Ring Intercom Installation in London: Flats and Blocks
Updated
In a London block the street door is often the one that matters: couriers who cannot get in, friends buzzing while you are out. Ring Intercom puts your phone on the handset you already have. A vetted JACK pro checks your handset and the building's rules first, then wires and tests the Audio or Video model you bought.
In short
Yes: JACK pros in London add Ring Intercom to the door entry handset in your flat, the Audio model for an audio handset, the Video model for a video handset with a screen. Both are battery powered and connect into the handset's own terminals, so the handset stays and keeps working, and both release the building's street door rather than your flat door. Run your handset through Ring's compatibility checker and clear it with whoever manages the building; the JACK app then shows a fixed price before you book.
Send a front photo of the handset and any label on it, what Ring's compatibility checker said, and whether the managing agent, freeholder or council has replied. Mention it if the building has more than one entrance.

Each guide covers how the model is powered and mounted, what the pro does and what to send before booking.
Intercom Audio installation
The battery add-on wired into your flat's audio handset, so you can answer the street door and buzz visitors in from the Ring app.
Intercom Video installation
The add-on for video door entry handsets: a picture from the building entrance, two-way talk and unlocking in the Ring app.
What does Ring Intercom do, and what can't it do?
Ring's UK support pages are clear on the limits, and they are worth knowing before you buy:
- It adds to the handset rather than replacing it, so the handset keeps working for anyone who prefers it
- It releases the building's entrance door, the one your handset's button opens, and never the door to your flat
- No Ring plan is needed for the basics: unlocking from your phone, talking to the visitor, Alexa, and Auto-Verify for Amazon deliveries
- On a video handset the Audio model gives sound and unlock but no picture; the picture needs Ring Intercom Video
- Each runs on a rechargeable Quick Release pack and joins 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, so no mains wiring is involved; where a system only releases the door during a live call, Ring's Ring-to-Open setting is used
Who has to agree before your handset is touched?
The handset hangs in your hall, but in most London blocks it is part of the communal door entry system:
- Islington says it is responsible for handsets in its homes linked to communal door entry, and Ealing treats both system and handset as the council's
- The Housing Ombudsman has looked at a London case where the landlord's policy covered the communal system and the handset in each home
- In a private block the lease decides, so ask the managing agent who owns the handset and the wiring behind it
- Remote unlocking changes how the main door opens for every resident, and Ring's FAQ says your residence might have rules limiting installation and use
Ask in writing and send the reply with your booking; renters need the landlord's consent too. The wiring is photographed first and the original wires stay in their terminals, so the change can be undone.
Ring devices in flats and rented homes: leases, fire doors and consentCompatibility is settled before the booking, not on the day
Ring says Ring Intercom works with most audio intercom systems, but the exact handset model is what counts:
- Ring says the model number is typically printed behind the front cover, near the wiring or on the control board, and its guide shows where makers such as Videx, Bticino, Comelit, Urmet and Aiphone print it
- A maker named in that guide is no proof of compatibility: the model goes into Ring's compatibility checker
- The Entryphone Company, a London maker, is not in the guide; if yours is missing too, Ring asks you to contact its Intercom support team with a photo of the outside of the handset and one of the inside with the wiring and terminal markings clear
Your own front door and the street door are different jobs
Ring Intercom answers the building entrance. For the door into your flat:
- Peephole Cam 2K sits in the existing viewer hole with no wiring; Ring allows it on wooden fire-rated doors where that hole measures 12.7 to 14.3 mm
- A battery doorbell beside the door, where the building allows it, with nothing drilled through a flat entrance fire door without the Responsible Person's agreement
Got a house with its own entry panel or gate? Ring has two other routes
Ring Intercom is made for the handset in a flat. A house with an entry panel at the gate or porch is a different job:
- Where an old entry panel has been taken out, Ring's Intercom Kit for Video Doorbells gives a Ring doorbell a plate to mount on; Ring says to switch off the old intercom's power first and marks the kit for professional installation
- The Wired Doorbell 4K Elite's relay can work an existing gate or door release up to 24 V AC or DC at 2 A, where a relay access system is already in place, but then it cannot also ring a chime
- Ring's Wired Doorbell 2K guide forbids connecting a Ring doorbell to a DC-powered intercom
Which Ring Intercom, if either, suits your entry phone?
