Aqara Switches With No Neutral and Shallow UK Back Boxes

Updated

Aqara's UK channels sell no British-format light switch. What reaches UK homes are its EU switches, which suit an 86 mm square box but sit deeper in the wall than many British boxes allow, and which have to cope with the missing neutral behind most UK switches. This guide covers Aqara's models only; the wider UK picture is in our Philips Hue switch guide.

In short

Some Aqara switches work without a neutral. The H1 No Neutral, and the Light Switch H2, which works with or without a neutral, suit a UK switch position that has no neutral as long as the bulbs meet Aqara's minimum load of 3 W of LED for the H1 and 5 W for the H2, while the Shutter Switch H2 needs a neutral. They sit about 30 mm into the wall and the Dimmer H2 34.6 mm, so a 25 mm UK box is too shallow, and a JACK pro in London checks the box, the neutral and the earth before fitting, changing to a deeper box where needed.

Aqara's UK switches are EU models, including the 'UK exclusive' H2

There is no British-format Aqara light switch on Aqara's UK channels. What they sell:

  • Light Switch H2 EU: the Aqara UK Shop's 'UK exclusive version' adds an extra dark grey button, but the switch is the EU model, 85.8 × 86 × 45 mm with an in-wall depth of 30 mm, which also fits 55 × 55 mm System 55 modular frames
  • Smart Wall Switch H1 EU, in No Neutral and With Neutral versions, which Aqara says suits 86 mm square wall boxes as well as round European ones
  • Dimmer Switch H2 EU and Shutter Switch H2 EU, from the same H2 family

An 86 mm plate covers a UK single box, but Aqara does not publish the spacing of its fixing screws, so the pro checks them against the lugs in your box before you buy.

Which Aqara switches work without a neutral?

Traditional UK homes usually lack a neutral at the switch, as Aqara's own UK shop puts it. By model:

  • Smart Wall Switch H1 No Neutral: designed for boxes without one; Aqara's minimum is 3 W of LED or energy-saving lamps, or 16 W of fluorescent, per channel
  • Light Switch H2: works with or without a neutral. Without one it needs at least 3 W of energy-saving bulbs, 5 W of LED or 16 W of fluorescent; with one, Aqara sets no minimum
  • Dimmer Switch H2: Aqara's listing gives a minimum of 4 W when it is added through Matter in Aqara Home, or 9 W by other methods, and up to 200 W of dimmable LED
  • Shutter Switch H2: a neutral is required

Below those loads lamps can misbehave, and Aqara's UK shop page for the H1 warns that lamps from small or copycat brands may flicker, so the pro checks the wattage on each circuit before choosing.

Will an Aqara switch fit your back box?

Depth is the usual sticking point in British walls. Aqara's in-wall figures against UK flush boxes:

  • H1 and H2: about 30 mm inside the wall, by Aqara's figure for each
  • Dimmer H2: 34.6 mm inside the wall, and Aqara's Amazon UK listing gives 40 mm as the minimum box depth
  • A 16 mm or 25 mm UK box is too shallow for any of them
  • A 35 mm box takes an H1 or H2; for the Dimmer H2 the pro fits a deeper box, around 47 mm

Swapping a back box for a deeper one on the same circuit is an alteration, not notifiable work, but in plaster or brick it means cutting the wall and making good, which is built into the fixed price. A surface spacer is the option where the wall should not be cut.

Older circuits need an answer on the earth

Some older London lighting circuits have no earth wire at the switch. With Aqara, that means:

  • The H2's terminals are live, neutral and switched live only, with no earth terminal
  • Aqara markets the H1 with a metal frame and does not say whether it needs earthing, so on a circuit with no earth the pro fits an H2 instead
  • A metal switch plate counts as Class I and needs an earth, so on an unearthed circuit the plate is all-insulated or an earth is run to it
  • Aqara's H1 page shows European wire colours, so the pro identifies each conductor by testing, not by colour

Whatever the switch, the circuit is isolated at the consumer unit first, because a smart switch turned off is not an isolator.

