Philips Hue Datura Ceiling Light Installation in London
Updated
The Datura is a Philips Hue ceiling light with integrated LEDs, listed on Hue's UK site in small, standard and large sizes. The 30 × 120 cm version is 1.2 m long and weighs 8.6 kg, and on 1 November 2026 its UK page showed both 'Only a few left' and 'Temporarily out of stock', so this page is written for people who already have one. A vetted JACK pro in London takes down the light you have now, fixes the Datura into the ceiling structure, connects it to the same supply and adds it to the Hue app, for a fixed price you see before you book.
In short
Yes. A vetted JACK pro in London can replace an existing ceiling light with a Philips Hue Datura on the same wiring, which in England is not notifiable under Part P. The Datura runs at 220–240 V and is Class II, so it does not depend on an earth, but the 30 × 120 cm size weighs 8.6 kg, so the pro fixes it into joists or another solid fixing rather than plasterboard alone.

Product facts come from Philips Hue's UK product pages and support articles, linked beside each fact; where the UK page is silent, a few come from Hue's other English-language sites and say so. Hue changes its range often, so check the model on your box or order and send it with your request. Last checked 1 November 2026.
How the Datura Ceiling Light is powered and mounted
The Datura has its LEDs built in and is wired to the mains like any ceiling fitting: it takes the place of the pendant, batten or flush light you have now, on the same cable at the same ceiling point. Hue rates it Class II, double insulated, so its safety does not rely on an earth, which matters in older London homes where a lighting circuit from before about 1966 may have none. Its IP20 rating makes it a fitting for dry rooms, so a bathroom is the wrong place for it.
Weight and length are what turn this from a light swap into a fixing job. The 30 × 120 cm Datura is 1.2 m long and 8.6 kg, and Hue's UK page gives no fixing method, so JACK's practice is not to trust that weight to plasterboard alone: the pro finds the joists and fixes into them or into another solid fixing. Where the supply comes out between joists in an awkward spot, the options are agreed with you before you book.
Like every Hue light, the Datura stays controllable only while it has power. Hue's Bluetooth control runs up to 10 lights in one room from a phone, and a Hue Bridge takes 50 and adds control away from home, so a single Datura can start on Bluetooth and join a Bridge later. The wall switch is the snag: turned off, it cuts the light from the app, so the pro talks you through leaving it on, a battery Hue switch beside it, or a Hue wall switch module behind it, which needs a Bridge.
What the pro checks first
- The size and weight printed on your Datura's box, since the figures here are for the 30 × 120 cm version
- Which way the joists run above the existing light, and whether the fitting's fixing points can reach them
- What the ceiling is made of: plasterboard, lath and plaster, or concrete in a newer block
- The cables at the old light, whether a loop-in rose with several of them or a single feed
- Whether the switch for this light is a dimmer, which Hue's leaflet says not to connect
What the pro does on the Datura Ceiling Light
- Circuit isolated at the consumer unit and proved dead, never just switched off at the wall
- Fixings chosen for an 8.6 kg, 1.2 m fitting and driven into joists or another solid fixing, not plasterboard alone
- Brown to live and blue to neutral at the Datura's terminals, with the loop-in connections from the old rose kept intact and enclosed
- Any dimmer on the switch taken out of use, since a Hue light dims itself
- For a long, heavy fitting held overhead while the wires go in, your pro can ask another pro on JACK to help through the Pro2Pro feature
- Datura added to the Hue app or your Bridge, with the up and down light set the way you want them
How the Datura Ceiling Light installation goes
- 1Your photos of the old light, its switch and the Datura's box reviewed, so the fixing method is known before the visit
- 2Power off at the consumer unit, the circuit proved dead and the old fitting taken down
- 3Joists found and the Datura's fixing positions marked to suit them and the supply
- 4Fitting connected, fixed up and its cover closed
- 5Power restored, the work tested, and the Datura paired over Bluetooth or to your Bridge
- 6Switch arrangement settled with you, and the paperwork covered: ask your pro for a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate before they leave
Before you book: what to send
- A photo of the light on the ceiling now, and one of the switch that controls it
- The Datura's size from the box or your order: small, standard or large
- Whether that switch is a dimmer, a plain rocker or a pull cord
- A clear shot of your fuse board, cover closed, so the lighting circuits can be identified
- If you rent, your landlord's agreement to change a fixed light fitting
Does swapping a ceiling light for a Datura need a registered electrician?
Not in England, as long as it goes on an existing circuit and away from a bathroom's zones:
- Approved Document P treats replacements anywhere, and additions or alterations to existing circuits outside the bath and shower zones, as not notifiable, so a competent pro may do the work
- Moving the light to a new spot on the same lighting circuit is an addition to that circuit, and it is not notifiable either
- A new circuit from the consumer unit, or an addition or alteration in the zones around a bath or shower, is notifiable; that needs a registered electrician, and JACK does not book it as part of this job
- Work that is not notifiable must still be safe and tested to BS 7671, and the record of that is a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate, which you should ask your pro for
No pro JACK books is registered with a competent person scheme, and this job does not need one.

Is there an installation manual for the Philips Hue Datura?
Not on Hue's UK product page for the 30 × 120 cm Datura, which gives no installation steps or electrician advice. Hue's general luminaire safety leaflet covers the basics: fixings that suit the weight and the ceiling, and following the wire colours, blue for neutral and brown for live. A pro works from that leaflet and from whatever instructions came in your box.
Does the Datura need a Hue Bridge?
No. Its UK page lists Bluetooth as well as Zigbee, and Hue's Bluetooth control handles up to 10 lights in one room from your phone. A Bridge takes up to 50 lights and adds control away from home, and Hue says Bluetooth lights can be moved onto one later.
Can I keep my dimmer switch with a Datura?
Not as a dimmer. Hue's luminaire safety leaflet says 'Do not connect to an additional dimmer', and the Datura dims itself from the app or a Hue switch. The pro takes the dimmer out of use and fits a plain switch in its place where needed, with the switch added at cost and agreed before you book.
How much does Philips Hue Datura Ceiling Light installation cost in London?
It is a fixed price for your Datura Ceiling Light, worked out by a vetted pro from the model, a photo of where it is going and what power is there now, and shown in the JACK app before you book. Other devices can go on the same booking for one price. If you would rather pay for time, hourly hire for electrical work is typically £55–£110 per hour as a guide.