Match your handset here, then confirm the exact model in Ring's compatibility checker.
| What is on your wall | Ring device | What you get | Check first |
|---|---|---|---|
| An audio handset that passes Ring's checker | Ring Intercom Audio | Answer, talk and buzz visitors in from the Ring app; voicemail with a plan | The building's written consent |
| A video handset with a screen, and you want the picture | Ring Intercom Video | One-way video from the panel, two-way talk and unlock; recordings with a plan once switched on | The checker result, and room beside the handset for the 10.9 cm square unit |
| A video handset, and sound and unlock are enough | Ring Intercom Audio | Talk and unlock, no picture | The checker result for that handset |
| A handset whose maker is not in Ring's model guide | Neither, until Ring confirms | Nothing to fit yet | Photos of the outside of the handset and of its wiring sent to Ring Intercom support |
| Several entrance doors on one system | Either, depending on the system | Ring says multiple entrances depend on how the system works | Every entrance named in your request, so each is tested |
| A house with its own panel at the gate or porch | Not Ring Intercom: the Intercom Kit for Video Doorbells, or the 4K Elite on a gate relay | A Ring doorbell in place of the panel, or remote gate release | Power to the old intercom off first |

How is Ring installation priced in London?
A vetted pro prices your Ring job from the model and your photos, and the JACK app shows that fixed price before you book.
Power moves the price more than the model name. A battery doorbell or camera on a wall with a good signal is the lightest job. A wired doorbell brings in the bell transformer: if yours gives 8–12 V AC and the doorbell needs 16–24 VAC, the job includes fitting Ring's 24 V Plug-In Adapter or a transformer on a fused spur, plus bypassing the old chime. A floodlight cam is priced as electrical work on your outside-light circuit, including any change to how it is switched.
The wall and the height come next: solid brick, render, a narrow uPVC frame that needs a wedge or corner kit, or a camera 2.5–3 m up that needs a ladder or a tower. On a high eave, your pro can ask another pro on JACK to help through the Pro2Pro feature. Cable runs through brick or to a PoE switch add time, and so does each extra device, though every device can go on one booking for one fixed price.
You buy the device; JACK does not sell any. Accessories the job needs, such as a transformer, a Ring Chime, a wedge kit or an outdoor junction box, are agreed and added at cost before you book, and so is parking where it has to be paid for. Prefer to pay for time? As a guide, hourly hire is typically £45–£95 per hour for smart home work and £55–£110 per hour for electrical work. For a big multi-device job, say a doorbell, three cameras and an alarm kit, a full-day handyman booking is a flat £350–£400 for up to 8 hours on site.
How it works
Step 1
Send the model and a few photos
Say which Ring device you have and photograph where it goes: the door and frame, plus the bell transformer's label and the chime if it is wired, the outside light and its switch for a floodlight cam, or the handset for an intercom.
Step 2
See a fixed price, then pick a slot
A vetted pro works out a fixed price from what you sent, with any accessory agreed at cost. Nothing is booked until you accept it, and you choose the day, including evenings and weekends when pros offer them.
Step 3
Fitted, tested and handed over
Signal checked before drilling, the device fixed and powered, then set up in your Ring app with motion and privacy zones and a test ring or alert while the pro is still with you.
Frequently asked questions
Can Ring Intercom let couriers into my building when I'm out?
Yes, in two ways. You can answer the entrance panel and unlock from the Ring app wherever you are, and Auto-Verify lets verified Amazon delivery drivers in without you answering. It works on the building's entrance only, so a parcel still stops in the communal hall or at your flat door.
My building has two entrances. Will Ring Intercom open both?
It depends on how the system is wired. Ring has a set-up for multiple entrances and says the answer varies by system; buildings with several doors may default to Ring-to-Open, where the door can only be released during a live call. Name every entrance when you book.
Can I take Ring Intercom with me when I move out?
Yes. The unit comes off its tape or screws and its lead comes out of the handset terminals, which still hold their original wires. Keep the photos taken before installation to show the handset as it was.
Can a Ring Video Doorbell connect to my building's intercom?
Not in a typical block. The street panel belongs to the building, and Ring says not to wire its doorbells to a DC-powered intercom system, so in a flat the route is Ring Intercom on your handset.
How much does Ring Intercom installation cost in London?
It is a fixed price in the JACK app, worked out from your handset photos. The time goes into opening the handset, wiring it as the Ring app shows for that model and testing from the street panel, so several entrances or a Ring-to-Open system add to it.
