Do You Need an Electrician to Install Ring?

Updated

Ring's pages say a qualified electrician 'may be required in your area', which leaves many people unsure. In England the answer is set by Part P of the Building Regulations, and for most Ring jobs it is no. This guide sets out the few jobs that do need a registered electrician, and the paperwork the rest should come with.

In short

Not for most Ring jobs. In England, battery doorbells, plug-in cameras, a wired doorbell on existing bell wiring and a floodlight cam replacing an outside light on the same circuit are not notifiable under Part P, so a JACK pro in London can fit them, with a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate where the mains is touched. A new circuit, a consumer unit replacement or work near a bath or shower is notifiable and needs a registered electrician, and JACK does not book that as part of the job.

What does Part P actually control?

Regulation 12(6A) of the Building Regulations 2010 makes three kinds of electrical work in a home notifiable in England:

  • Installing a new circuit
  • Replacing a consumer unit (the fuse box)
  • Any addition or alteration to existing circuits in a special location: in a room with a bath or shower, the space from the floor to 2.25 m (or the shower head, if higher) and 0.6 m out from the bath or tray edge, or 1.2 m from the shower head where there is no tray; or a room with a swimming pool or sauna heater

Everything else is not notifiable, including additions and alterations to existing circuits elsewhere, and replacements and repairs anywhere. It still has to be safe: Part P requires reasonable provision for safety, and Approved Document P says the work should be designed, installed and tested to BS 7671, whose current edition is BS 7671:2018+A4:2026. The Planning Portal adds that the rules do not restrict who may do the work.

Why does Ring say 'qualified electrician'?

Ring's support pages serve many countries, so its UK pages carry cautious, general wording. These are Ring's words, not a UK rule:

  • Wired Doorbell 4K Pro: 'Hardwired: Installation by a qualified electrician may be required in your area'
  • Floodlight Cam Wired Plus and Wired Pro: 'permits plus professional installation may be required by law', and 'DO NOT INSTALL if a working earth connection is not available'
  • Ring's UK store and install guides recommend professional installation for its wired doorbells and floodlight cams
  • Ring's 4K Pro guide: if you are unsure which breaker to switch off, 'turn off the master breaker or contact an electrician'

What English law asks is that notifiable work is notified and that all work is safe. That is why the table below decides who you book, while Ring's own conditions, such as the working earth for a floodlight, still apply.

What does the pro check before touching the mains?

For the jobs a JACK pro can do, these checks come before any tools:

  • The circuit is isolated at the consumer unit and proved dead before a cover comes off
  • Floodlights: a working earth at the outside light, since older London lighting circuits sometimes have none and Ring rules out installing without one
  • Floodlights: no dimmer or timer on the feed, as Ring requires; a separate timer or sensor switch comes out, and a wall switch is left on or bridged so the cam has a permanent live
  • RCD protection on the circuit being worked on, and whether the existing circuit is in good enough condition to add to
  • The route of any new cable, so it avoids fire doors, communal walls and anything the lease or tenancy rules out

Jobs JACK does not book, and what to do instead

If your plan needs any of these, it is a registered electrician's job, and JACK does not book it as part of a Ring installation:

  • A new circuit from the consumer unit, including a transformer on a spare way
  • A new or replacement consumer unit
  • Any new point or change inside a bathroom's special location
  • Notifiable work in a residential block of 18 m or 7 storeys and up, which also needs Building Safety Regulator approval unless it is done under a competent person scheme

Your options are an electrician registered with one of the Part P competent person schemes listed on GOV.UK, or, before work starts, telling a building control body or appointing a registered third-party certifier. Once that circuit exists, a JACK pro can come back and fit the Ring device on it.

What should you send to book the parts JACK pros do?

Every JACK pro is vetted, and insured pros are shown first. JACK works in London only. To price a floodlight or wired job, send:

  • A photo of the existing outside light, and of the switch that controls it indoors
  • A photo of the consumer unit with its cover closed, showing the labels and any RCD
  • The Ring model, and anything else you want on the same booking
  • In a rented home, the landlord's consent; the landlord should also get a copy of any electrical certificate

The client buys the device, and JACK does not sell any. A junction box, fused spur or transformer the job needs is agreed and added at cost before you book, within the fixed price shown in the app.

Which Ring jobs need a registered electrician?

England, in a house or flat. Notifiable means building control must be told, either through a registered electrician's scheme or by you before work starts.

