Ring Intercom Audio Installation in London
Updated
Also called simply Ring Intercom: Ring's wiring guide names its two hardware versions Ring Intercom (2022) and Ring Intercom (2024), and the UK store sells it as Ring Intercom Audio. It runs on a rechargeable battery, connects to the terminals inside the audio handset already on your wall and sits beside it, so you can talk to a visitor at the building entrance and let them in from your phone. A vetted JACK pro opens the handset, wires it the way the Ring app shows for your model and tests it from the street, for a fixed price you see before you book.
In short
Yes, a JACK pro in London fits Ring Intercom Audio to a compatible audio door entry handset: it runs on a rechargeable Quick Release battery, so no mains supply or new cabling is needed, and its lead connects into the handset's existing terminals with the original wires left in place. It is an additional component, not a replacement for your handset, and it unlocks the building entrance, not your flat. Check your handset in Ring's compatibility checker and ask your managing agent first, because the handset usually belongs to the building's door entry system.

Power, Wi-Fi and wiring facts come from Ring's UK help centre and UK store, linked beside each fact. Most Ring models changed name in the summer of 2026, so an older box may show a previous name: check the model on your box or order and send it with your request. Last checked 31 October 2026.
How the Intercom Audio is powered and mounted
Ring Intercom Audio has no mains connection at all. It runs on Ring's Quick Release Battery Pack, which comes out of the unit to charge, so a spare pack lets you swap rather than wait. It talks to your router on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only, which matters in mansion blocks where the handset hangs in a hallway far from the router: the signal is checked at the handset before anything is wired.
The unit fixes to the wall next to your handset, either on its ready-applied tape or with screws, and a lead runs from it into the handset itself. Which lead, and which terminal each wire lands on, depends on your handset model and on which Ring Intercom you bought: the 2022 version came with three cables for analogue, digital and hybrid systems, while the 2024 version uses one universal cable. The Ring app shows the wiring for the model you select.
Once connected, a call from the street panel reaches your phone and you can talk and buzz the visitor in. Some door entry systems only release the door while a call from the entrance is live; Ring handles these with its Ring-to-Open setting, which Ring says may be the default in buildings with several entrance doors.
What the pro checks first
- The handset's brand and model, run through Ring's compatibility checker before any wire is moved
- Whether the handset is audio-only or has a screen, because on a video handset this model gives sound and unlock without a picture
- Written agreement from the managing agent, freeholder or council where the handset belongs to the building's door entry system
- A 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi reading on a phone held where the unit will sit
- Which Ring Intercom is in the box, 2022 or 2024, since the cables differ
- Whether your entrance releases on a direct command or only during a live call (Ring-to-Open)
What the pro does on the Intercom Audio
- Photographs the handset's wiring before touching it, so the original layout can always be put back
- Lands the Ring lead on the terminals the app names for your model, leaving every original wire where it was
- Cleans the wall with methylated spirit and presses the tape mount for 30 seconds, or screws the unit to brick or concrete instead
- Tucks the lead neatly between unit and handset and refits the handset cover
- Tests from the street panel: two-way talk, an unlock from the app, then Ring-to-Open if your system needs it
- Sets up Auto-Verify for Amazon deliveries if you want couriers let in
How the Intercom Audio installation goes
- 1Confirm the handset model in Ring's checker and that the building's consent is in hand
- 2Take off the handset's front cover: depending on the model it is held by a screw or a hidden tab, or is prised off with a flat-head screwdriver
- 3Read the brand and model inside and photograph the terminals and wire markings
- 4Choose that model in the Ring app and follow its wiring diagram for the Ring lead
- 5Connect the lead to the handset terminals alongside the original wires, then close the cover
- 6Fix the Ring unit beside the handset on tape or screws
- 7Join the unit to your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and make a test call from the entrance panel
Before you book: what to send
- A photo of the handset from the front, plus any label on its side or back
- The handset brand and model if you can read them, and what Ring's checker said
- The managing agent's or freeholder's reply, or a note that you are still waiting for one
- Which Ring Intercom version you have, with the battery fully charged
- Whether your building has more than one entrance door
Does the managing agent need to agree before Ring Intercom is fitted?
Usually, yes. The handset sits inside your flat, but it is normally part of the building's communal door entry system, and remote unlocking changes how the main entrance can be opened for everyone who lives there.
- Islington and Ealing councils both list the door entry handsets in their leaseholders' flats as the council's responsibility, as part of the communal door entry system
- In private blocks it depends on the lease: a London block manager gives the example of a handset fault falling to the leaseholder while the system and its wiring stay with the building's management
- Ring's own FAQ says your residence might have rules limiting the installation and use of Ring Intercom, and asks you to check them
- The fit is reversible: the unit comes off its tape or screws, and the handset's original wires never leave their terminals
Ring's set-up steps all happen at the handset inside your flat; nothing on the entrance panel outside is touched.
Where do you find your intercom's model number?
Ring Intercom is wired differently for each handset, so the brand and model come first. This table says where to look. It is not a list of handsets that work: that answer comes from Ring's compatibility checker.
| What you need | Where to find it | What to do with it |
|---|---|---|
| Handset brand and model | Behind the handset's front cover, which Ring's guide takes off by a screw, a hidden tab or prising with a flat-head screwdriver, depending on the model | Enter it in Ring's compatibility checker, then select it in the Ring app during set-up |
| Where your maker prints it | Ring's model-number guide shows the spot for Aiphone, Auta, Bell System, Bitron, Bticino, Came BPT, Comelit, Elcom, Elvox, Extel, Farfisa, Fermax, Gira, Golmar, LT Teranneo, Ritto, Siedle, SKS Kinkel, STR Elektronik, TCS, Tegui, Urmet and Videx handsets | Use it to find the label. A maker appearing in the guide does not mean your handset works with Ring |
| A maker or model the guide does not cover | Not in Ring's guide, or the label is missing or worn away | Photograph the entrance panel outside and the handset's wiring with terminal markings visible, and send them to Ring Intercom support |
| Your Ring Intercom version | Count the cables in the box: three (A, B and C) means the 2022 version, 5F34E9; one universal C cable means the 2024 version, 5F99F2 | Tell the pro which one you have, because the wiring differs |

Full pricing guide for Ring installationFrequently asked questions
Does Ring Intercom Audio replace my intercom handset?
No. Ring describes it as an additional component that upgrades the handset you already have. The handset stays on the wall and keeps working as before; the Ring unit sits beside it and adds answering and unlocking from your phone.
Can Ring Intercom Audio open my flat's front door?
No. It works the building's entrance door through your handset, the same door your handset's release button opens. Your own flat door is not connected to it.
My Ring Intercom came with three cables. Which one is used?
Three cables means the 2022 version (model 5F34E9): cable A is for analogue 6-wire handsets, B for digital 4-wire and C for hybrid 12-wire. Select your handset model in the Ring app and it shows the wiring to follow. The 2024 version (5F99F2) has a single universal C cable instead.
Does Ring Intercom Audio need a subscription?
Not for the basics: Ring says most features are available without a subscription. Its plan FAQ lists voicemail and Modes as what a Ring Solo, Multi or Pro plan adds to Intercom Audio, and Ring's UK store says a plan also saves audio calls to the cloud for up to 180 days.
How much does Ring Intercom Audio installation cost in London?
It is a fixed price for your Intercom Audio, worked out by a vetted pro from the model, a photo of where it is going and what power is there now, and shown in the JACK app before you book. Other devices can go on the same booking for one price. If you would rather pay for time, hourly hire for smart home is typically £45–£95 per hour as a guide.
