Ring Doorbell Installation in London
Updated
Most Ring doorbell jobs in London turn on three things at the door: the power already there, whether the old chime can stay, and the Wi-Fi on the step. A vetted JACK pro reads all three from your photos, fits the battery, wired or peephole model you bought, and leaves it ringing in the hall and on your phone.
In short
Yes: a vetted JACK pro in London fits Ring battery doorbells with no wiring, wires Ring doorbells to existing bell wire where the transformer is strong enough, and otherwise runs them from Ring's 24 V DC Plug-In Adapter in an indoor socket or a new transformer fed from a fused spur. Hardwired battery models can keep a compatible chime ringing, while the Wired Doorbell 2K, 2K Plus and 4K Pro need it bypassed and a plug-in Ring Chime or an Echo instead. You see the fixed price in the JACK app before you book.
Send the model as printed on the box or order (either name is fine), an outside photo of the door and its frame and, if there is a doorbell already, photos of the chime and the transformer label. Not bought one yet? Describe the door in the app first.

Each guide covers how the model is powered and mounted, what the pro does and what to send before booking.
Battery Doorbell 2K installation
Formerly Battery Video Doorbell (2nd Gen): Ring's entry 2K battery doorbell, with a built-in battery, dual-band Wi-Fi and optional hardwiring.
Battery Doorbell 2K Plus installation
Formerly Battery Video Doorbell Plus (2nd Gen): a removable Quick Release battery, wire extenders in the box, and a compatible chime kept.
Battery Doorbell 4K Pro installation
Formerly Battery Video Doorbell Pro (2nd Gen): 4K video, radar motion and Wi-Fi 6, on the Ultra battery, bell wiring or solar.
Wired Doorbell 2K installation
Formerly Wired Video Doorbell (2nd Gen): wired-only and 2.4 GHz only, wants 10 VA or more, and bypasses the old chime with the supplied cable.
Wired Doorbell 2K Plus installation
Formerly Wired Video Doorbell Plus (2nd Gen): it needs 16–24 VAC, so it runs from Ring's Plug-In Adapter or a DIN rail transformer, chime bypassed.
Wired Doorbell 4K Pro installation
Formerly Wired Video Doorbell Pro (3rd Gen): 4K head-to-toe video, powered by Ring's 3rd Gen DIN rail transformer or the Plug-In Adapter.
Wired Doorbell 4K Elite installation
Formerly Wired Doorbell Elite (2nd Gen): 4K, powered by PoE+ over a data cable, flush-mounted, with one relay for a chime or a gate.
Peephole Cam 2K installation
The battery camera that replaces a 12–14 mm door viewer on doors 32.5–60 mm thick, with no drilling or wiring.
Chime Pro installation
Ring's plug-in chime and Wi-Fi extender for Ring devices: the indoor sound when a wired Ring doorbell bypasses the old chime.
Does your Ring doorbell keep the chime in your hall?
It depends on the model family:
- Battery doorbells on 8–24 VAC bell wire can still ring a mechanical or digital chime once the pro sets the chime type in the Ring app; Ring warns that a wrong setting can damage the device
- On the Wired Doorbell 2K the chime is bridged out with the bypass cable from the box, and on the 2K Plus and 4K Pro its wires are disconnected and joined with a wire nut: either way, Ring says the chime will no longer sound
- Ring lists some UK chimes as incompatible even with battery doorbells, including the DETA C3500, C3501 and C3504 and the Friedland D902
- Where the old chime goes quiet, a plug-in Ring Chime or an Echo speaker takes over, and the Chime Pro also extends Wi-Fi for Ring devices
What does the pro check at your front door before drilling?
Each of these can change the plan:
- Signal strength where the doorbell will sit: Ring rates a reading between -60 and -70 as okay and anything from -70 to -80 as poor, and Ring names brick walls among the things that weaken it
- The volts and VA on the transformer, wherever it is hidden: beside the breakers, under the chime cover or in a separate box
- Height and angle: Ring puts a doorbell at 1.2 m, and on most models a wedge kit tilts it up to 15° while a corner kit turns it up to 45°
- The surface: a 6 mm bit and Ring's anchors for masonry, screws alone for timber, and the wall beside a uPVC frame rather than the frame itself, since uPVC door profiles normally have steel reinforcement inside
- Written agreement from the freeholder, managing agent or landlord before drilling in a flat, a leasehold house or a rented home
How will your Ring doorbell be powered?