Ring jobNotifiable under Part P?Can a JACK pro do it?Paperwork to expect
Battery doorbell, battery camera or Peephole CamNo: there is no electrical installation workYesNone for the electrics
Plug-in camera, Ring Chime, or a doorbell on Ring's Plug-In Adapter in an existing socketNo: nothing on the fixed wiring changesYesNone for the electrics
Wired doorbell on the existing bell transformerNo: extra-low voltage on an existing circuitYesNone if the 230 V side is not touched
Replacing the bell transformer like-for-like on the same supplyNo: it is a replacementYesMinor Electrical Installation Works Certificate
A transformer or camera supply from a new fused spur off an existing circuitNo: a spur added to an existing circuit outside a bathroomYesMinor Electrical Installation Works Certificate
Floodlight cam in place of an existing outside light, on the same circuitNo: a replacement, and outdoor additions to existing circuits stopped being notifiable on 6 April 2013Yes, where there is a working earthMinor Electrical Installation Works Certificate
PoE camera, or Wired Doorbell 4K Elite on PoE+, cabled from a PoE switchNo: extra-low voltage data cablingYesNone for the electrics; BS 7671 now has a section on Power over Ethernet (Section 716)
Ring Alarm kit, or Ring Intercom on your flat's handsetNo: plug-in and battery devices, and the handset's own low-voltage wiringYes, with the building's consent for the intercomNone for the electrics
A transformer on a new way in the consumer unit, or any new circuit for cameras or floodlightsYes: treated as a new circuitNo, and JACK does not book itElectrical Installation Certificate and a Building Regulations compliance certificate, from a registered electrician
Anything near a bath or shower, or a new consumer unitYesNo, and JACK does not book itAs for a new circuit

Based on Approved Document P (2013) paragraphs 2.5 to 2.8, the IET's Part P questions and answers, and the Planning Portal. JACK treats a transformer on a spare consumer-unit way as a new circuit, the cautious reading of the IET's guidance.

How is Ring installation priced in London?

A vetted pro prices your Ring job from the model and your photos, and the JACK app shows that fixed price before you book.

Power moves the price more than the model name. A battery doorbell or camera on a wall with a good signal is the lightest job. A wired doorbell brings in the bell transformer: if yours gives 8–12 V AC and the doorbell needs 16–24 VAC, the job includes fitting Ring's 24 V Plug-In Adapter or a transformer on a fused spur, plus bypassing the old chime. A floodlight cam is priced as electrical work on your outside-light circuit, including any change to how it is switched.

The wall and the height come next: solid brick, render, a narrow uPVC frame that needs a wedge or corner kit, or a camera 2.5–3 m up that needs a ladder or a tower. On a high eave, your pro can ask another pro on JACK to help through the Pro2Pro feature. Cable runs through brick or to a PoE switch add time, and so does each extra device, though every device can go on one booking for one fixed price.

You buy the device; JACK does not sell any. Accessories the job needs, such as a transformer, a Ring Chime, a wedge kit or an outdoor junction box, are agreed and added at cost before you book, and so is parking where it has to be paid for. Prefer to pay for time? As a guide, hourly hire is typically £45–£95 per hour for smart home work and £55–£110 per hour for electrical work. For a big multi-device job, say a doorbell, three cameras and an alarm kit, a full-day handyman booking is a flat £350–£400 for up to 8 hours on site.

Frequently asked questions

Does an electrician need to install a Ring doorbell?

Usually not. A battery Ring doorbell involves no electrical work, and a wired one on your existing bell wiring or on Ring's Plug-In Adapter is not notifiable. A registered electrician comes in only if the plan includes a new circuit, and JACK counts a transformer given its own new way in the consumer unit as one.

Do you need an electrician to install a Ring Floodlight Cam in the UK?

Not a registered one, if it replaces an existing outside light on the same circuit, because in England that is non-notifiable. It is still 230 V work, so it needs a competent pro, a working earth and a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate at the end. Where there is no outside light, a spur from an existing circuit stays non-notifiable, but a new circuit from the consumer unit does not.

Do I need an electrician to change a light fitting in the UK?

Not in England: replacing a light fitting is not notifiable under Part P, and the IET gives it as an example of non-notifiable work. It must still be done safely by someone competent. A new circuit for the light, or new points in a bathroom zone, would be notifiable.

What certificate should I get after a Ring floodlight or transformer is fitted?

A Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate, the BS 7671 form for an addition or alteration to one existing circuit that does not create a new one. A new circuit needs an Electrical Installation Certificate instead, plus a Building Regulations compliance certificate from the electrician's scheme.

Can a handyman install a Ring doorbell?

Yes, in England, if they are competent for the work: no law reserves doorbell or camera fitting for electricians. A JACK pro fits battery and wired Ring doorbells, plug-in adapters and transformers on a fused spur, and leaves anything notifiable to a registered electrician.
