Aqara U200 or U600: Which Smart Lock Fits Your UK Front Door?

Updated

Aqara now has three answers for British front doors, and they work in three different ways: one swaps your handles and cylinder, one sits inside over the cylinder you have, and one replaces a timber door's nightlatch. Which one your door can take comes down to a handful of checks, made in a set order.

In short

Which Aqara lock fits a UK front door depends on what throws its bolts. On a uPVC or composite multipoint where lifting the handle throws the bolts, the U600 swaps the handles and cylinder within Aqara's limits of a 35–70 mm backset, 72–92 mm handle centres and a 40–80 mm door, while the U200 or U200 Lite keeps your cylinder if it has an emergency function. A timber door with a rim nightlatch suits neither, only the U500 rim lock, and a JACK locksmith in London runs Aqara's checks on your door before you buy, with a stricter rule for a flat's entrance fire door.

What kind of front door is it?

The door type rules most options in or out before anything is measured:

  • uPVC or composite with a multipoint lock and a euro cylinder: the door the U600 is built for, and the U200 can work on it too
  • Timber with a euro-cylinder mortice sashlock: a U200 candidate, as Aqara lists mortice locks with a suitable cylinder
  • Timber with a rim nightlatch and a lever mortice deadlock: Aqara rules rim locks out for the U200, so only the U500 rim lock is left

Aqara's U400, made for single-cylinder deadbolt doors and linked to Amazon in the US, and its other non-UK locks are not sold through Aqara's UK channels.

Does lifting the handle lock your door?

On a multipoint, this is the question that splits the two locks:

  • Lift-to-lock: you lift the handle to throw the hooks or bolts, then turn the key. You keep lifting the handle yourself with either Aqara lock, and Aqara's UK shop adds that on the U600 lifting only extends the bolts, so you then lock it with its button, the app or auto-lock
  • Aqara puts the U600's condition in one line: 'If lifting your existing door handle does not engage the deadbolt, the U600 will not be able to operate that deadbolt'
  • The U200 is listed for a 'UK Lift Lever Lock' at Aqara's 'Moderate' difficulty, and Aqara notes that the area for its adhesive on these locks is small
  • Slam-shut multipoints, which lock themselves as the door closes, are not covered by Aqara for the U600, and Aqara calls the U200 unsuitable for self-locking doors, so this door is tested on site before you buy

A door that is already stiff to lock is put right first. Aqara's UK shop does not recommend the U600 for one, saying a smart lock cannot fix mechanical issues.

Keeping your cylinder is the U200's main advantage

The U200 and U200 Lite turn the cylinder you already have, which Aqara says needs no drilling or door modifications, provided the cylinder passes these tests:

  • Emergency function: a key still opens the door from outside while another key sits in the inside
  • The inside key is no more than 5 mm thick, with a handle no longer than 39 mm
  • Turning the inside key or knob opens both the deadbolt and the latch
  • The U200's fixing plate goes on with screws where the cylinder protrudes 3 mm or more, and with Aqara's adhesive where it protrudes less

If yours fails, the pro looks for a TS 007 three-star replacement whose maker states an emergency function, not an unrated cylinder, and many insurers' lock clauses expect a key-operated lock.

What UK insurers expect from a front-door lock

The U600 swaps the cylinder, so the door has to measure up

Where the U600 is the better route, for example because your cylinder will not suit a U200, the pro checks Aqara's figures:

  • Backset of 35–70 mm and handle centres of 72–92 mm. Ferco handles at 70 mm and Fullex at 68 mm sit below that range
  • A door 40–80 mm thick, and a handle that presses down less than 60° to open
  • The multipoint body stays, but Aqara says fitting the U600 requires removing your cylinder, and asks you to check with your insurer first

The pro keeps your old handles and cylinder and hands them back to you.

A timber door with a nightlatch means the U500, and usually a new hole

For a timber front door with a rim nightlatch, Aqara's only fit is the Smart Rim Lock U500:

  • It replaces the nightlatch, on a door 20–60 mm thick, with the door and frame sitting flush
  • Aqara sets its backset at 40–45 mm and needs one 50 mm hole and two 12 mm holes
  • UK nightlatches are commonly set 60 mm from the edge, with 40 mm versions for narrow or glazed stiles, so on a solid door the 50 mm hole usually has to be cut new
  • Aqara makes no BS 3621 claim for it, so the mortice deadlock below stays in use for your insurer

Once the hole is cut the old nightlatch cannot simply go back, so the choice is confirmed with you before drilling.

