Philips Hue Bridge Set-Up and Bulb Installation in London
Updated
Any Hue system bigger than a few lamps runs through a Bridge, and where that Bridge sits decides how well the far rooms respond. A vetted JACK pro in London cables it to your router, fits your Hue bulbs, groups them into rooms and links the voice assistant you already use, then shows you how to run it day to day.
In short
Yes: a vetted JACK pro in London sets up a Philips Hue Bridge or Bridge Pro on a cable to your router, fits Hue bulbs in your existing B22, E27, E14 and GU10 lampholders, and builds the rooms, scenes, remotes and voice control around them, none of which touches your wiring. Hue rates the Bridge for 50 lights and 12 accessories and the Bridge Pro for 150+ lights, while Bluetooth on its own stops at 10 lights in one room. You see a fixed price for the set-up in the JACK app before booking.
Send a photo of your router and where it sits, the light fittings the bulbs are going into, and a list or order of your Hue products. Moving an older Bridge onto a Bridge Pro, or tying Hue into Apple Home, Google Home or Alexa, can go on the same booking.

Bluetooth, Bridge or Bridge Pro: which does your home need?
Hue lights are usually run one of three ways, and the number of lights and what you want them to do decide which:
- Bluetooth only: your phone runs up to 10 lights and 10 accessories in one room, within about 10 m, with no Matter, no Apple Home and no control while you are out, and Hue's bulb pages mark voice assistants 'Hue Bridge required'
- Hue Bridge: the square hub Hue says supports 50 lights and 12 accessories, adding automations, voice control, Matter, control from anywhere and the Hue Secure features
- Hue Bridge Pro: Hue's current hub, listed for 150+ lights, 50+ accessories and up to 500 scenes, and the only one that runs MotionAware, which uses compatible Hue lights as motion sensors
- Lights first set up over Bluetooth can be moved onto a Bridge later, so starting small wastes nothing
- Hue bulbs carrying the Matter logo can also join Apple Home, Google Home or Alexa directly over Thread, through a hub such as the Google Nest Hub (2nd Gen), though Hue says a bulb must leave the Bridge first and the Bridge route keeps the most features
Most of Hue's outdoor lights and both of its wall switch modules for smart lights need a Bridge, which settles the question in many homes.
Hue Bridge Pro installation and migrationWhere should the Hue Bridge go in a London home?
Hue's answer is on a cable to the router. The rest comes down to the building:
- Hue says the square Bridge has no Wi-Fi of its own and must be hardwired to the router; the Bridge Pro comes with an Ethernet cable in the box, and Hue recommends using it for the most reliable connection
- Every mains-powered Hue light passes the Zigbee signal on to the next, so Hue's answer for a far room is another Hue light in between
- In a long terrace, or a house with a basement and a loft, a router at one end leaves the far end on the edge of the mesh; moving the router, or a wired access point, may beat buying more lights
- Zigbee shares the 2.4 GHz band with Wi-Fi, so when lights lag, changing the Zigbee channel in the Hue app is a common fix
- The Bridge can stand on a shelf or be fixed to a wall, with its cable run tidily back to the router
What does a Hue set-up visit cover?
Beyond plugging in the hub, the work that makes Hue easy for everyone at home:
- Bulbs into existing fittings by cap: B22 bayonet in most British ceiling roses, E27 and E14 screw caps in lamps and candle fittings, GU10 in downlights. Hue sells native B22 bulbs, so no adapter is needed
- Rooms and zones named the way your household talks about them, and scenes for the times of day you use
- Power-on behaviour chosen for each light, so after a power cut or a flick of the wall switch it returns as Hue's default, its last setting or a colour you pick
- Battery remotes such as the Dimmer Switch or Tap Dial paired and fixed beside the switch people reach for
- Hue linked to Apple Home, Google Home or Alexa, with Matter through the Bridge, which Hue says covers all its products except the Play HDMI Sync Box and the dial on the Tap Dial switch
- Everyone who should control the lights invited into the Hue app, so the account stays yours
What should you check before buying Hue bulbs?
