Aqara Hub M3 Installation in London

Updated

The Hub M3 (HM-G01E, or HM-G01D) is the hub most Aqara devices expect: a Zigbee hub, Thread border router and Matter controller in one unit, powered by USB-C or a PoE cable. Where it goes decides how well everything else works. A vetted JACK pro in London places or mounts it, moves devices across from an older Aqara hub and links it to Apple Home, Google Home or Alexa, for a fixed price in the JACK app before you book.

In short

Yes, a vetted JACK pro in London sets up the Aqara Hub M3 on a 5 V 2 A USB-C supply or a PoE cable, within 6 m of your router as Aqara advises, and pairs your Aqara Zigbee and Thread devices to it. The Hub M3 involves no electrical work, but its box holds no power adapter, so you need a USB adapter or a PoE switch.

Device facts come from Aqara's product pages, its UK and EU store, the Aqara UK Shop and Aqara's own Amazon UK listings, linked beside each fact. Aqara often sells one product under two codes and uses EU models in the UK, so check the name and code on your box or order and send it with your request. Last checked 1 November 2026.

How the Hub M3 is powered and mounted

Nothing is wired into the house for the M3. It runs from a USB-C supply of 5 V 2 A, using the cable in the box and an adapter you provide, or from a PoE switch over one network cable at 48 V, which also connects it by Ethernet. The bracket, screws and anchors in the box let it go on a wall or ceiling rather than a shelf.

Aqara asks for it within 6 m of the router, and its device numbers, 127 Zigbee and 127 Thread, rely on repeaters. Aqara's UK Shop explains that mains-powered Aqara devices with live and neutral, such as plugs, relays and neutral switches, act as Zigbee routers, while battery and live-only devices do not extend the mesh. In a solid-walled London house the pro looks at where those routers are before deciding where the hub goes.

The M3 is a Matter controller and bridge as well as a Thread border router, so Thread devices such as Aqara's locks join through it, and Aqara Zigbee devices can appear in Apple Home, Google Home or Alexa. Aqara's U600 manual asks for IPv6 to be switched on in the home network for Matter. Aqara's Amazon UK listing says the M3 can take over devices and automations from older Aqara hubs, with Matter and HomeKit set up again afterwards.

What the pro checks first

  • Where the router is, and a spot within 6 m of it that is central to your devices
  • Whether there is a PoE switch to run it from, or a socket and a USB-C adapter for it
  • Which of your devices are Aqara Zigbee or Thread, since the M3 does not take third-party Zigbee devices
  • Whether an older Aqara hub, such as an E1, M2 or M1S, is running devices that should move across
  • Which home app you use: Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings or Home Assistant

What the pro does on the Hub M3

  • Hub placed on a shelf, or fixed to a wall or ceiling with the bracket from the box, within 6 m of the router
  • Powered by USB-C from your adapter, or by a PoE cable run from your switch
  • Firmware updated and the hub added in Aqara Home
  • Devices moved over from an older Aqara hub, or paired fresh, and automations checked afterwards
  • Matter linked into your home app, with IPv6 on in the router
  • Mains router devices checked so a lock or sensor at the far end of the house stays in reach

How the Hub M3 installation goes

  1. 1Walk round the devices, the router and the walls in between
  2. 2Hub placed or mounted and powered by USB-C or PoE
  3. 3Hub added in Aqara Home and updated
  4. 4Devices migrated or paired nearest first, so mains routers build the mesh outwards
  5. 5Matter linked to Apple Home, Google Home or Alexa
  6. 6Each device tested from the app, the furthest ones included

Before you book: what to send

  • A list or photos of your Aqara devices, and of any older hub
  • Where your router is, and where you would like the hub
  • Which home app you use
  • Whether you have a PoE switch, or a 5 V 2 A USB adapter
  • Your phone with the Aqara Home app signed in, ready for the visit

Should the M3 run on PoE?

PoE suits a hub fixed high on a wall or ceiling, away from a socket:

  • One network cable carries both power, at 48 V 0.27 A, and a wired connection
  • It needs a PoE switch or injector, and the cable is extra-low voltage with no new circuit, so it is not notifiable
  • On USB-C the adapter is yours to supply, since Aqara's box holds only the cable
  • Either way, nothing goes into the consumer unit

Frequently asked questions

Does the Aqara Hub M3 work with Home Assistant?

Yes, through Matter. The M3 is a Matter bridge, so Aqara Zigbee devices on it can show up in Home Assistant's Matter integration, and as a Thread border router it lets Thread devices join. Aqara says third-party Zigbee devices are not supported on the M3 itself.

Does the Aqara Hub M3 need to be near the router?

Yes: Aqara's Amazon UK listing says to place it within 6 m of the router for a stable connection. The pro also weighs where your devices are, since the Zigbee and Thread mesh grows out from the hub through mains-powered routers.

Can I move my devices from an older Aqara hub to the M3?

Yes. Aqara says the M3 can migrate Zigbee devices and automations from older Aqara hubs, and Matter and HomeKit links then need setting up again. The pro does it in the Aqara Home app and tests each device afterwards.

Does the Aqara Hub M3 come with a plug?

No. The box holds a USB-A to USB-C cable, a bracket, screws and anchors, but no power adapter, so you need a 5 V 2 A USB adapter or a PoE switch. JACK does not sell either; an adapter can be added at cost and agreed before booking.

How much does Aqara Hub M3 installation cost in London?

It is a fixed price for your Hub M3, worked out by a vetted pro from the model, a photo of where it is going and what power is there now, and shown in the JACK app before you book. Other devices can go on the same booking for one price. If you would rather pay for time, hourly hire for smart home is typically £45–£95 per hour as a guide.
