Do You Need an Electrician to Install eufy?
Updated
eufy talks about electricians in different tones: 'must' for its floodlight outside North America, 'highly recommends' for an older floodlight's junction box, 'if you're not comfortable' for its doorbells, and 'you don't need a professional electrician' in a UK blog on chimes. None of them is English law. This guide sets each eufy job against the Building Regulations for England, the rules known as Part P.
In short
For most eufy jobs, no. In England, battery and solar cameras, doorbells on existing bell wiring, plug-in HomeBases, PoE cameras and a Floodlight Camera E340 replacing an outside light on the same circuit are not notifiable under Part P, which puts them within what a JACK pro in London fits, with a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate wherever the 230 V side is touched. Notifiable work, meaning a new circuit, a new or replacement consumer unit, or an addition or alteration around a bath or shower, has to be notified to building control, which a registered electrician does for you; JACK does not book it.

eufy's own words about electricians and wiring differ by product
These are eufy's words, written for many countries at once, not a UK rule:
- Floodlight Camera E340, UK page: outside North America, installation and wiring 'must be performed by a licensed electrician'
- Floodlight Camera E340 user guide: shut off the power at the breaker, 'Do not use a dimmer switch or timer for this product' and 'Properly ground fixture'
- Floodlight Cam 2 Pro: eufy 'highly recommends' a qualified electrician if you fit its junction box yourself
- Video Doorbell E340 quick start guide: 'If you're not comfortable installing it yourself, have a qualified electrician to do it.'
- eufy's UK blog, on wiring a doorbell camera to an existing chime: 'You don't need a professional electrician for this.'
UK law has no general licence for electricians. In England the Building Regulations decide which electrical work building control must be told about, not who may do it: the Planning Portal says they do not restrict who may carry out electrical installation work.
What makes electrical work notifiable in England?
In England, the trigger is regulation 12(6A) of the Building Regulations 2010, which lists three kinds of home electrical work:
- A complete new circuit run from the consumer unit
- Replacing the consumer unit, or fitting a new one
- Any addition or alteration in a special location: around a bath or shower, up to 2.25 m from the floor and 0.6 m out from the bath or tray, or in a room with a swimming pool or sauna heater
Everything else, such as adding to an existing circuit outside those bath and shower zones or a like-for-like replacement, is not notifiable but must still be safe. If someone who is not registered does notifiable work, building control has to be told before it starts and checks it, or, in England only, a registered third-party certifier does.
Most eufy kit never touches the mains
Sorted by what sits behind the device:
- Nothing: battery and solar cameras such as the eufyCam S3 Pro, eufyCam S4 and SoloCam S340, the C30 doorbell, alarm sensors
- A plug: the HomeBase S380 and Mini on their adapters, Chime 2, the MiniBase Chime, indoor cameras and the NVR's power supply
- Extra-low voltage: a doorbell on the existing bell wire, and PoE cameras on Ethernet from an NVR such as the S4 Max
- The 230 V side: a new bell transformer, the Floodlight Camera E340, or an outdoor socket for a plug-in camera
What does the pro check before a eufy floodlight goes up?
The checks start at the consumer unit, not the ladder:
- The circuit isolated and proved dead with a tester, not just switched off at the wall
- An earth at the old light, as eufy asks for a grounded fitting; some older London lighting circuits have none, and that is put right first
- No timer, dimmer or PIR sensor left on the supply, because eufy's guide forbids a dimmer or timer on the E340
- RCD protection, and a circuit in good enough order to take the new fitting
- A sound weatherproof box behind it: the 'UL-listed' junction box in eufy's FAQ is a North American safety listing, so the pro uses an enclosure suited to outdoor use here and wires to BS 7671
Which eufy jobs go to a registered electrician instead?
These belong to a registered electrician, and are not something JACK books with a eufy installation:
- A new circuit for a floodlight, outdoor socket or camera supply where no existing circuit can take it
- A doorbell transformer given its own new way in the consumer unit, which JACK treats as a new circuit
- A consumer unit replacement, even one needed only to make room for a new circuit
- Anything within the bath or shower zones; a camera has no place in a bathroom in any case
Book an electrician on one of the competent person schemes GOV.UK lists, who notifies the work for you, or tell your council's building control before anyone starts. The eufy device can then go on the finished circuit as a separate JACK booking.
