Aqara Smart Rim Lock U500 Installation in London
Updated
The Smart Rim Lock U500 (model DL-D19D) is Aqara's answer for doors with a rim lock, the kind its U200 cannot fit. On most London timber front doors it is not a straight nightlatch swap: it centres 40–45 mm from the door edge against the usual 60 mm, brings its own fixed cylinder, and Aqara makes no BS 3621 claim for it. A vetted JACK locksmith in London measures your door first and fits the U500 only where it works, for a fixed price in the JACK app before you book.
In short
Sometimes: a vetted JACK locksmith in London can fit the Aqara Smart Rim Lock U500 on a door 20–60 mm thick that sits flush with its frame. It needs a 50 mm hole 40–45 mm from the door edge, which matches a 40 mm narrow-stile nightlatch and not the standard 60 mm one on most timber front doors. Aqara makes no BS 3621 claim for the U500, so a BS 3621 mortice deadlock on the same door should stay for your insurer.

How the Smart Rim Lock U500 is powered and mounted
The U500 is a complete lock that bolts through the door: an outside unit with the fingerprint reader, keypad, doorbell button and keyhole, an inside unit with the batteries, and a strike box on the frame. Aqara says it 'eliminates the need for an additional mortise lock', meaning it is a lock in its own right rather than a motor on yours. Its cylinder is part of the lock body, so you cannot upgrade it to an anti-snap cylinder of your choosing.
Fixing is where London doors part company with it. Aqara's holes are one of 50 mm and two of 12 mm, with the lock centred 40–45 mm in from the door edge. Standard UK nightlatches, BS 3621 models included, sit at 60 mm, and only narrow-stile nightlatches for glazed or slim doors sit at 40 mm. On most timber front doors, then, the U500 means boring a new hole rather than reusing the old one, and the pro has the old nightlatch hole to deal with as well, which the U500 may not cover.
Four AA batteries run it for up to 7 months in Aqara's figures, and a USB-C input gives emergency power. Over Thread it joins Apple Home, Google Home or Alexa through Matter, it supports Aliro, and it has a Night Latch mode. Aqara's UK Shop lists certifications including CE, MFi, Matter, Aliro, Thread, IP65 and RCM, with no BS 3621 among them.
What the pro checks first
- The backset of your current nightlatch, from the door edge to the middle of its cylinder: 40 mm lines up, 60 mm does not
- Door thickness within 20–60 mm, and whether door and frame sit flush when shut, as Aqara requires
- The gap round the door, which Aqara wants between 3 and 7 mm
- Whether a BS 3621 mortice deadlock is fitted that stays on for your insurer
- Room on the frame for the strike box, and whether the frame would need cutting to take it
- Whether the door is a flat's entrance door onto a shared corridor, where a JACK pro will not bore a 50 mm hole
What the pro does on the Smart Rim Lock U500
- Aqara's template marked at 40–45 mm from the edge, after you have agreed where the new holes go
- One 50 mm and two 12 mm holes bored square through the door, with the old nightlatch taken off and its holes dealt with as agreed
- Strike box fitted to the frame so the latch throws fully into it, cut in where the frame needs it
- Outside and inside units fixed through the door and connected without trapping the cable
- Lock set up in Aqara Home and in Matter if you use it, with fingerprints and codes added for the household
- Both keys tried from outside, and any mortice deadlock checked to still lock
How the Smart Rim Lock U500 installation goes
- 1Door measured and the fit agreed: backset, thickness, gap and a flush frame
- 2Old nightlatch and its cylinder removed and handed back to you
- 3Holes marked from Aqara's template and bored through the door
- 4Strike box fitted to the frame
- 5Outside and inside units fixed and connected, batteries in
- 6Lock added in the app, codes and fingerprints enrolled, and the latch tested with the door shut
Before you book: what to send
- A photo of your nightlatch from inside, and of the door edge with the door open
- The backset: from the door edge to the middle of the nightlatch cylinder
- The door thickness, and whether the door sits flush with the frame when shut
- A photo of any mortice deadlock and its BS 3621 mark
- Your insurer's lock clause
- In a flat, whether the door opens onto a common corridor
Does the U500 meet a home insurance lock condition?