From the least work to the most:
- Battery: nothing behind the doorbell. The Plus and 4K Pro packs come out to charge, while the Battery Doorbell 2K comes off its bracket
- Solar: Ring's charger fits the battery 2K, 2K Plus and 4K Pro, but Ring says it needs 3–4 hours of direct sunlight every day and is not ideal under a covered porch
- Ring's Plug-In Adapter (2nd Gen): a socket inside the house feeds 24 V DC down a 6 m cable, clipped along the skirting and through the frame or wall
- A new transformer fed from a fused spur on an existing circuit: not notifiable, and written up on a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate
Giving a transformer its own new breaker in the consumer unit makes it a new circuit, so a registered electrician would have to do it; JACK does not book that as part of a doorbell installation.
Ring doorbell transformer UK: which one, and do you need a new one?Can a Ring doorbell go on a flat's front door?
Often, within the building's rules. Front doors that open onto a shared corridor are usually FD30S fire doors, and the gov.uk fire door guidance says changes to them should be made with the agreement of the building's Responsible Person.
- Peephole Cam 2K: Ring's conditions for fire-rated doors are wood construction and a viewer hole between 12.7 and 14.3 mm, and the UK model fits doors 32.5–60 mm thick; you give up the glass viewer while it is fitted
- Ring's troubleshooting guide rules out a glued or cemented viewer, one with no notches on its inner rim, and a door where a letterbox blocks the inside
- Fixing a battery doorbell to the wall next to the door keeps screws out of the fire door; Ring's No-Drill Mount (2nd Gen) fits the battery 2K, 2K Plus and 4K Pro, Ring says no-drill mounts must not go on glass, and its listing for the earlier mount asks for a smooth, even surface and warns off brick
For the street door of the block, Ring Intercom on the handset in your flat is the usual answer.

From Ring's UK help-centre page for each model, with the name it carried before the 2026 rename. The label on your transformer and your photos settle the rest.
| Ring doorbell (previous name) | Power | On existing bell wire | Wi-Fi | Existing chime |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Battery Doorbell 2K (Battery Video Doorbell (2nd Gen)) | Built-in battery, charged by USB-C; solar | 8–24 VAC, 10–40 VA | 2.4 and 5 GHz | Can ring a compatible chime |
| Battery Doorbell 2K Plus (Battery Video Doorbell Plus (2nd Gen)) | Quick Release pack; Plug-In Adapter; solar | 8–24 VAC or 24 VDC, 8–40 VA | 2.4 and 5 GHz | Can ring a compatible chime |
| Battery Doorbell 4K Pro (Battery Video Doorbell Pro (2nd Gen)) | Quick Release Ultra pack; Plug-In Adapter; solar | 8–24 VAC, 5–40 VA | Wi-Fi 6, 2.4 and 5 GHz | Can ring a compatible chime |
| Wired Doorbell 2K (Wired Video Doorbell (2nd Gen)) | Bell wire or Plug-In Adapter | 8–24 VAC, 10–40 VA | 2.4 GHz only | Bypassed |
| Wired Doorbell 2K Plus (Wired Video Doorbell Plus (2nd Gen)) | DIN Rail Transformer (3rd Gen) in the UK hardwired box, or the plug-in version | 16–24 VAC, 10–40 VA | 2.4 and 5 GHz | Bypassed |
| Wired Doorbell 4K Pro (Wired Video Doorbell Pro (3rd Gen)) | As the 2K Plus; the transformer gives 24 V DC at 12 W | 16–24 VAC, 10–40 VA, with 30–40 VA suggested | 2.4 and 5 GHz | Bypassed |
| Wired Doorbell 4K Elite (Wired Doorbell Elite (2nd Gen)) | PoE+ over Cat5e cable or better | Ring's help page lists PoE+ as its power; the relay can run a chime at 8–24 VAC | 2.4 and 5 GHz, or Ethernet | Through the relay, unless it drives a gate |
| Peephole Cam 2K | Quick Release battery only | Not wired | 2.4 GHz only | None |
Ring's UK store does not list the PoE version of the 4K Pro shown on its help page, and Ring lists the older DIN Rail Transformer (2nd Gen) as not compatible with the 4K Pro. Older doorbells, from the Video Doorbell 3 and 4 to the Wired Video Doorbell Pro (once the Video Doorbell Pro 2), are refitted and moved too.
