matter page leaves the Play HDMI Sync Box and the dial on the Tap dial switch out of Matter, even through a Bridge.
How is Philips Hue installation priced in London?
A vetted pro prices your Hue job from the products and your photos, and the JACK app shows that fixed price before you book.
Whether the job touches your wiring matters more than how many lights there are. Fitting B22 or GU10 bulbs, setting up a Bridge and plugging in lamps, Play bars or a lightstrip is set-up work. Ceiling lights, Perifo track, wall switch modules and mains outdoor lights are electrical work on your existing circuits, priced for the isolating, connecting and testing each one needs.
Then the home itself: a heavy fitting that has to go into a joist, a high or sloping ceiling, a two-way landing that needs a module at both switches, old cable with no earth, or a long garden run for low-volt lights. On a high ceiling or a long fitting, your pro can ask another pro on JACK to help through the Pro2Pro feature. Several Hue jobs, and devices from other brands, go on one booking for one fixed price.
You buy the Hue products; JACK does not sell them. Accessories the job needs, such as a deeper back box, an in-use cover for an outdoor socket or aluminium channel for a strip, are agreed and added at cost before you book, and so is parking where it has to be paid for. Prefer to pay for time? As a guide, hourly hire is typically £45–£95 per hour for smart home work and £55–£110 per hour for electrical work, and a full-day handyman booking is a flat £350–£400 for up to 8 hours on site, which suits a whole-house Hue fit.
Frequently asked questions
Does Philips Hue work with Google Home without a Bridge?
Only for Hue lights with the Matter logo, joined directly over Thread through a Google device that is a Thread border router, such as a Nest Hub (2nd gen) or Nest Wifi Pro. Lights added over Bluetooth alone cannot use Matter, and Hue's bulb pages list voice assistants as needing a Bridge.
Do I need a Hue Bridge for Alexa?
For the full Hue range, yes. Without a Bridge, a Hue light with the Matter logo can join Alexa directly over Thread through an Echo that acts as a Thread border router; Hue names the Echo (4th Gen) as an example.
Does Philips Hue work with Matter?
Yes. Hue says all its products work with Matter when connected through a Hue Bridge, apart from the Play HDMI Sync Box and the dial on the Tap dial switch. Lights with the Matter logo can also join a Matter system directly over Thread.
What is a Thread border router?
A device that links Thread, the low-power network some smart bulbs use, to your home network and its Matter controller. Google lists the Google Home Speaker, Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi Pro and Google TV Streamer as handling Matter over Thread.
Will Hue still work with Google Home after upgrading to the Bridge Pro?
Yes, but it has to be reconnected. Hue's upgrade guide says Alexa and Google must be linked again after the move to the Bridge Pro, and Apple Home must be set up again.