Four checks save a return trip:
- The cap in each fitting: B22 and E27 look alike from below but do not swap, and GU10 spots twist in on two pins
- Dimmer switches: Hue says older dimmers made for incandescent bulbs can make LEDs flicker, so the pro usually swaps an old dimmer for a plain switch plus a remote or module
- Recessed fittings: Hue gives its GU10 spotlight as 57.8 mm long and 50 mm across, so the pro measures your existing downlights before you buy a box of them
- Essential or standard: Hue's Essential A60 B22 dims to 2% across 2,200–6,500 K, while its A60 B22 1100 dims to 0.2% across 1,000–20,000 K. Hue lists a minimum support period of 60 months for the Essential B22 and its GU10 spotlight, against 36 months for both Bridges

How is Philips Hue installation priced in London?
A vetted pro prices your Hue job from the products and your photos, and the JACK app shows that fixed price before you book.
Whether the job touches your wiring matters more than how many lights there are. Fitting B22 or GU10 bulbs, setting up a Bridge and plugging in lamps, Play bars or a lightstrip is set-up work. Ceiling lights, Perifo track, wall switch modules and mains outdoor lights are electrical work on your existing circuits, priced for the isolating, connecting and testing each one needs.
Then the home itself: a heavy fitting that has to go into a joist, a high or sloping ceiling, a two-way landing that needs a module at both switches, old cable with no earth, or a long garden run for low-volt lights. On a high ceiling or a long fitting, your pro can ask another pro on JACK to help through the Pro2Pro feature. Several Hue jobs, and devices from other brands, go on one booking for one fixed price.
You buy the Hue products; JACK does not sell them. Accessories the job needs, such as a deeper back box, an in-use cover for an outdoor socket or aluminium channel for a strip, are agreed and added at cost before you book, and so is parking where it has to be paid for. Prefer to pay for time? As a guide, hourly hire is typically £45–£95 per hour for smart home work and £55–£110 per hour for electrical work, and a full-day handyman booking is a flat £350–£400 for up to 8 hours on site, which suits a whole-house Hue fit.
How it works
Step 1
List the products and add photos
Name the Hue products you have, or paste the order, and photograph where each goes: the existing light and ceiling, the switch that runs it, the outside wall for garden lights, and your router.
Step 2
Accept one fixed price, then book a day
A vetted pro prices the whole list from your photos, and any part the job needs is agreed at cost up front. Only once you accept that price do you book, picking a day that suits you, with evenings and weekends where pros offer them.
Step 3
Fitted, connected and handed over
Power isolated before any light or switch is touched, each item fixed, connected and tested, then added to your Bridge with rooms and scenes set up with you.
Frequently asked questions
Can the Hue Bridge be set up without Ethernet?
The square Hue Bridge cannot: Hue says it has no Wi-Fi and must be wired to your router. The Bridge Pro can join Wi-Fi, although Hue recommends the Ethernet cable that comes with it. If the router sits somewhere awkward, the pro runs a neat cable or plans a wired access point with you.
Bridge or Bridge Pro: which should I buy?
For up to 50 lights and 12 accessories, the Hue Bridge is enough. The Bridge Pro suits bigger homes, anyone planning more than 50 lights, and anyone who wants MotionAware. JACK does not sell either, but from your photos the pro can say which one fits your home before you buy.
Do I need a Bridge for Hue bulbs?
Not for a single room. Hue's Bluetooth control runs up to 10 lights in one room from your phone. Bluetooth-only lights cannot use Matter, Apple Home or control away from home, though, and Hue's bulb pages list voice assistants as needing a Bridge, so most homes with more than one room of Hue end up with one.
Can you set up Hue with Alexa, Google Home or Apple Home?
Yes. The pro links your Hue account to the assistant you use, or adds the Bridge to your Matter home, then checks each room answers by name. Have your Hue, Google, Amazon or Apple sign-in to hand on the day.
How much does Hue set-up cost in London?
It is a fixed price for your job, worked out from the products and your photos and shown in the JACK app before you book. A Bridge and a few bulbs is a short visit; a whole house of rooms, remotes and voice control takes longer. Paying for time instead? Smart home work is typically £45–£95 per hour as a guide.
