Aqara Presence Sensor FP2 Installation in London
Updated
The Aqara Presence Sensor FP2 uses millimetre-wave radar instead of a camera or a motion detector, so it knows someone is still in the room while they sit, read or sleep, and roughly where they are. It joins your Wi-Fi without an Aqara hub, but it has no battery and must stay plugged in over USB-C. A vetted JACK pro in London picks the wall or ceiling spot for what you want it to do, mounts it, runs the lead tidily and draws the zones, for a fixed price in the JACK app before you book.
In short
Yes. A vetted JACK pro in London mounts the Aqara FP2 on a wall, for room zones and counting people, or on the ceiling, which Aqara requires for fall detection, and sets it up on your Wi-Fi with no Aqara hub. It is a wired sensor that must be powered all the time over USB-C, so the job is a secure fixing, a neat cable route to a socket and zones that match how the room is used.

How the Presence Sensor FP2 is powered and mounted
A PIR motion sensor only reacts to movement, which is why lights go off on someone reading quietly. The FP2's radar picks up the small movements of a person sitting or lying still, and on a wall it places them in zones you name, such as the sofa, the desk or the bed, so one sensor can run different automations in different parts of a room. Aqara calls it a wired sensor that should be constantly powered: it takes a USB-C lead from a 5 V 1 A supply and stops working when unplugged.
The mounting position decides the features. On a wall, facing into the room, the FP2 tracks positions and counts people, up to five, though Aqara says it does best with three or fewer. Fall detection only works from the ceiling, and Aqara ties zones and multi-person detection to the wall, so one sensor cannot do both jobs in the same room. That is why the pro asks what you want before choosing a spot: lights that follow you round a living room, an alert if someone falls in a hallway, or both, which means two sensors.
The lead is the visible part of the job. A wall position close to a socket needs only a short run in a slim cover; a ceiling position needs the cable taken up the wall and along the ceiling line, which is quoted with you first. Swapping a nearby socket for one with USB outlets is a replacement on an existing circuit, not notifiable in England, and you can ask your pro for a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate for it. JACK adds no socket within 3 m of a bath or shower tray and no fixed wiring inside a bathroom's zones.
What the pro checks first
- What you want the sensor to do, since zones and people counting need a wall and fall alerts need the ceiling
- The 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi signal at the chosen spot, because the FP2 talks to your router rather than to a hub
- The nearest socket, and a cable route to it that avoids doorways and walkways
- Where the bed, sofa or desk sit, so zones are drawn round the places people actually stay
- Who else lives or works in the home, since everyone the sensor can see should know it is there
What the pro does on the Presence Sensor FP2
- Sensor fixed at the agreed height and angle, with plugs that suit brick, plaster or plasterboard
- USB-C lead run along the skirting, architrave or ceiling line, in a slim cover where it would otherwise show
- Sensor added to the Aqara Home app on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and named by room
- Room edges and zones set while the pro walks the room and checks each zone reports the right place
- Fall alerts set up only on a ceiling mount, with the people who receive them agreed with you
- Sleep and vital-sign tracking left switched off unless the person being tracked asked for it
- One automation tried end to end, such as a light that stays on while someone sits still
How the Presence Sensor FP2 installation goes
- 1Your aim agreed, wall or ceiling chosen, and the Wi-Fi tested where the sensor will go
- 2Sensor powered and paired in the Aqara Home app before it goes up, while it is within easy reach
- 3Fixing marked, drilled and the sensor mounted at the agreed angle
- 4Lead run to the socket and clipped or covered
- 5Zones drawn and walked through one by one
- 6Automations or alerts linked and shown working on your phone
Before you book: what to send
- A photo of the room from the doorway, marked with where you would like the sensor
- Whether you want zones, people counting, fall alerts or sleep tracking, and for whom
- Where the nearest socket is, and whether you already have a 5 V USB-C power supply for it
- In a rented home, your landlord's agreement to screw fixings into the wall or ceiling
Who should know an FP2 is in the room?
The FP2 has no camera, but it does record where people are and, if switched on, how they breathe while asleep. JACK pros fit it on these terms:
- UK data protection law leaves out 'purely personal or household activity', which covers a sensor you fit for your own household
- That exemption is unlikely to stretch to a landlord's sensor in a let, the shared rooms of an HMO, a holiday let, or a relative or carer watching someone else
- Heart and breathing readings about another person are health information, so sleep tracking is turned on only for the person who asked for it
- Anyone who lives or works in the home, such as a lodger, cleaner or carer, should be told the sensor is there
- Pros do not fit presence sensors in bathrooms that other people share, or in the communal rooms of a shared house
FP2 or FP300: which presence sensor suits the room?
Aqara's two presence sensors are fitted differently, mostly because of how each one is powered.
| Presence Sensor FP2 | Presence Multi-Sensor FP300 | |
|---|---|---|
| Power | USB-C, plugged in all the time | 2 × CR2450 coin cells: up to 3 years on Zigbee, up to 2 on Thread |
| Network | Wi-Fi, with no Aqara hub | Zigbee through an Aqara hub, or Thread with a Matter controller |
| Sensing | 60–64 GHz radar | Dual PIR plus 60 GHz radar, with light, temperature and humidity sensors |
| Mounting | Wall for zones; ceiling for fall detection | Wall, ceiling, corner (45° recommended) or magnetic |
| Reach | Up to 40 m² and 30 zones | 120° field of view, 6 m |
FP300 figures are from Aqara's FP300 product page. Where no socket is within reach of the right spot, a battery sensor avoids a cable run altogether.

Full pricing guide for Aqara installationFrequently asked questions
Do I need a hub for the Aqara FP2?
No. Aqara says no Aqara hub is required: the FP2 joins your Wi-Fi router directly, on 2.4 GHz according to its spec page, and its local automations carry on without the cloud. What it does need is a USB-C supply that stays on, which is the part that shapes where it can go.
Can the Aqara FP2 detect falls when it is mounted on a wall?
No. Aqara says ceiling placement is required for fall detection, while zone positioning and multi-person detection need a wall mount. Aqara also states the FP2 is not a medical device, so a fall alert should not replace a care alarm or service that someone relies on.
Can an Aqara FP2 go in a bathroom?
Aqara says yes: it rates the FP2 IPX5 and says it can go in humid rooms such as bathrooms if the power adapter and socket are waterproof. A JACK pro will not add a socket near the bath or shower or wire anything into the zones around them, and does not put presence sensors in a bathroom that other people use.
How much does Aqara Presence Sensor FP2 installation cost in London?
It is a fixed price for your Presence Sensor FP2, worked out by a vetted pro from the model, a photo of where it is going and what power is there now, and shown in the JACK app before you book. Other devices can go on the same booking for one price. If you would rather pay for time, hourly hire for smart home is typically £45–£95 per hour as a guide.
