Is Aqara Safe? UK Security Updates, Subscriptions and Privacy

Updated

Aqara publishes a UK product-security statement for most of its range, each giving a 'defined support period' for security updates, and for many models that period ends on 31 December 2026. This guide lays the dates out as Aqara gives them, says what they do and do not mean, and covers subscriptions and privacy for the devices that watch or sense people.

In short

Aqara's UK security statements give most of its current range, including the Hub M3, the U200 lock, the G410 doorbell and the H2 switches, a defined support period for security updates to 31 December 2026, while the U500 rim lock runs to 2028 and the G400 Wired doorbell to 2029 (checked 1 November 2026). The statements do not say the devices stop working after those dates, and Aqara has already extended one. A JACK pro in London brings firmware up to date at installation, sets privacy masking on doorbells and cameras that have it, and keeps face and vital-sign features to the people who asked for them.

How long does Aqara promise UK security updates?

Aqara's Global Security and Compliance Statements page lists UK statements product by product, each marked Active or end-of-life (EOL), and says its devices sold in the UK comply with the PSTI Regulations. Checked on 1 November 2026:

  • Most current models, including the Hub M3 and M100, the U200 lock and keypad, the G410 doorbell, the Camera Hub G5 Pro, the H1 and H2 switches, the T2 relay, the curtain and roller-shade drivers and the Smoke Detector: a defined support period to 31 December 2026
  • Smart Rim Lock U500: to 31 December 2028. Doorbell Camera G400 Wired: to 31 December 2029
  • U200 Lite: Aqara's August 2026 statement gives 31 December 2027, later than the 2026 date in its earlier copy. The code EL-D02E appears in both the U200 and the U200 Lite statements, so the pro reads your label before quoting a date
  • Presence Sensor FP2: 'at least 2 years from the launch day', with no fixed date

Aqara's page also commits to maintaining security updates for at least 2 years from the launch day of certain models. The statements set dates for updates, not for the devices themselves, and Aqara has moved a date later before.

Which products does Aqara mark end-of-life?

Aqara's UK security page marks five products EOL that the Aqara UK Shop still lists:

  • Video Doorbell G4
  • Smart Radiator Thermostat E1
  • Hub E1
  • Roller Shade Controller T1S
  • Smart Roller Shade Controller

A pro tells you before fitting one, so you can weigh a current model in the same role, such as the G410 or G400 doorbell, the W600 radiator thermostat or a Hub M3.

What else bears on whether Aqara is safe?

Four more things people ask, answered from the record:

  • Recalls: GOV.UK's product safety alerts, reports and recalls search returned no results for 'aqara' on 1 November 2026
  • Who makes it: aqara.com names Lumi United Technology Co., Ltd. in its footer, and JACK is not affiliated with it
  • Missing statements: Aqara's UK page listed none for the U600 lock, the W600 radiator thermostat, the Hub M200, the Power Plug H2 UK, the FP300 or the FP400 when we checked, which is not a finding that they fall short
  • Region lock: Aqara says its devices are designed to work in the regions tied to their original sales market and may be limited elsewhere, so a pro fits UK or EU stock

Where does a subscription come in?

Mainly with cameras and doorbells, through HomeGuardian, Aqara's cloud service:

  • The G410 comes with a one-month HomeGuardian trial, and its Select version with three months
  • Without the cloud, the G400 records to a microSD card of up to 512 GB and offers RTSP and ONVIF for a local recorder, and a wired G410 records 24/7 to the microSD card in its indoor chime
  • Apple users can use HomeKit Secure Video instead, which for the G400 needs iCloud+ and an Apple home hub
  • Aqara's EU page for the FP2 says some newly added features may need an Aqara subscription

Privacy depends on who the device watches or senses

The rules change once other people are in view:

  • A doorbell or camera that captures the street, a shared hallway or a neighbour's garden brings UK data protection law in, as GOV.UK's domestic CCTV guidance explains: ask whether you need audio, put up a notice and delete footage you no longer need
  • The G410 has privacy masking to block parts of the image, and face recognition on the device; the pro enrols only your household's faces
  • The FP2 senses presence by radar, with no camera. The Aqara UK Shop advertises sleep monitoring with heart and breathing rates for one person sleeping alone, and says that tracking does not work in third-party apps
  • Readings of someone's heart and breathing count as health data, so the pro sets vital-sign tracking up only for the person who wants it, and suggests that everyone living or working in the home is told the sensors are there

Updates and privacy settings are part of the installation

The pro covers these inside the fixed price shown in the JACK app before you book, for London homes only:

  • Hub and device firmware brought up to date in the Aqara Home app
  • Privacy masking on any doorbell or camera that sees beyond your boundary
  • Face recognition limited to your household, and vital-sign tracking only for the person it is meant for
  • Local recording set up on a microSD card where the model takes one

Tell the pro which models you have; any that Aqara marks EOL are pointed out before fitting. A microSD card is agreed at cost before you book, and JACK does not sell Aqara devices.

When does each Aqara product's UK security-update period end?

From Aqara's UK product-security (PSTI) statements, as listed on its Global Security and Compliance Statements page and checked on 1 November 2026.

How is Aqara installation priced in London?

A vetted pro prices your Aqara job from the models and your photos, and the JACK app shows that fixed price before you book.

What the job touches moves the price more than the device does. Pairing a hub, fixing sensors, clipping a Curtain Driver E1 onto a rail or fitting radiator thermostat heads is set-up work. A smart lock is locksmith work on the door. An H1 or H2 switch, a Dual Relay Module T2 or a 230 V blind motor is mains work on an existing circuit, priced for isolating, connecting and testing.

The home comes next: a multipoint door that needs adjusting before a lock goes on, a bell transformer too weak for the doorbell, a PoE cable through solid brick. Where a job needs a second pair of hands, your pro can ask another pro on JACK to help through the Pro2Pro feature. Several devices, Aqara or other brands, go on one booking for one fixed price.

You buy the Aqara products; JACK does not sell them. Accessories the job needs, such as a replacement cylinder, a deeper back box, a 12 V plug-in supply or a PoE injector, are agreed and added at cost before you book, and so is parking where it has to be paid for. Prefer to pay for time? As a guide, hourly hire is typically £45–£95 per hour for smart home work, £55–£110 for electrical work and £60–£130 for locksmith work, and a full-day handyman booking is a flat £350–£400 for up to 8 hours on site.

Frequently asked questions

Is Aqara safe to use?

Aqara publishes UK security statements with dated update periods for most of its range, and GOV.UK's recall search showed no Aqara recalls on 1 November 2026. Up-to-date firmware and UK or EU stock, which a pro checks, matter as much as the brand.

Will my Aqara device stop working after 31 December 2026?

Aqara's statements do not say so. The date is the end of the security-update period in Aqara's UK statement, and Aqara has already moved the U200 Lite's date from the end of 2026 to the end of 2027, so the statements page is worth checking again in the new year.

Does Aqara require a subscription?

Not for most devices. HomeGuardian, Aqara's optional cloud plan, is aimed at cameras and doorbells, and the G410 comes with a trial; the G400 and a wired G410 can record to a microSD card without it. Aqara's EU page also says some newer FP2 features may need a subscription.

Is the Aqara FP2 a privacy risk?

It has no camera: it senses presence by radar. It can track sleep, heart and breathing rates for one person, which is health data, so in a shared or rented home it should be set up only for the person who wants it, with everyone in the home told it is there.