Flats and shared houses come with an overriding rule

Two situations change the answer whatever the door measures:

  • Flat front doors onto a shared corridor or stair are normally self-closing fire doors, and GOV.UK's fire door guidance says a resident's changes to one should be made with the knowledge and agreement of the building's Responsible Person
  • So JACK pros do not fit a U600 or a U500 on one at all: both change parts the fire rating depends on, and Aqara publishes no fire-test evidence for either
  • A U200, which leaves the lock in place, is considered only over a cylinder that already has the emergency function, on a door that still closes and latches by itself, with the managing agent's written go-ahead
  • Wandsworth Council's HMO fire-safety advice wants exit doors that occupiers can open from inside without a removable key, so a shared house never gets a key-only lock on the inside of its final exit door

Photos and three measurements settle which Aqara lock to buy

The locksmith works from these, and the fixed price is shown in the JACK app before you book. London homes only. Send:

  • The whole door, outside and inside
  • The door edge with the door open, showing the faceplate and any hooks or rollers
  • The cylinder close up, with any star rating or Kitemark visible
  • Three measurements: door edge to cylinder centre, spindle to cylinder centre, and the door's thickness

You buy the lock; JACK does not sell Aqara products. A cylinder or other part the door needs is agreed and added at cost before you book.

How is Aqara installation priced in London?

A vetted pro prices your Aqara job from the models and your photos, and the JACK app shows that fixed price before you book.

What the job touches moves the price more than the device does. Pairing a hub, fixing sensors, clipping a Curtain Driver E1 onto a rail or fitting radiator thermostat heads is set-up work. A smart lock is locksmith work on the door. An H1 or H2 switch, a Dual Relay Module T2 or a 230 V blind motor is mains work on an existing circuit, priced for isolating, connecting and testing.

The home comes next: a multipoint door that needs adjusting before a lock goes on, a bell transformer too weak for the doorbell, a PoE cable through solid brick. Where a job needs a second pair of hands, your pro can ask another pro on JACK to help through the Pro2Pro feature. Several devices, Aqara or other brands, go on one booking for one fixed price.

You buy the Aqara products; JACK does not sell them. Accessories the job needs, such as a replacement cylinder, a deeper back box, a 12 V plug-in supply or a PoE injector, are agreed and added at cost before you book, and so is parking where it has to be paid for. Prefer to pay for time? As a guide, hourly hire is typically £45–£95 per hour for smart home work, £55–£110 for electrical work and £60–£130 for locksmith work, and a full-day handyman booking is a flat £350–£400 for up to 8 hours on site.

Frequently asked questions

Will the Aqara U200 fit a composite door?

It can, if it is a lift-to-lock multipoint and its euro cylinder has an emergency function, so a key works from outside with another key in the inside. Aqara says the U200 is not suitable for self-locking doors, so slam-shut composites are checked first.

Aqara U200 or U600: which is better for a UK door?

The U200 keeps your cylinder and, Aqara says, needs no drilling, which suits renters and doors with a good emergency-function cylinder. The U600 replaces the handles and cylinder on a lift-to-lock multipoint, which suits doors whose cylinder will not work with a U200, if the door is within Aqara's measurements and your insurer agrees.

Does the Aqara U600 work on a slam-shut door?

Aqara has not said. Its condition is that lifting the handle must engage the deadbolt, and on a slam-shut multipoint the bolts engage as the door closes, so a JACK locksmith tests that door on site before you buy anything.

Is there an Aqara smart lock for a timber door with a nightlatch?

The Smart Rim Lock U500. Aqara gives it a 40–45 mm backset while UK nightlatches are commonly set at 60 mm, so it usually needs a new 50 mm hole, and with no BS 3621 claim from Aqara the door's mortice deadlock stays.

Can I fit an Aqara lock to my flat's front door?

Only with the building's say-so. A flat's front door is normally a fire door, and GOV.UK's guidance expects changes to have the Responsible Person's knowledge and agreement. With that in writing, a JACK pro considers a U200 over an existing emergency-function cylinder; a U600 or U500 is not fitted on a flat entrance fire door at all.