Probably not on its own, since nothing Aqara lists for it is a UK lock standard:
- Many policies ask for a BS 3621 lock on timber exit doors, typically a five-lever mortice deadlock
- The U500 replaces the nightlatch, so a BS 3621 mortice deadlock kept on the same door is the lock the insurer's clause relies on
- If your nightlatch is itself the BS 3621 lock, such as a 60 mm BS 3621 nightlatch, ask your insurer before it comes off
- Its cylinder is fixed in the lock body, so there is no route to an anti-snap cylinder later
What about Aqara's U500 Gate Lock?
Aqara also sells a Smart Gate Lock U500 (DL-D18D) for garden gates:
- It suits gates 22–28 mm thick, with the same 40–45 mm backset and 3–7 mm gap
- It needs the same 50 mm hole and two 12 mm holes, and has fingerprint and key on both sides
- Its outer panel is rated IP65 and its inner panel IP54, and it runs on four AA batteries with a USB-C input
- At the end of a London garden, Thread and Bluetooth range from the house is the thing to check before it goes on
How does the U500 line up with UK nightlatches?
Nightlatch backsets from UK lock retailers' listings, against Aqara's 40–45 mm.
| Nightlatch on the door now | Backset | U500 fit | What changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard nightlatch, such as the Yale 77 | 60 mm | A new 50 mm hole 40–45 mm from the edge | A permanent change, with the old hole still there |
| BS 3621 nightlatch, such as the Yale PBS1 | 60 mm | As above, and the BS 3621 lock comes off | Ask your insurer before replacing it |
| Narrow-stile nightlatch, such as the Yale 706 or the 40 mm Yale 84 | 40 mm | Within Aqara's range | Hole sizes still checked against Aqara's 50 mm and 12 mm |
| Door that does not sit flush with its frame | Any | Aqara says door and frame must be flush | Not a U500 door without joinery work |
Models are named for reference only; measure your own door, since the lock body sets the backset.

Full pricing guide for Aqara installationFrequently asked questions
Will the Aqara U500 replace my Yale nightlatch?
Not hole for hole on most doors. A standard Yale-type nightlatch has a 60 mm backset, while the U500 needs its 50 mm hole 40–45 mm from the edge, so a new hole goes through the door. A 40 mm narrow-stile nightlatch lines up, and a pro measures yours before you buy.
Can the Aqara U500 go on a flat's front door?
Not if the door is a fire door onto a shared corridor or stair. Fitting the U500 means boring a 50 mm hole and replacing the lock, and JACK pros never bore a flat entrance fire door for it. GOV.UK's fire door guidance also says changes to a flat's front door should have the Responsible Person's agreement.
Does the Aqara U500 need a hub?
No, not to open the door by fingerprint, code, NFC, Bluetooth or key. Remote access and Matter need a Thread controller, and Aqara's UK Shop lists the Hub M3, M100, M200, Doorbell Camera Hub G410 and Camera Hub G5 Pro.
Is the Aqara U500 sold in the UK?
Yes. The Aqara UK Shop lists the Smart Rim Lock U500, and Aqara's UK product-security statement gives it a defined support period to 31 December 2028, longer than most Aqara models (checked 1 November 2026). JACK does not sell it, so you buy the lock and the pro fits it.
How much does Aqara Smart Rim Lock U500 installation cost in London?
It is a fixed price for your Smart Rim Lock U500, worked out by a vetted pro from the model, a photo of where it is going and what power is there now, and shown in the JACK app before you book. Other devices can go on the same booking for one price. If you would rather pay for time, hourly hire for locksmith is typically £60–£130 per hour as a guide.
