Hive Thermostat & Thermostat Mini Installation in London

Updated

Both Hive thermostats run on batteries and talk wirelessly to a mains receiver by the boiler, so most of the job is at the receiver end. A vetted JACK pro swaps the receiver in for your old programmer, puts the thermostat where it reads the room properly and pairs it, for a fixed price you see before you book.

In short

Yes. A vetted JACK pro in London installs the Hive Thermostat (with the dial) and the Hive Thermostat Mini, and replaces or moves older Hive thermostats. The thermostat itself is battery powered; the work is fitting its receiver where your old programmer or receiver was, on the existing wiring. Connecting at the boiler itself needs a Gas Safe engineer.

Send a photo of the boiler, your current programmer and thermostat, and the Hive kit you bought. Hive Radiator Valves or a smart doorbell can go on the same booking.

Hive thermostats pros install

Each guide covers how the model is powered and mounted, what the pro does and what to send before booking.

What a Hive thermostat installation involves

Whichever Hive thermostat you have, the visit follows Hive's own installation order:

  • Power to the heating controls isolated and checked dead before anything is opened
  • Old programmer, timer or wireless receiver removed and the Hive receiver wired in its place, on a switched fused spur with a 3 A fuse as Hive specifies
  • An old wired room thermostat taken out of the circuit at the wall or wiring centre, and its cables made safe in an enclosure
  • Boiler tested from the receiver's buttons: it fires on heating (and hot water, on a cylinder system) and stops again
  • Thermostat fixed to an inside wall about 1.5 m from the floor, or set on Hive's stand, then paired to the receiver and hub
  • Schedule, boost and frost protection set up in the Hive app with you

Where the thermostat goes matters as much as the wiring

Hive's installation guide is specific about placement, because a thermostat in the wrong spot keeps the heating on or off at the wrong times:

  • On an inside wall, about 1.5 m from the floor, away from radiators, cookers and direct sunlight
  • Not in a room whose radiator has a thermostatic radiator valve: Hive says the two together can leave the heating permanently on
  • Within about 10 metres of the receiver and hub, and at least a metre from TVs or speakers
  • On a single-gang back box or a plain wall fixing, or on Hive's table stand if you would rather not drill

How Hive installation is priced

A vetted pro prices your job from photos of the boiler, your existing controls and the Hive kit, and the JACK app shows you that fixed price before you book.

Where the wiring already is matters more than the device. A receiver that goes where an old programmer was, on the same wiring, is the simplest job. Hot water on a cylinder, an old wired thermostat to take out of the circuit, a receiver that has to move, or several zones each add time. A photo of the boiler, the old controls and anything labelled near the hot water cylinder lets the pro price what is really there.

Several devices go on one booking for one price: the thermostat, the hub, and Hive Radiator Valves for each room. Other jobs, such as a smart doorbell, can go on the same visit. Where parking has to be paid for, it is added at cost and agreed before you book.

Prefer to pay for the pro's time? Hourly hire works too: as a guide, smart home installation is typically £45–£95 per hour.

How it works

Step 1

Share your boiler and controls

Add photos of the boiler (including the label with its make and model), your current programmer or thermostat, and the Hive kit you have. Say whether you have a hot water cylinder and where your broadband router is.

Step 2

See the price, pick a slot

A vetted pro prices the job from what you sent and says if any part needs a Gas Safe engineer instead. Book once you are happy with the price; evenings and weekends are available when pros have them.

Step 3

Fitted, tested, handed over

Power isolated, old controls removed and made safe, receiver wired and tested, thermostat and hub paired, and the schedule set up in the Hive app with you. You follow it all in the JACK app.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Hive thermostat installation cost in London?

It is a fixed price for your job, worked out by a vetted pro from photos of the boiler, your existing controls and the Hive kit, and shown in the JACK app before you book. If you would rather pay for time, hourly hire for smart home installation is typically £45–£95 per hour as a guide.

Which Hive thermostat should I buy?

Both work with the same receivers and boilers. The Hive Thermostat has a dial and takes AA batteries; the Mini has touch controls and no dial, takes AAA batteries and needs the Hive Hub and app for schedules. Choose the one you prefer to use day to day; the installation is the same.

Can you replace my wired room thermostat with Hive?

Yes. Hive's thermostat is wireless, so the old wired one is taken out of the circuit at the wall or the wiring centre and its cables made safe. If the only place to disconnect it is inside the boiler, that part needs a Gas Safe engineer, and the pro will say so from your photos.
