Old Ring Names, New Names, and Refitting Older Ring Devices
Updated
In the summer of 2026 Ring swapped 'Gen' labels for '2K' and '4K', so one doorbell can carry three names across the box, the app and the shop. This guide matches them up, flags the names that look alike but belong to different devices, and covers what to check before refitting or moving an older Ring.
In short
Ring renamed most of its range in July and August 2026, swapping generation labels for 2K and 4K: the Wired Video Doorbell Pro (3rd Gen) is now the Wired Doorbell 4K Pro, and the Battery Video Doorbell Plus (2nd Gen) is now the Battery Doorbell 2K Plus. Ring says the change is cosmetic, so devices, firmware and plans are unchanged. A JACK pro in London refits older Ring devices too, and checks Ring's guaranteed security-update date for the model first.

What changed in Ring's 2026 rename?
Between 21 July and 24 August 2026 Ring renamed most of its doorbells and cameras:
- Generation labels such as '2nd Gen' and '3rd Gen' gave way to the recording resolution, '2K' or '4K'
- The Plus, Pro and Elite tiers stayed
- Ring calls the change cosmetic only: the devices, firmware and plans are the same
- Boxes made before the change can still carry the old name, so a new doorbell may not match what the app calls it
- Ring defines 2K as 2560 × 1440 and 4K as 3840 × 2160 recording capability
Which Ring names look alike but are different devices?
These pairs cause most mix-ups on refits and upgrades, because the parts and power needs differ:
- Wired Video Doorbell Pro, formerly the Video Doorbell Pro 2, is the 2021 model; the Wired Video Doorbell Pro (3rd Gen) is the newer one now called Wired Doorbell 4K Pro. The DIN Rail Transformer (2nd Gen) that came with the Pro 2 does not power the 4K Pro
- The original Video Doorbell Pro is filed in Ring's help centre as 'Wired Doorbell Plus'. It is not the Wired Doorbell 2K Plus, which used to be the Wired Video Doorbell Plus (2nd Gen)
- Battery Video Doorbell, Plus and Pro without '(2nd Gen)' are earlier models; only the '(2nd Gen)' versions became the Battery Doorbell 2K, 2K Plus and 4K Pro
- Video Doorbell (2nd Gen) is an older battery doorbell, not the Battery Video Doorbell (2nd Gen)
- Floodlight Cam Pro is the help-centre name for the older Floodlight Cam Wired Pro, while Floodlight Cam Pro (2nd Gen) became the Floodlight Cam 4K Pro
- Door View Cam is now called Peephole Cam, and Stick Up Cam Battery and Plug-In (3rd Gen) are now Outdoor Cam; the Peephole Cam 2K and Outdoor Cam 2K are newer models again
When the box and the app disagree, a photo of the box or of the label on the device lets the pro identify it before the visit.
What changes when you refit or upgrade an older Ring doorbell?
Swapping one Ring for another on the same wiring is common, and these details catch people out:
- From a Video Doorbell (1st Gen) or Video Doorbell 2 to a Video Doorbell 3 or 3 Plus: Ring says to remove the old diode and any resistors, or the new doorbell may behave erratically
- Video Doorbell (2nd Gen), 2, 3, 3 Plus and 4 cannot run directly from either Ring DIN Rail Transformer; their only Ring DC option is the Plug-In Adapter
- Upgrading to a Wired Doorbell 4K Pro or 2K Plus: Ring's Doorbell Retrofit Kit lines up with the holes from an older Ring doorbell, or covers a European round junction box
- Video Doorbell 4 uses 5 GHz only on channels 100 and above, so it will not see a 5 GHz network on channels 36 to 64; the pro connects it on 2.4 GHz or changes the router's channel
- Original Video Doorbell Elite to Wired Doorbell 4K Elite: Ring says the existing PoE can be reused, and a Torx T6 releases the old faceplate screw
What changes when you refit an older Ring camera?
