Is My Intercom Compatible With Ring Intercom?
Updated
Ring Intercom replaces nothing in your building. It wires into the handset on your wall, so whether it works depends on that handset's make, model and wiring. Here is how to find out before you buy, what Ring's own tools do and do not tell you, and what to photograph so a pro can confirm the fit.
In short
Ring says Ring Intercom is compatible with most audio intercom systems, and the way to check your exact handset is its model number in Ring's online compatibility checker. An audio handset takes Ring Intercom Audio and a compatible video handset takes Ring Intercom Video; Audio on a video handset gives talk and unlock but no picture. A handset missing from Ring's model-number guide is not proven incompatible: Ring asks for photos of the entrance panel and handset wiring through Ring Intercom support, and a JACK pro in London fits it once the answer is yes.

What does Ring say about compatibility?
Four statements in Ring's UK help centre settle most questions:
- Ring Intercom is compatible with most audio intercom systems, and you check yours at ring.com/intercom-compatibility-checker before buying
- It is not a replacement for your handset but an additional component, so the handset stays on the wall and stays in use
- On a video intercom, Ring Intercom Audio cannot stream or record video; that needs Ring Intercom Video and a compatible video handset
- It opens the entrance to your building, not the door of your flat
The table of makers in Ring's model-number guide shows where each maker prints its model number. It is a finding aid, not a list of handsets that work.
Ring Intercom Audio installationAudio or video: which Ring Intercom does your handset need?
Look at the handset on your wall before you buy:
- No screen, just a receiver or speaker and a door-release button: an audio handset, the kind Ring Intercom Audio is made for
- A screen showing the street door: a video handset, which needs Ring Intercom Video to bring that picture to your phone
- Ring Intercom Video came to the UK in late 2025, so older advice that only an audio model exists is out of date
How do you find the handset's model number?
Ring's set-up guide starts by taking the handset's front cover off and reading what is printed inside:
- Depending on the model, the cover is held by a screw, released by a hidden tab, or prised off with a flat-head screwdriver
- Ring's model-number guide shows where the model is printed for makers including Bticino, Comelit, Fermax, Urmet and Videx
- Enter that model in Ring's compatibility checker and keep a screenshot of the result
- Photograph the terminals and wire markings before anything is touched: Ring support and the pro need the same picture
The handset usually belongs to the building, so ask the managing agent before the cover comes off.
What if your handset is not in Ring's guide?
Absence from Ring's model-number table does not prove a handset will not work, and presence does not prove it will. For anything the guide does not cover, Ring's route is its support team:
- Take one photo of the street-door panel and one of the handset's wiring, close enough to read the terminal markings
- Send both to Ring Intercom support, whose UK line is 0808 196 5767, open 8am to 8pm, and wait for the answer before booking
- Some London blocks use makers that are not in Ring's table at all, such as The Entryphone Company, a London door entry maker; that is a reason to ask Ring, not a verdict
Ring does not promise that an unlisted handset works, and a JACK pro will not cut, re-terminate or bridge the building's wiring to force a fit.
What else decides whether it works in your block?
A handset can pass the checker and still depend on these:
- The Ring Intercom version: the 2022 model (5F34E9) ships with three cables for different handset types and the 2024 model (5F99F2) with one universal cable, and the app's wiring diagram differs
- How the entrance releases: some systems unlock only during a live call from the street panel, which Ring's Ring-to-Open setting handles
- A 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi signal at the handset, as Ring Intercom connects on 2.4 GHz only
- A handset to connect to: Ring's set-up begins at a wired handset inside the flat, so if your flat has none, ask Ring support before buying
Which photos let the pro confirm the fit?
JACK covers London only. A pro prices Ring Intercom from photos, and the fixed price is shown in the JACK app before you book. Send:
- The handset from the front, and with the cover off if the building allows
- The model label, plus the checker's result or Ring support's reply
- The Ring Intercom box or its cables, so the pro knows which version you have
- The managing agent's or freeholder's consent, or a note that you have asked
You buy the Ring Intercom yourself, as JACK sells no devices. A spare Quick Release battery, if you want one, is agreed and added at cost before you book.
Book a Ring Intercom installationWhat does each check tell you?
Five checks before you buy or book Ring Intercom, and the limit of each:
| Check | What it tells you | What it does not |
|---|---|---|
| Ring's compatibility checker | Whether Ring supports your exact handset model | How your entrance releases |
| Ring's model-number guide | Where your maker prints the model number | Whether that model works with Ring |
| Photos to Ring Intercom support | An answer for handsets the guide does not cover | A guarantee for unlisted models |
| The handset: screen or no screen | Whether you need Intercom Audio or Video | Whether the wiring is compatible |
| The managing agent's reply | Whether you may connect to the building's system | Anything technical |
How is Ring installation priced in London?
A vetted pro prices your Ring job from the model and your photos, and the JACK app shows that fixed price before you book.
Power moves the price more than the model name. A battery doorbell or camera on a wall with a good signal is the lightest job. A wired doorbell brings in the bell transformer: if yours gives 8–12 V AC and the doorbell needs 16–24 VAC, the job includes fitting Ring's 24 V Plug-In Adapter or a transformer on a fused spur, plus bypassing the old chime. A floodlight cam is priced as electrical work on your outside-light circuit, including any change to how it is switched.
The wall and the height come next: solid brick, render, a narrow uPVC frame that needs a wedge or corner kit, or a camera 2.5–3 m up that needs a ladder or a tower. On a high eave, your pro can ask another pro on JACK to help through the Pro2Pro feature. Cable runs through brick or to a PoE switch add time, and so does each extra device, though every device can go on one booking for one fixed price.
You buy the device; JACK does not sell any. Accessories the job needs, such as a transformer, a Ring Chime, a wedge kit or an outdoor junction box, are agreed and added at cost before you book, and so is parking where it has to be paid for. Prefer to pay for time? As a guide, hourly hire is typically £45–£95 per hour for smart home work and £55–£110 per hour for electrical work. For a big multi-device job, say a doorbell, three cameras and an alarm kit, a full-day handyman booking is a flat £350–£400 for up to 8 hours on site.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a list of handsets that work with Ring Intercom?
Not one we found in Ring's UK help centre: its table of makers shows where model numbers are printed, not which handsets work. Ring points you to its online compatibility checker for your exact model, and to Ring Intercom support, with photos of the entrance panel and handset wiring, if the model is not covered.
Does Ring Intercom work without Wi-Fi?
No. It connects to your router on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and you answer it in the Ring app, so the signal at the handset matters. The handset keeps working as before, because Ring Intercom is an add-on rather than a replacement.
Can I replace my intercom panel with a Ring doorbell instead?
Only in specific cases, and never on a shared entrance without the freeholder's agreement. Ring sells an Intercom Kit for Video Doorbells to replace an existing intercom with a Ring doorbell; its fitting guide warns that installation by a qualified electrician may be required in your area and says to turn off the intercom's power first. Ring also says not to wire a Ring doorbell to a DC-powered intercom system.
Does the intercom handset in my flat belong to me?
Usually not: it tends to belong to the building, even though it hangs inside your flat. A Housing Ombudsman case about Tower Hamlets Homes, for example, involved a landlord policy covering the handsets in residents' homes as well as the communal system. Check your lease or tenancy and ask the managing agent before anything is wired.
