Ring Wired Doorbell 2K Installation in London

Updated

Formerly sold as Wired Video Doorbell (2nd Gen); Ring renamed it Wired Doorbell 2K on 5 August 2026, and the UK store calls it Wired Video Doorbell 2K, also sold in a version with the Plug-In Adapter. It has no battery, so it runs only on wired power, connects on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only and takes the old chime out of the circuit with a bypass cable from the box. A vetted JACK pro in London wires it to your bell transformer or Ring's Plug-In Adapter and sets up a Ring chime in its place, for a fixed price before you book.

In short

Yes. A vetted JACK pro in London installs the Ring Wired Doorbell 2K on existing bell wiring at 8–24 VAC from a transformer of 10 VA or more, or on Ring's Plug-In Adapter (2nd Gen) from an indoor socket where the transformer is too weak or missing. Either way the old chime stops ringing, bypassed with the cable in the box on bell wiring, so a plug-in Ring chime or an Echo takes over; the doorbell also needs a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi signal at the door.

Power, Wi-Fi and wiring facts come from Ring's UK help centre and UK store, linked beside each fact. Most Ring models changed name in the summer of 2026, so an older box may show a previous name: check the model on your box or order and send it with your request. Last checked 31 October 2026.

How the Wired Doorbell 2K is powered and mounted

With no battery inside, the Wired Doorbell 2K is only ever as good as its supply. On a bell circuit it accepts 8–24 VAC, so the voltage from a British bell transformer is fine; power is the question. Its product page asks for 10–40 VA, more than the 8 VA Ring's hardwiring guidelines give for the older Video Doorbell Wired, and many older bell transformers are rated about 8 VA. The pro sizes the supply to this model's own page.

Where the transformer falls short, or there is none, Ring's Plug-In Adapter (2nd Gen) gives 24 V DC from an ordinary indoor socket through a 6 m cable, and Ring sells the doorbell boxed with one. The cable still has to reach the door, through the frame, the wall or a window, and that route is the part of the job that needs agreeing in a flat or a rented home.

Either way the chime in the hall goes quiet. On bell wiring, two wires come off at the chime, the one on terminal '0' and the one on '2' or '3', and the bypass cable joins them, so the supply passes straight to the doorbell. Ring's UK store says this model does not support mechanical chimes and pairs it with the Chime (3rd Gen); a Chime Pro rings just the same and doubles as a Wi-Fi extender for Ring devices, useful for a doorbell limited to 2.4 GHz at the far end of a solid brick house.

What the pro checks first

  • The transformer label: 8–24 VAC, and 10 VA or more for this model
  • That the router's 2.4 GHz band is switched on, since this doorbell cannot see 5 GHz
  • The chime's terminal numbers, so the right two wires go into the bypass
  • How many chimes the circuit has, because Ring wants extra ones bypassed as well
  • Whether a door entry panel or intercom shares the wiring, since Ring says not to wire this doorbell to a DC-powered intercom system
  • For the Plug-In Adapter, the socket nearest the door and a route for its 6 m cable

What the pro does on the Wired Doorbell 2K

  • Chime wiring photographed before anything moves, so it can be restored one day
  • Bypass cable fitted at the chime with its Wago connectors, and the chime cover refitted
  • Mounting plate fixed over the bell wires with the screws and anchors from the box
  • Doorbell joined to the 2.4 GHz network after a signal reading at the step
  • A Ring chime or Echo set up indoors so the doorbell is heard
  • Test press with the indoor chime sounding and the alert on your phone

How the Wired Doorbell 2K installation goes

  1. 1Bell circuit isolated at the consumer unit
  2. 2On bell wiring, the chime's '0' wire and its '2' or '3' wire disconnected and joined through the bypass cable
  3. 3Old bell push removed and the mounting plate fixed over the bell wires
  4. 4Doorbell connected and clipped on, or the Plug-In Adapter cable run in and clipped neatly
  5. 5Power restored and the doorbell set up in the Ring app on 2.4 GHz
  6. 6Chime (3rd Gen), Chime Pro or Echo linked so the ring sounds indoors
  7. 7Test press, Live View and a motion alert checked with you

Before you book: what to send

  • The transformer label, photographed sharply enough that the volts and VA can be read
  • A photo of the chime and its make and model; leave the cover on if it may be mains-fed
  • Photos of the front door and its frame, taken from the step
  • A photo of the indoor socket closest to the front door, for a possible Plug-In Adapter route
  • Which Ring chime or Echo you already have, or want added

Why the Wired Doorbell 2K suits bell wiring the 2K Plus cannot use

Of Ring's current wired doorbells, this is the one whose voltage range covers what British bell systems usually give:

  • It accepts 8–24 VAC, where the Wired Doorbell 2K Plus and 4K Pro need 16–24 VAC
  • Ring says a UK bell transformer usually reads 8–12 V AC, which is inside this model's range
  • Its limit is power: 10 VA or more on its product page, so an 8 VA transformer means the Plug-In Adapter or a stronger transformer
  • It is wired-only, so if the supply drops there is no battery to carry it

Ring's DC options for this model are its own Plug-In Adapter (2nd Gen) and DIN Rail Transformers; Ring rules out third-party DC adapters. Anything extra the supply needs is agreed and added at cost before you book.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Ring Wired Doorbell 2K work with a mechanical chime?

No. Ring's UK store says this model does not support mechanical chimes, and its install guide bypasses whatever chime is on the wall using the cable from the box. You hear the doorbell through a plug-in Ring chime, an Echo or the Ring app, and Ring sells a bundle with the Chime (3rd Gen).

Will the Wired Doorbell 2K connect to 5 GHz Wi-Fi?

No, it is 2.4 GHz only, so your router's 2.4 GHz band has to stay switched on. It also needs a usable signal at the door: Ring's scale calls -60 to -70 okay and -70 to -80 poor. In a solid-walled terrace with the router at the back, a Chime Pro or a mesh point near the front often fixes a weak reading.

Is the Wired Doorbell 2K the same as the Video Doorbell Wired?

No. The Video Doorbell Wired is Ring's older wired-only model; the Wired Doorbell 2K was sold as Wired Video Doorbell (2nd Gen) until August 2026 and records in 2K. Both bypass the chime, but Ring's power figures differ: 8–40 VA for the Video Doorbell Wired, 10–40 VA on the 2K's own page.

How much does Ring Wired Doorbell 2K installation cost in London?

It is a fixed price for your Wired Doorbell 2K, worked out by a vetted pro from the model, a photo of where it is going and what power is there now, and shown in the JACK app before you book. Other devices can go on the same booking for one price. If you would rather pay for time, hourly hire for smart home is typically £45–£95 per hour as a guide.
