eufy Video Doorbell E340 Installation in London

Updated

The Video Doorbell E340 is model T8214, listed on eufy's UK store as Video Doorbell E340 (Battery Powered), with a second camera underneath that looks down at parcels on the step. It runs on a battery pack you take out to charge, or on your bell wiring, and wired it can ring the chime you already have. A JACK pro in London reads your transformer, tests the 2.4 GHz signal on the doorstep and fits it, for a fixed price you see before you book.

In short

Yes. A JACK pro in London installs the eufy Video Doorbell E340 on its battery pack with no wiring, or on your existing bell wires, where eufy asks for 8–24 V at more than 10 VA with the battery left in and the doorbell can then ring your existing chime. It joins Wi-Fi on 2.4 GHz only and records to 8 GB inside the doorbell, so the pro checks the signal at the door before drilling.

How the Video Doorbell E340 is powered and mounted

Out of the box the E340 is a battery doorbell. A bracket goes on the wall or frame and the doorbell clips onto it; when it needs charging, eufy's detaching pin lifts the doorbell off and the battery pack comes out of the back. That makes it a natural fit for a door with no bell wire at all, or a flat where running cable is not an option. The package camera under the main lens changes how the height is chosen: the top camera should catch faces at the gate, and the lower one should see the doormat, not the inside of the porch.

Wired to an existing bell, the E340 is still a battery doorbell. The bell wire keeps the pack topped up, eufy says the battery must stay installed in wired mode, and eufy's UK blog says wiring it does not add continuous recording. eufy's figure is 8–24 V at more than 10 VA. Many British bell transformers give 8 V at roughly 8 VA, so an E340 that rings but still runs flat on the wires often points to a transformer that is too small.

The transformer can be in three places in a London house: a small module in the consumer unit, a separate small box, or inside a chime that takes 230 V and steps it down itself. That last one matters, because getting at it means opening a mains-fed chime.

What the pro checks first

  • The bell transformer's label, for volts and VA: the E340 wants 8–24 V and more than 10 VA to keep charging
  • Whether your chime is mechanical, with a striker and metal bars, since eufy's UK blog describes the E340 with an existing mechanical chime
  • A 2.4 GHz reading on the doorstep itself, because the E340 cannot fall back to 5 GHz
  • Where the bell wires come through, and whether they reach; eufy packs extension wires and connectors for short ones
  • What each camera sees from the spot: the main view to the gate or pavement, the package camera straight down onto the step

What the pro does on the Video Doorbell E340

  • Battery pack charged in full before the doorbell goes up, which eufy's quick start guide asks for on a first install
  • Bracket set at about 1.2 m, the height eufy gives, with the holes marked through eufy's positioning card
  • The 15° wedge from the box added where the door sits in a deep reveal or the path arrives from one side
  • On a wired install, the circuit feeding the chime or transformer switched off at the consumer unit before any bell wire is touched
  • Chime chosen in the eufy app: the old chime, or a Chime 2, MiniBase Chime or HomeBase instead
  • Side walls kept out of the picture, as eufy warns that infrared bouncing off a nearby wall blurs night vision
  • The detaching pin from the box handed over with a demonstration, since it is how the doorbell comes off its bracket

How the Video Doorbell E340 installation goes

  1. 1Battery pack taken out and charged, then the E340 added to the eufy app on your 2.4 GHz network
  2. 2Live view watched from the step to confirm the signal and both camera angles before anything is drilled
  3. 3Old bell push removed and the bell wires checked; where the transformer label cannot be read, the voltage at the wires is measured
  4. 4Positioning card held at 1.2 m, then holes drilled and plugged for brick or render, or screwed straight into a timber frame
  5. 5Bracket fixed, with the wedge if needed, and the bell wires connected with the power off, using eufy's extension wires where they fall short
  6. 6Battery pack refitted, the doorbell clipped onto the bracket and power restored
  7. 7Chime set in the app, followed by a test press, a walk-up motion test and a recorded clip played back with you

Before you book: what to send

  • A photo of the front door and frame taken from the path, showing where the old bell push sits
  • A close photo of the transformer label, or of the chime if you think the transformer is inside it
  • A photo of the chime with its cover on, and its make if the name is visible
  • Whether you want it on battery or wired, and whether a HomeBase is already in the house
  • You buy the E340 yourself; JACK does not sell devices. A new transformer or a Chime 2 the job needs is agreed and added at cost before you book

What if your bell transformer is too weak to charge the E340?

eufy says the E340 runs off its battery even when wired, so a small transformer mainly means the pack is not kept topped up. There are four ways forward:

  • Leave it on battery: the E340 is a battery doorbell first, so a weak transformer costs you the top-up, not the doorbell
  • Replace the transformer where it is, on the same supply, so the bell wire and the old chime stay in use
  • Feed a new transformer from a fused spur off an existing circuit, where the old one is buried in a mains chime or hard to reach
  • Not through JACK: a transformer wired to its own new way in the consumer unit counts, on JACK's cautious reading, as a new circuit, notifiable under Part P and left to a registered electrician

Getting at a transformer built into a 230 V chime is mains work, so the pro isolates that circuit before the cover comes off, and leaves a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate when the mains side has been changed.

Frequently asked questions

Does the eufy E340 doorbell have an SD card slot?

No. eufy's quick start guide shows no card slot, and its UK blog says no microSD card is required, because the E340 keeps recordings on 8 GB of built-in storage. eufy reckons that holds about 90 days at 30 clips of 20 seconds a day, and a HomeBase 2 or HomeBase S380 can store them instead if you already have one.

Why is my wired eufy E340 not charging?

Often the transformer is too small. eufy asks for 8–24 V and more than 10 VA with the battery in place, and many UK bell transformers manage 8 V at about 8 VA. The pro reads the label, checks the wiring at the chime and either fits a larger transformer on the same supply or leaves the doorbell running on its battery.

Does the E340 record 24/7 if I wire it?

No. eufy's UK blog says wiring the E340 charges its battery rather than switching on continuous recording. eufy's C31 records 24/7 when powered from a 16–24 V, 30 VA transformer with the old chime bypassed, and the S4 Wired records 24/7 to its own storage.

Does the eufy E340 need a subscription?

Not to keep recordings: they go to the doorbell's own 8 GB. eufy sells optional cloud backup plans in the UK, and its UK store notes that some optional or premium features may come with a monthly subscription, so the pro sets it up for local storage unless you ask for cloud.

How much does eufy Video Doorbell E340 installation cost in London?

It is a fixed price for your Video Doorbell E340, worked out by a vetted pro from the model, a photo of where it is going and what power is there now, and shown in the JACK app before you book. Other devices can go on the same booking for one price. If you would rather pay for time, hourly hire for smart home is typically £45–£95 per hour as a guide.