JACK pros fit the non-notifiable eufy work
Floodlight and transformer jobs are priced from photos, and insured pros are shown first. Only London addresses can be booked. Please send:
- The outside light, close up and from the ground, and the switch, sensor or timer that runs it
- The consumer unit, photographed with its cover shut, so the pro can read the breaker labels and see whether there is an RCD
- For a flat or a rental, the freeholder's or landlord's written go-ahead; a landlord should also be given a copy of any certificate afterwards
The eufy device is your purchase, not JACK's. A junction box, fused spur or transformer, if needed, is agreed and added at cost before you book.
Book a eufy floodlight camera installationWhich eufy jobs need a registered electrician?
For homes in England. Notifiable work has to reach building control, through a scheme-registered electrician, a building notice given before work starts, or a registered third-party certifier.
| eufy job | Notifiable under Part P? | Can a JACK pro fit it? | Paperwork to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| eufyCam S3 Pro, eufyCam S4, SoloCam S340 or another battery or solar camera | No: nothing is wired | Yes | None for the electrics |
| HomeBase, Chime 2, indoor cameras, or the NVR on its plug-in supply | No: plugged into existing sockets | Yes | None for the electrics |
| Video Doorbell E340, C31 or S4 Wired on the existing bell transformer | No: the bell wiring is extra-low voltage and already there | Yes | None, as long as no mains work is done |
| A new bell transformer, swapped like-for-like or fed from a fused spur on an existing circuit | No: a replacement, or an addition away from a bath or shower | Yes | Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate |
| Floodlight Camera E340 in place of an existing outside light | No: a replacement on the same circuit | Yes, with a working earth and no dimmer or timer | Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate |
| An outdoor socket spurred from an existing circuit, for a plug-in camera | No, in England | Yes, with RCD protection | Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate |
| NVR Security System S4 Max or other PoE cameras on Ethernet | No: Ethernet carries extra-low voltage | Yes | None for the electrics |
| Any brand-new circuit, whether for a floodlight, an outdoor socket, cameras or a transformer on its own consumer-unit way | Yes: a new circuit | No; JACK does not book it | Electrical Installation Certificate from the registered electrician, and the scheme's compliance certificate |
| Any work in a bath or shower zone, or a new consumer unit | Yes | No; JACK does not book it | The same as a new circuit |

How eufy installation is priced
A vetted pro prices your job from the eufy model, photos of where each device goes and what power is there now, and the JACK app shows you that fixed price before you book.
The power and the walls move the price more than the device does. A battery doorbell on a brick reveal, or a SoloCam on a fence post, is a smaller job. An S4 Wired doorbell on a new transformer, a HomeBase moved to the middle of the house with a hard drive fitted, a Floodlight Camera E340 in place of an outside light, or four PoE cameras cabled through solid brick and a loft all take longer, and the price reflects that.
The eufy kit is yours to buy, since JACK sells no devices. A stronger transformer, a Chime 2, a wedge, a floodlight's weatherproof box or extra Cat cable is agreed with you and added at cost before you book, and several devices go on one booking for one price. Where parking has to be paid for, that is added at cost and agreed before you book too.
Prefer to pay for time? As a guide, smart home work is typically £45–£95 per hour, and electrical work such as a floodlight camera £55–£110 per hour. For a multi-camera system or a PoE NVR, a full-day booking is a flat £350–£400 for up to 8 hours on site.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an electrician to install a eufy doorbell?
Usually not. A battery eufy doorbell involves no electrical work, and connecting one to existing bell wiring is extra-low-voltage work on an existing circuit; eufy's own UK blog says you don't need a professional electrician to wire a doorbell camera to an existing chime. Only a new transformer circuit from the consumer unit needs a registered one.
eufy says the Floodlight Camera E340 needs a 'licensed electrician': does that apply in the UK?
Not under English law, which has no general licence for electricians. eufy's line, written for every market outside North America, is that installation and wiring 'must be performed by a licensed electrician'; English law asks instead whether the work is notifiable, and swapping an outside light for the E340 on that light's circuit is not, so a competent pro can fit it and leave a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate. The closest UK match to eufy's wording is an electrician registered with a competent person scheme, whom you can book directly if you want to follow eufy's instruction to the letter.
Do eufy PoE cameras need an electrician?
No. eufy's PoE cameras carry power and data on a single Ethernet cable from the NVR or a PoE switch, which is extra-low voltage and not notifiable. The work is drilling, routing and terminating cable, and the NVR plugs into an ordinary socket.
Can a handyman install eufy cameras?
Yes. English law does not keep camera or doorbell fitting for electricians; what matters is that whoever does it is competent. Battery, solar and PoE eufy cameras involve no notifiable work, and a JACK pro also fits eufy floodlights on an existing lighting circuit.
