Ring Alarm Installation in London

Updated

Ring Alarm is a plug-in base station with battery sensors, so there is no wiring to run and the skill is in the layout. A vetted JACK pro in London decides with you which doors and windows get sensors and where the motion detectors go, fixes and tests every part, and is plain about what Ring Alarm does when it goes off.

In short

Yes: a vetted JACK pro in London installs Ring Alarm (2nd Gen) with no electrical work, since the base station and keypad plug in, the sensors run on batteries, and the Outdoor Siren takes batteries, Ring's Plug-In Adapter or solar. In the UK Ring Alarm is self-monitored: it sounds its sirens, alerts your phone and, with a Ring plan, its Alarm Calls ring up to three people you choose. Ring's UK pages do not say it contacts the police, it has no police Unique Reference Number, and Ring's Guard Response does not cover London.

Send the kit size and any extra parts, a photo of every outside door and ground-floor window, and say which room the router is in. If you have a pet, give its weight: it changes where the motion detectors go.

What is in a Ring Alarm kit?

Ring's UK help centre lists three Ring Alarm (2nd Gen) kits, Small (5 pieces), Medium (7) and Large (10), each built from a Base Station, Keypad, Contact Sensors, Motion Detectors and a Range Extender. Sold separately:

  • The Glass Break Sensor, the Panic Button (a 3-second press) and the Outdoor Contact Sensor, rated IP66 for gates
  • The Alarm Outdoor Siren, louder than 100 dB at 1 m

Ring Alarm Pro does not appear in Ring's UK store or help centre, and parts from the US will not pair: Ring says UK and EEA Ring Alarm devices use Z-Wave on 868 MHz, US and Canadian ones 908 or 916 MHz.

What happens when Ring Alarm goes off?

Ring Alarm in the UK is self-monitored, and the response depends on your plan:

  • Without a plan: the sirens, and a notification on your phone
  • With a Ring plan and Alarm Calls switched on: automated calls to up to three contacts you choose, one at a time until someone answers, while a panic alarm calls all three at once
  • Cellular Backup, on a compatible plan, keeps the base station online through Ring's AT&T SIM if the broadband drops; Ring says only that SIM works
  • Ring offers Professional Monitoring only in the US and Canada, and its Guard Response covers Birmingham, Manchester, Cardiff and Bristol, not London

Nothing on Ring's UK pages says Ring contacts the police. The contact who answers the call decides what happens next.

When do you need a police-response alarm instead?

Police in England respond to monitored alarms under the National Police Chiefs' Council policy, not to a siren alone:

  • A police Unique Reference Number (URN) is issued only for alarms installed, maintained and monitored by companies inspected by NSI or SSAIB
  • ProtectUK, the police protective-security site, says the police will not attend an audible-only alarm unless other evidence, such as a report of breaking glass, backs it up
  • Some home insurance policies require an alarm fitted and maintained under contract with an NSI or SSAIB member; Ring Alarm does not meet that, whoever fits it

If you need police response, use an NSI or SSAIB inspected company. Ring Alarm suits you when alerts to your phone and a few trusted contacts are enough.

The Outdoor Siren runs on batteries, a plug-in adapter or a low-voltage feed

It is the one part fixed outside, usually high on the front where it can be seen:

  • Three D cells, rated by Ring for up to three years, Ring's Plug-In Adapter (2nd Gen), a Quick Release battery or a solar panel, or 9–28 V at its terminal
  • Polarity matters on the Plug-In Adapter, unlike a Ring doorbell, which connects either way round
  • The tamper arm must touch the wall, so the siren goes on a flat, sound surface; its Dusk-to-Dawn lighting needs more than one power source
  • It sounds for 3 minutes by default, adjustable from 1 to 10; councils can silence an alarm sounding more than 20 minutes non-stop, or on and off for over an hour

Planning permission is not normally needed for an alarm box, but check with your council on a listed building or in a conservation area.

What does each Ring Alarm (2nd Gen) part need?

Power and placement from Ring's UK product pages, technical specifications and installation guide, with what the pro checks.

Ring Alarm on its own, or an alarm with police response?

Two different kinds of system: what each does when it goes off, and who fits it.

How is Ring installation priced in London?

A vetted pro prices your Ring job from the model and your photos, and the JACK app shows that fixed price before you book.

Power moves the price more than the model name. A battery doorbell or camera on a wall with a good signal is the lightest job. A wired doorbell brings in the bell transformer: if yours gives 8–12 V AC and the doorbell needs 16–24 VAC, the job includes fitting Ring's 24 V Plug-In Adapter or a transformer on a fused spur, plus bypassing the old chime. A floodlight cam is priced as electrical work on your outside-light circuit, including any change to how it is switched.

The wall and the height come next: solid brick, render, a narrow uPVC frame that needs a wedge or corner kit, or a camera 2.5–3 m up that needs a ladder or a tower. On a high eave, your pro can ask another pro on JACK to help through the Pro2Pro feature. Cable runs through brick or to a PoE switch add time, and so does each extra device, though every device can go on one booking for one fixed price.

You buy the device; JACK does not sell any. Accessories the job needs, such as a transformer, a Ring Chime, a wedge kit or an outdoor junction box, are agreed and added at cost before you book, and so is parking where it has to be paid for. Prefer to pay for time? As a guide, hourly hire is typically £45–£95 per hour for smart home work and £55–£110 per hour for electrical work. For a big multi-device job, say a doorbell, three cameras and an alarm kit, a full-day handyman booking is a flat £350–£400 for up to 8 hours on site.

How it works

Step 1

Send the model and a few photos

Say which Ring device you have and photograph where it goes: the door and frame, plus the bell transformer's label and the chime if it is wired, the outside light and its switch for a floodlight cam, or the handset for an intercom.

Step 2

See a fixed price, then pick a slot

A vetted pro works out a fixed price from what you sent, with any accessory agreed at cost. Nothing is booked until you accept it, and you choose the day, including evenings and weekends when pros offer them.

Step 3

Fitted, tested and handed over

Signal checked before drilling, the device fixed and powered, then set up in your Ring app with motion and privacy zones and a test ring or alert while the pro is still with you.

Frequently asked questions

Will the police come if my Ring Alarm goes off?

Not because of the alarm itself. Ring Alarm has no police URN, and the police do not attend audible-only alarms without other evidence. It alerts your phone and, with a Ring plan, your chosen contacts.

Is Ring Guard Response available in London?

No. When we checked on 31 October 2026, Ring listed Guard Response for Birmingham, Manchester, Cardiff and Bristol only. Its guards check the outside of a property and do not go in.

Will my home insurer accept a Ring Alarm?

Check your policy schedule. Some policies only ask whether an alarm is fitted, but an alarm condition requiring an NSI or SSAIB installed and maintained system is not met by Ring Alarm, so tell your insurer before relying on it.

Does Ring Alarm keep working if the broadband or power goes off?

In a power cut the base station's backup battery runs for up to 24 hours. If the broadband drops, Cellular Backup keeps it connected on a compatible Ring plan; without one, alerts depend on your broadband.

Can you fit Ring Alarm parts I bought abroad?

Only parts built for the UK or EEA. A sensor made for the US or Canada uses a different Z-Wave frequency (908 or 916 MHz rather than 868 MHz) and will not pair with a UK base station. Send a photo of each label if you are not sure.

How much does Ring Alarm installation cost in London?

It is fixed in the JACK app from your kit list and photos: the number of sensors, how many floors they span, any Range Extender and the siren's position set the time. With no electrical work it books as smart home work, typically £45–£95 per hour as a guide.