Two-way switching and dimmers have Aqara-specific limits

For a light switched from two places, Aqara's route avoids new cable, and its dimmer rules out one load type:

  • The H1 is paired with a Wireless Remote Switch H1 at the second position, which Aqara's listing says a two-way set-up requires; being wireless, it needs no cable between the two
  • Aqara notes that not every twin or double wall box takes the H1, so a two-gang position is measured first
  • The H1 needs an Aqara Zigbee hub to work, which is part of the set-up
  • Aqara says the Dimmer H2 is not compatible with MLV (magnetic low-voltage) loads, so older low-voltage lights on a dimmer are checked

A photo of each switch and its bulbs sets the price

Switch work books under electrical work, at a fixed price shown in the JACK app before you book. London homes only. Send:

  • A photo of each switch plate, and which lights it works
  • The bulbs on each of those lights, so the pro can check Aqara's minimum loads
  • Whether any light is switched from more than one place
  • The Aqara switches you have or plan to buy, and the hub you use

JACK does not book fixed electrical work inside a bathroom's zones. Ask your pro for a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate when the work is done; a deeper back box or a plate the job needs is agreed at cost before you book.

How is Aqara installation priced in London?

A vetted pro prices your Aqara job from the models and your photos, and the JACK app shows that fixed price before you book.

What the job touches moves the price more than the device does. Pairing a hub, fixing sensors, clipping a Curtain Driver E1 onto a rail or fitting radiator thermostat heads is set-up work. A smart lock is locksmith work on the door. An H1 or H2 switch, a Dual Relay Module T2 or a 230 V blind motor is mains work on an existing circuit, priced for isolating, connecting and testing.

The home comes next: a multipoint door that needs adjusting before a lock goes on, a bell transformer too weak for the doorbell, a PoE cable through solid brick. Where a job needs a second pair of hands, your pro can ask another pro on JACK to help through the Pro2Pro feature. Several devices, Aqara or other brands, go on one booking for one fixed price.

You buy the Aqara products; JACK does not sell them. Accessories the job needs, such as a replacement cylinder, a deeper back box, a 12 V plug-in supply or a PoE injector, are agreed and added at cost before you book, and so is parking where it has to be paid for. Prefer to pay for time? As a guide, hourly hire is typically £45–£95 per hour for smart home work, £55–£110 for electrical work and £60–£130 for locksmith work, and a full-day handyman booking is a flat £350–£400 for up to 8 hours on site.

Frequently asked questions

Do Aqara switches work without a neutral wire?

Some do. The H1 No Neutral is made for UK switch boxes without one, and the Light Switch H2 works with or without, though both then need a minimum bulb load. The Shutter Switch H2 needs a neutral.

Will an Aqara H2 switch fit a UK back box?

Once the box is deep enough. The H2 sits 30 mm into the wall, so a 25 mm box is too shallow and 35 mm is the practical minimum. The pro also checks that the fixing screws line up, since Aqara does not publish their spacing.

Is there a UK version of the Aqara H2 light switch?

Not in British format. The Aqara UK Shop sells a 'UK exclusive version' with an extra dark grey button, but it is the EU switch, sized for 86 mm square boxes and System 55 frames.

Why do my lights flicker with an Aqara no-neutral switch?

Usually because the load is below Aqara's minimum. Without a neutral the H2 needs at least 5 W of LED and the H1 3 W, and Aqara warns that lamps from small or copycat brands may flicker. A pro weighs adding bulbs, changing them, or bringing a neutral down from the ceiling rose.

Can I do two-way switching with Aqara in the UK?

Yes, mostly without new wiring. Aqara pairs the H1 with a Wireless Remote Switch H1 at the second switch position, and the pair runs through an Aqara Zigbee hub.
