Ring Wired Doorbell 4K Elite Installation in London

Updated

Formerly sold as Wired Doorbell Elite (2nd Gen); Ring renamed it Wired Doorbell 4K Elite on 21 July 2026, and the UK store calls it Wired Video Doorbell 4K Elite. It is powered over an Ethernet cable by PoE+, sits flush in the wall on a low-voltage electrical box, and has one relay that drives either a chime or a gate release. A vetted JACK pro in London runs the data cable, fits the box and the doorbell and sets it up, for a fixed price before you book.

In short

Yes. A vetted JACK pro in London installs the Ring Wired Doorbell 4K Elite, which is powered by PoE+ over Cat5e or better cable from an 802.3at switch or injector less than 100 m away, neither of which comes in the box. The pro powers it by PoE+ rather than from your bell transformer, and its single relay can ring an existing 8–24 VAC chime or work a gate's existing relay access system, but not both.

Power, Wi-Fi and wiring facts come from Ring's UK help centre and UK store, linked beside each fact. Most Ring models changed name in the summer of 2026, so an older box may show a previous name: check the model on your box or order and send it with your request. Last checked 31 October 2026.

How the Wired Doorbell 4K Elite is powered and mounted

Of the doorbells on Ring's UK store, the 4K Elite is the one powered over a data cable. A PoE+ switch or injector indoors, which is not in the box, sends power and data down a single Cat5e or Cat6 cable to the door, less than 100 m away. If data over that cable is not practical, PoE+ can still power the doorbell while it talks to the router over Wi-Fi.

It is designed to sit flush. Ring's guide has you cut a rectangular opening from a template and route the cable from inside the wall, with the low-voltage electrical box supplied or another suitable box, depending on how the wall is built; a surface-mount option exists where cutting in is not sensible. On a solid brick London front that means a recess in the masonry and a hole through for the cable, so the position is agreed with you before anything is marked. On a long run through a house, your pro can ask another pro on JACK to help through the Pro2Pro feature.

Decide early what the relay is for. It can ring an existing chime on 8–24 VAC at 10–40 VA, or connect to a gate or door controller that already has a relay access system, where Ring suggests the request-to-exit terminals. It cannot do both. Ring suggests a low-voltage contractor for chime or access-control wiring, so the pro looks at your chime or gate controller from photos before pricing, and does not add a gate release where none exists.

What the pro checks first

  • Where the PoE+ switch or injector will live, beside the router and a socket
  • The cable route and its length, which has to stay under 100 m
  • What the wall is: solid brick, render, timber or a uPVC surround, which decides flush or surface mounting
  • Whether the relay is for a chime or a gate, with photos of that chime or gate controller
  • On an upgrade from the original Video Doorbell Elite, whether its existing PoE setup can power the new one, as Ring says it can

What the pro does on the Wired Doorbell 4K Elite

  • PoE+ (802.3at) switch or injector placed indoors and connected to the router
  • Cat5e or Cat6 cable run to the door, terminated and tested before the doorbell goes on
  • Rectangular opening cut from Ring's template and the low-voltage box set in, or the surface-mount option used
  • Relay wired to the chime or to an existing gate controller's request-to-exit terminals, never to both
  • Doorbell mounted and set up on Ethernet, or on Wi-Fi with PoE+ for power
  • Motion settings, privacy zones and Remote Gate Access tested from the app with you

How the Wired Doorbell 4K Elite installation goes

  1. 1Position, cable route and switch location agreed from your photos
  2. 2Cable pulled from the switch or injector to the door, and the hole through the wall sealed
  3. 3Opening cut and the electrical box fitted, or the surface mount fixed
  4. 4Cable terminated, tested and connected to the doorbell
  5. 5Relay connected to the chime or gate controller, if you are using it
  6. 6Doorbell secured, powered from PoE+ and set up in the Ring app
  7. 7A test ring, Live View and a remote gate release where one is connected

Before you book: what to send

  • Photos of the door, the frame and the wall around the bell position
  • Where your router is, and roughly how far the cable would run in metres
  • The PoE+ switch or injector you already have, if any
  • Photos of the chime or the gate controller, including any labels
  • If you are upgrading from the original Video Doorbell Elite, a photo of it on the wall

Is PoE cabling for the 4K Elite notifiable under Part P?

No. It is extra-low-voltage cabling with no new circuit, so in England it is not notifiable, though it still has to be installed safely:

  • The PoE+ switch or injector plugs into an existing socket indoors
  • The cable carries power and data at extra-low voltage from that switch to the door
  • BS 7671:2018+A4:2026, the current wiring regulations, adds a section on Power over Ethernet (Section 716)
  • If there is no socket where the switch should go, a new one spurred from an existing circuit is not notifiable either; a new circuit from the consumer unit is a registered electrician's job, and JACK does not book it

Frequently asked questions

Can the Ring Wired Doorbell 4K Elite run from my doorbell transformer?

Not a typical UK one, and a JACK pro fits it on PoE+ only. Ring's UK help page lists PoE+ as its power source; the UK store also lists an existing doorbell system at 16–24 VAC, with 30–40 VA recommended, which is more than the 8–12 V AC a UK bell transformer usually gives. Your bell transformer still matters if the relay is driving your chime, which Ring rates at 8–24 VAC and 10–40 VA.

Can the 4K Elite ring my chime and open my gate?

One or the other. Ring says the single relay connects to either an in-home chime or an access-control system, and that it is not possible to connect both. If the relay opens the gate, a plug-in Ring chime or an Echo can sound indoors instead.

Does the Wired Doorbell 4K Elite need Wi-Fi?

Not necessarily. It has a 100 Mbit Ethernet port, so the cable that powers it can carry its data too, which suits a front door your Wi-Fi does not reach. It also has dual-band Wi-Fi, and Ring notes that PoE+ can power it while Wi-Fi carries the data.

How much does Ring Wired Doorbell 4K Elite installation cost in London?

It is a fixed price for your Wired Doorbell 4K Elite, worked out by a vetted pro from the model, a photo of where it is going and what power is there now, and shown in the JACK app before you book. Other devices can go on the same booking for one price. If you would rather pay for time, hourly hire for smart home is typically £45–£95 per hour as a guide.