Older Ring cameras can be moved or refitted; these are the model quirks to plan for:
- Floodlight Cam Wired Plus and Wired Pro run on 100–240 VAC, and Ring says not to install them without a working earth, so the new position needs one
- Floodlight Cam Wired Pro, Spotlight Cam Pro and Stick Up Cam Pro also use 5 GHz on channels 100 and above only
- Spotlight Cam Plus and Pro: Ring's recommended mounting height is 2.5–3 m
- Outdoor Cam Plus uses a larger mounting plate than earlier Outdoor Cams, so the old plate cannot be reused
- A Spotlight Cam Wired set up as 'Spotlight Cam Mount' can switch other 230 V outdoor lights, up to 150 W in total; when it comes down, the pro checks how those lights will be switched afterwards
A refit starts with the old device's name and photos
Tell the pro what is on the wall now and what is going up, and the fixed price in the JACK app covers both. JACK pros work in London only. Send:
- The name on the old device's box or in the Ring app, and the new model, old name or new
- A photo of the old doorbell or camera on the wall, and of its mounting plate if it is already off
- The transformer label and the chime, if the old doorbell was wired
- Whether the old device is staying with you, moving to a new home or going for recycling
You buy the new device; JACK does not sell any. A retrofit kit, Plug-In Adapter or new transformer the swap needs is agreed and added at cost before you book.

How is Ring installation priced in London?
A vetted pro prices your Ring job from the model and your photos, and the JACK app shows that fixed price before you book.
Power moves the price more than the model name. A battery doorbell or camera on a wall with a good signal is the lightest job. A wired doorbell brings in the bell transformer: if yours gives 8–12 V AC and the doorbell needs 16–24 VAC, the job includes fitting Ring's 24 V Plug-In Adapter or a transformer on a fused spur, plus bypassing the old chime. A floodlight cam is priced as electrical work on your outside-light circuit, including any change to how it is switched.
The wall and the height come next: solid brick, render, a narrow uPVC frame that needs a wedge or corner kit, or a camera 2.5–3 m up that needs a ladder or a tower. On a high eave, your pro can ask another pro on JACK to help through the Pro2Pro feature. Cable runs through brick or to a PoE switch add time, and so does each extra device, though every device can go on one booking for one fixed price.
You buy the device; JACK does not sell any. Accessories the job needs, such as a transformer, a Ring Chime, a wedge kit or an outdoor junction box, are agreed and added at cost before you book, and so is parking where it has to be paid for. Prefer to pay for time? As a guide, hourly hire is typically £45–£95 per hour for smart home work and £55–£110 per hour for electrical work. For a big multi-device job, say a doorbell, three cameras and an alarm kit, a full-day handyman booking is a flat £350–£400 for up to 8 hours on site.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Ring Wired Doorbell 4K Pro the same as the Video Doorbell Pro 2?
No. The Video Doorbell Pro 2, now listed as Wired Video Doorbell Pro, is the 2021 model. The Wired Doorbell 4K Pro was sold as the Wired Video Doorbell Pro (3rd Gen), and it takes Ring's DIN Rail Transformer (3rd Gen) or the Plug-In Adapter rather than the Pro 2's 2nd Gen DIN rail.
Is my old Ring doorbell still getting security updates?
That depends on your model's date in Ring's security-update list. Ring guarantees updates for the Video Doorbell 3, 3 Plus and 4 at least until 31 Dec 2027, and for the Video Doorbell Wired at least until 31 Dec 2030. For the Video Doorbell 2 the guaranteed period ended on 31 Dec 2025, though Ring says it may keep updating devices for as long as it can.
Did Ring's rename change my subscription or app?
No. Ring says the rename is cosmetic only, with the same devices, firmware and plans. What changed is the name Ring uses in its help centre and on newer boxes.
Can I reuse the old screw holes when I upgrade my Ring doorbell?
Often, yes. For the Wired Doorbell 4K Pro and 2K Plus, Ring's Doorbell Retrofit Kit has hole guides for older Ring doorbells. Ring adds that if the retrofit kit starts to flex, the screws are too tight.
Can a pro move my Ring doorbell to a new house?
Yes, if both addresses are in London. A JACK pro takes it down, refits it at the new address and helps you update the address and reconnect the device in the Ring app, as Ring's moving guide describes. Check the model's security-update date first, so you know how long it stays supported.
