Aqara Light Switch H2 Installation in London

Updated

There is no British-style Aqara light switch. The Light Switch H2 sold in the UK is the EU model on an 86 mm square plate, and the version Aqara's UK shop calls UK exclusive differs only by an extra dark grey button. It runs on Thread or Zigbee and works with or without a neutral, but it sits deeper in the wall than most British switches. A vetted JACK pro in London who does electrical work checks your back box, wiring and bulbs, then fits the H2 or the Dimmer H2 in place of your switch, for a fixed price in the JACK app before you book.

In short

Yes. A vetted JACK pro in London who does electrical work replaces your light switch with an Aqara Light Switch H2, which runs with or without a neutral but needs 30 mm of depth inside the wall, so a shallow UK back box is changed for a deeper one first. Replacing a switch is not notifiable under Part P in England, and JACK does not book switch work inside a bathroom's zones; ask your pro for a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate.

Device facts come from Aqara's product pages, its UK and EU store, the Aqara UK Shop and Aqara's own Amazon UK listings, linked beside each fact. How the Light Switch H2 is powered and mounted

Aqara makes the H2 for European wall boxes, and the UK gets the same switch. Its plate is an 86 mm square like a British one, but the body behind it needs 30 mm inside the wall. Flush boxes behind UK light switches are commonly 25 mm deep, and older ones can be as shallow as 16 mm, so the pro measures before anything is fitted: a 35 mm box takes the H2, and changing the box is an alteration to the existing circuit, not notifiable work. Aqara does not publish the H2's screw spacing either, so the pro checks its fixings meet the lugs on your box.

Most British lighting is wired loop-in at the ceiling rose, which leaves only a permanent live and a switched live at the switch. The H2 copes: it is a 2-in-1 switch that runs with or without a neutral. Without one it has a minimum load, 5 W for LEDs on Aqara's UK shop figures, so a single low-wattage bulb may be too little, and it becomes an end device rather than a router, meaning it does not pass the Zigbee signal on to other Aqara devices. With a neutral at the switch, the minimum load goes away.

Two details set it apart from a plain UK switch. Aqara's wiring steps show live, neutral and switched-live terminals but no earth, so the earth conductor in the box is kept continuous and made safe rather than left loose, and on an older circuit with no earth at all the H2's plastic front is the safer choice than a switch with a metal frame. Its spec also carries the μ mark for micro-disconnection, which means it is not an isolator: the pro turns the circuit off at the consumer unit before working on any light fitting it controls.

What the pro checks first

  • The depth of the back box, since 16 mm and 25 mm boxes are too shallow for the H2
  • Whether a neutral is present at the switch, found by testing rather than by wire colour
  • The wattage of the bulbs on each channel, against the 5 W LED minimum when there is no neutral
  • Whether the same lights are also switched from somewhere else, such as the other end of a landing
  • Whether the circuit has an earth, and whether the box's fixing lugs line up with the switch
  • Which hub or Matter system you already run, to choose between Thread and Zigbee

What the pro does on the Light Switch H2

  • Lighting circuit switched off at the consumer unit and tested dead at the switch before any wire is touched
  • Back box changed for a 35 mm or deeper one where it is too shallow, with any making good agreed before booking
  • Permanent live, switched live and any neutral connected to the H2's L, L1 and N terminals
  • Earth conductor kept continuous and safely terminated, since the switch has nowhere to take it
  • Switch paired in Thread or Zigbee mode, and each button set to work its light or to run scenes
  • Circuit tested once the switch is fixed; ask your pro for a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate

How the Light Switch H2 installation goes

  1. 1Photos of the switch, the box and the bulbs reviewed, so a deeper box is agreed before the visit
  2. 2Power isolated at the consumer unit and the switch proved dead
  3. 3Old switch removed and each conductor identified by testing
  4. 4Box deepened or replaced where needed, then the H2 wired and screwed home
  5. 5Power restored and each channel tried against its lights
  6. 6Switch added to Aqara Home, Apple Home, Google Home or Alexa, and the buttons set up with you

Before you book: what to send

  • A photo of the switch with the plate on, and one of the lights it works
  • How many gangs the plate has, and whether another switch works the same lights
  • Whether you have the H2 or the Dimmer H2, with one or two channels
  • Which smart-home system you use: an Aqara hub, Apple Home, Google Home or Alexa
  • In a rented home, the landlord's agreement to change the switch

What changes with the Aqara Dimmer Switch H2?

The Dimmer Switch H2 EU (KD-R01E/D) looks like the H2 but makes a different fitting job:

  • It sits deeper: Aqara's UK shop gives 86 × 86 × 55.45 mm with an in-wall depth of 34.6 mm, and Aqara's Amazon UK listing asks for a box at least 40 mm deep, so a deeper box such as the common 47 mm size is usually fitted
  • Its minimum load is 4 W when it runs through Matter in Aqara Home, or 9 W by other methods, on Aqara's UK shop figures
  • It dims LED and CFL loads up to 200 W and halogen or incandescent loads up to 300 W, the lower of the two figures Aqara publishes; magnetic low-voltage (MLV) transformers are not compatible
  • The pro checks every bulb on the circuit is marked dimmable before the dimmer goes in
  • Aqara's UK statement gives the Dimmer H2 the same defined support period as the switch, to 31 December 2026 (checked 1 November 2026)

Is swapping a switch for an Aqara H2 notifiable?

No, but it is still electrical work on a mains lighting circuit, so these points apply in England:

  • Approved Document P treats replacing a switch as a replacement, which is not notifiable anywhere
  • Fitting a deeper box, or bringing a neutral down from the ceiling rose, alters the existing circuit and is not notifiable outside a bathroom's zones
  • Aqara's UK shop says to consult a professional electrician for installation; the law in England asks for competence, not membership of a scheme
  • No pro JACK books is registered with a competent person scheme, and JACK does not book switch work inside a bathroom's zones; ask your pro for a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate

Frequently asked questions

Is there a UK version of the Aqara Light Switch H2?

Not a British-format one. The H2 sold in the UK is the EU switch on an 86 mm square plate, and the version Aqara's UK shop calls UK exclusive adds an extra dark grey button. It goes into a UK box that is deep enough for its 30 mm body, once the pro has checked the fixings line up.

Does the Aqara H2 switch need a neutral wire?

No, it works either way. Without a neutral it needs a minimum load, 5 W for LED bulbs on Aqara's UK shop figures, and it does not relay the Zigbee signal for other Aqara devices. With a neutral there is no minimum load, and the switch can act as a router for the mesh.

Can the H2's buttons run scenes instead of switching the light?

Yes. Aqara's listing describes a decoupled, or wireless switch, mode in which a button stops switching its output and triggers scenes or other devices instead. That suits smart bulbs that need constant power, and the pro sets it with you once the switch is fitted.

How much does Aqara Light Switch H2 installation cost in London?

It is a fixed price for your Light Switch H2, worked out by a vetted pro from the model, a photo of where it is going and what power is there now, and shown in the JACK app before you book. Other devices can go on the same booking for one price. If you would rather pay for time, hourly hire for electrical work is typically £55–£110 per hour as a guide.