How is Ring installation priced in London?
A vetted pro prices your Ring job from the model and your photos, and the JACK app shows that fixed price before you book.
Power moves the price more than the model name. A battery doorbell or camera on a wall with a good signal is the lightest job. A wired doorbell brings in the bell transformer: if yours gives 8–12 V AC and the doorbell needs 16–24 VAC, the job includes fitting Ring's 24 V Plug-In Adapter or a transformer on a fused spur, plus bypassing the old chime. A floodlight cam is priced as electrical work on your outside-light circuit, including any change to how it is switched.
The wall and the height come next: solid brick, render, a narrow uPVC frame that needs a wedge or corner kit, or a camera 2.5–3 m up that needs a ladder or a tower. On a high eave, your pro can ask another pro on JACK to help through the Pro2Pro feature. Cable runs through brick or to a PoE switch add time, and so does each extra device, though every device can go on one booking for one fixed price.
You buy the device; JACK does not sell any. Accessories the job needs, such as a transformer, a Ring Chime, a wedge kit or an outdoor junction box, are agreed and added at cost before you book, and so is parking where it has to be paid for. Prefer to pay for time? As a guide, hourly hire is typically £45–£95 per hour for smart home work and £55–£110 per hour for electrical work. For a big multi-device job, say a doorbell, three cameras and an alarm kit, a full-day handyman booking is a flat £350–£400 for up to 8 hours on site.
How it works
Step 1
Send the model and a few photos
Say which Ring device you have and photograph where it goes: the door and frame, plus the bell transformer's label and the chime if it is wired, the outside light and its switch for a floodlight cam, or the handset for an intercom.
Step 2
See a fixed price, then pick a slot
A vetted pro works out a fixed price from what you sent, with any accessory agreed at cost. Nothing is booked until you accept it, and you choose the day, including evenings and weekends when pros offer them.
Step 3
Fitted, tested and handed over
Signal checked before drilling, the device fixed and powered, then set up in your Ring app with motion and privacy zones and a test ring or alert while the pro is still with you.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Ring doorbell installation cost in London?
It is a fixed price for your door and model, shown in the JACK app before you book. A battery doorbell with a good signal is the simplest job; a Pro model that needs a new 24 V supply and a bypassed chime takes longer. JACK books pros in London only.
Do I need existing doorbell wiring for a Ring doorbell?
No. Ring's battery doorbells and the Peephole Cam 2K need nothing behind them, and the Wired Doorbell 2K, 2K Plus and 4K Pro can run from Ring's Plug-In Adapter in an indoor socket. Where bell wire is already there, a photo of the transformer label shows what it can power.
Will my Ring doorbell ring inside the house?
Yes, one way or another. A hardwired battery model rings a compatible existing chime, while the wired-only models silence it and hand the job to a plug-in Ring Chime or an Echo.
Is my Wi-Fi strong enough at the front door?
Often, and it is checked before drilling: the Ring app's signal reading at the spot, plus your upload speed, where Ring allows roughly 10 Mbps for a 2K doorbell and 15 Mbps for a 4K one. If the step is a dead spot, a Chime Pro or an extra mesh unit in the hall is agreed with you first.
Can you set up the Ring app as well?
Yes. The doorbell is added to your Ring account, motion zones and alerts are set with you, and a wired chime's type is chosen. Have the Wi-Fi password and your Ring login to hand, and say which other phones should get the alerts.
Is a Ring doorbell allowed on a flat's front door?
Often, but not by drilling the door. Without the building's agreement nothing goes through a fire door onto a shared corridor, which is why the Peephole Cam 2K or a battery doorbell fixed to the wall alongside are the usual routes in a flat.
The doorbell is still in its box. Do you just fit it?
Yes. JACK does not sell devices, so the pro fits the one you bought. Check the box first: the UK hardwired 2K Plus and 4K Pro have Ring's DIN Rail Transformer (3rd Gen) packed in, while the Battery Doorbell 2K arrives without the USB-C cable its first charge needs.
Can you move my Ring doorbell to a new house?
Yes, within London. The pro takes it down, fills the holes and fits it at the new address, and you then update the address in the Ring app, the step Ring's guide to moving house sets out. A hardwired doorbell may need a different power route at the new door.
